Loved the packaging and prompt delivery but very disappointed in the Topside of beef joint that I roasted last Sunday. Maybe I chose the wrong cut to roast, but this turned out to be incredibly tough to eat and not good at all. The other goods ordered were great: The beef mince, pork mince, Calabrian sausages, and Italian sausages. Maybe you could suggest a better cut of beef for roasting? Many thanks Sara Stocks

Hi Sara, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. It's challenging to comment as you don't mention how you cooked the joint, however one thing worth noting is that topside is a leaner cut than some roasting joints and benefits hugely from being cooked medium rare. you're looking for a final internal temperature of 53-55°C - you'll need to remove from the oven at around 49°C as the joint will rise in temperature during resting. I have written a guide on how to cook a topside of beef you can find here; https://journal.swaledale.co.uk/how-to-guides/how-to-cook-a-topside-of-beef/ The slow roasting technique is particularly effective, if you have the time and the inclination. Other joints you may enjoy, that are naturally more tender and have a higher fat content are Rolled Sirloin, Ribeye of Beef Roast (both delicious cooked to the temperature mentioned for topside) - Rolled Beef Brisket would be a great option if you enjoy a joint that is slow roasted and falling apart, links here for you; https://swaledale.co.uk/products/sirloin-roast-rolled https://swaledale.co.uk/products/ribeye-roast https://swaledale.co.uk/products/rolled-brisket I hope this helps. I usually really like the meat provided by Swaledale and in this latest order that is still mostly true. The bacon however is very disappointing. It looks like water has been added (judging by the white bubbles and discharge while cooking) and the flavour is poor. Far below the bacon from Farmison/Gridiron/Pipers etc.

I ordered a free range chicken, a rolled leg of lamb, streaky bacon, sausages and a cockerel for Christmas. The chicken, lamb, bacon and sausages were all delicious. However, the cockerel was uninspiring. I don’t think vacuum packing was helpful as the bird was flabby and didn’t seem very fresh. I have had cockerel before and was very impressed with it but this time it was a disappointment.

Ordering was easy and the produce reasonably priced for the product being offered.

Everything seems good although I opened the chicken wings yesterday for gravy and they smelt disgusting. I just hope the pork loin and everything else is okay as I have frozen it for Xmas. Bit disappointed really

Hi Julie, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We’ve emailed you separately regarding this, however I wanted to confirm that I have looked at the batch codes of your order and can confirm your wings were prepared from fresh stock. I’m certain that the vacuum seal will have been punctured, allowing air in to the bag and the product to spoil prematurely. This is unfortunate, however we would always recommend that in this circumstance a product should be removed from the bag and used promptly or repacked and frozen. I’m very confident your other items will be in perfect condition. As a gesture of goodwill we have refunded you. I hope you enjoy the rest of the order and have a great Christmas. Best regards, Jorge

The quality of two ribeye steaks were not up to the usual standard.

Whilst the website looks amazing and the produce too, I will write an honest review of my purchase. I ordered an 800grm Sirloin Beef Roast, 1.4kg piece of Pork Shoulder and 500gram packet of beef mince. The packaging and service was excellent the meat came on time with regular updates via DPD. It arrived nicely packaged with the addition of ice packs, it was cold and vacpacked. The quality of the meat for me wasnt particular great. The Sirloin roast lacked flavour and i found this tough. I found the pork same, flavourless and despite cooking slow for almost 4 hours, it wasnt shredding the same way as pork i have purchased from local farms. It might be bcause of where the meat is produced the flavours are not the same as other farms south. I am sure that the flavour and quality for everyone must be to their taste, but it wasnt for me. It is a shame because the website, delivery and service have been superb. I am yet to try the beef mince.

Delivery was great and super quick but was disappointed by the packaging on two of the products and the sizing of another one of the products. I bought the beef and pork bones for my dog, thinking that these would be larger bone pieces from the photos but they were more like small bite sized pieces. Marrow bones were excellent and were a great alternative for my dog. Offal was also greatly enjoyed by my dog. Quality of all the products I top notch, however I was disappointed by the meat packaging on the livers as they were dripping blood from the corner of the packaging when I removed them from the box. Just looked like the packaging seal wasn't stuck together in some places. I had to use them up pretty quickly because the packaging was open. Don't think I will try this again for my dog needs but would if I needed to purchase a big slab of great quality meat for Christmas or another special occasion.

Meat appears to be excellent. However delivery on my recent order was terrible,The parcel was left at a proprty about a quart of a mile away clearly signed Orchard ottage where the owner was on holiday. Luckily I recognised the location from the photo supplied.I happened to be viewing another E mail soon after the delivery, which was fortuittous in the present heat.

My order was mostly fine, except that they did not have ox kidney (so I was refunded for it) and then after delivery, I saw that 0.5 kg of a leg of lamb was missing (0.88 kg actual weight, 1.4 kg was ordered). I was refunded for half of that leg. Overall, it was acceptable as nothing else was incorrect, but it was a bother. Thankfully, their customer service was good.

After having such delicious joints of meat at Easter, decided to order BBQ items, unfortunately, the mutton chops were extremely tough, the kofta was too dense and the mutton burger a little bland. I would very much recommend the joints but not the BBQ items.

Order two chicken at £19.00 each One looked like corn fed deep yellow colour quite an old bird with knuckles showing age The other was pale It had been crushed and was out of shape Tasteless. An embarrassment because they where cooked together to feed 8 We have not order sausage from you again. The skins are so tough I can’t see us ordering from Swaledale again. Unless your quality standards go back to how they used to be Reassurance is needed Your so disappointed Patricia Ecuyer South Ferriby Hall

Quality of meat is good but when you are paying these prices you'd expect the orders to be done right and double checked. Second time that there is a wrong item in the order. First time they sent me the right one. However, I do not want to be having to contact them every time I make an order if this makes sense.

Reliable high quality meat. Excellent choice. Only thing that lets it down is over the course of numerous orders, I’ve had two meat packets which were not sealed properly and had leaked.

Smoked pork cheek was disappointing, over smoked and only enough meat for one person, I am aware it is mostly fat, but this was poor. The burgers were goody !

When it comes to the preparation and cooking of the salt beef instead of waxing lyrical about Val Warner try informing the customer of cooking times, it does help to know how long to cook things for and how to prepare them. The salt beef should have been soaked in water before cooking, as I found out afterwards.
