Overall not bad, not quite the class of meat I’m looking for.

Delivery was as described and secure, which was appreciated. Unfortunately we found the quality and taste of both products we purchased inferior quality to other butchers and online butchers we have used in the past for the same joints, which was a shame.

Great products and customer service, badly let down by DPD's appalling delivery service: how parcels have managed to avoid being stolen, from the random, roadside locations at which they are dumped by DPD drivers, continues to amaze me. If only you'd use a dependable courier, such as UPS or FedEx, for deliveries!

Normally I would always give a 5 star review of the products I have received. However on this occasion I can only give 3 for the following reasons: 1. I'd ordered the Porchetta and a venison loin. I was informed on the day before delivery that the venison loin was unavailable. I think this is a little late to inform me as I did not then have the opportunity to source it from somewhere else in time for my dinner party. 2. The Porchetta was actually very, very fatty this time and all the family commented on it. I have had this joint before and it was delicious so hopefully this was just a one off.

I've yet to try the goods as they only arrived yesterday, dumped in the pouring rain on my doorstep and left till I found the parcel by accident as no one bothered to ring the door bell. Needless to say the box was disintegrated.

All sausages excellent, some beef is rather tough.

If I had know beforehand that the beef liver was not available I would have cancelled my order

This order didn’t seem as good as previous. Bacon had an odd taste and the sirloin wasn’t as flavourful. The shin and sausages were good though.

Always been good but the ham we bought for Xmas was disappointing. Still covered in hairs that should be removed as part of the butchery

The beef, pork and lamb I ordered were delicous but the beef and lamb had a significantly larger portion of fat left on the meat than I'm use to. Hope this was a one off because they were recommended to me by a friend and I'd like to order from them again.

Hi there, Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. It’s great to hear that you’ve enjoyed the produce you’ve tried so far. We’re passionate about the native breeds we supply and their longevity - one of the features of these breeds is their fat content, which is more generous than modern commercial breeds. In our experience a smaller, fatter carcass gives rise to unsurpassed flavour and quality. We do, however have a range of options at any given time - should you prefer a leaner example then please just send us a brief email with your order number to hello@swaledale.co.uk and we would be very happy to accommodate your request. Best regards, Jorge

The meat is great and came well packed. The bone marrow came cut lengthwise however, and not how it is advertised. This made it impossible to use the way I intended.

The meat was superb. I knocked the stars off because I tried calling several times in the week before including leaving a message and it was not returned despite your answer phone message saying that calls would be returned. I had wanted to add something to the order and could not find a way to do it on line so I wanted to talk to someone

Some cuts of meats are good some others not. The last beef liver I ordered was very smell and greenish. Also the mince beef has a weird smell.

Everything is of a high quality but the item that prompted me to order was subsequently not available and I was told of this too late to cancel the order: rather, I was just told of the refund without given a choice. The refunded item was subsequently advertised as available but I didn't want to put together another £70 order. It was a shame, as the salt beef I was looking forward to is available in very few alternative outlets,

Loved the packaging and prompt delivery but very disappointed in the Topside of beef joint that I roasted last Sunday. Maybe I chose the wrong cut to roast, but this turned out to be incredibly tough to eat and not good at all. The other goods ordered were great: The beef mince, pork mince, Calabrian sausages, and Italian sausages. Maybe you could suggest a better cut of beef for roasting? Many thanks Sara Stocks

Hi Sara, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. It's challenging to comment as you don't mention how you cooked the joint, however one thing worth noting is that topside is a leaner cut than some roasting joints and benefits hugely from being cooked medium rare. you're looking for a final internal temperature of 53-55°C - you'll need to remove from the oven at around 49°C as the joint will rise in temperature during resting. I have written a guide on how to cook a topside of beef you can find here; https://journal.swaledale.co.uk/how-to-guides/how-to-cook-a-topside-of-beef/ The slow roasting technique is particularly effective, if you have the time and the inclination. Other joints you may enjoy, that are naturally more tender and have a higher fat content are Rolled Sirloin, Ribeye of Beef Roast (both delicious cooked to the temperature mentioned for topside) - Rolled Beef Brisket would be a great option if you enjoy a joint that is slow roasted and falling apart, links here for you; https://swaledale.co.uk/products/sirloin-roast-rolled https://swaledale.co.uk/products/ribeye-roast https://swaledale.co.uk/products/rolled-brisket I hope this helps. I usually really like the meat provided by Swaledale and in this latest order that is still mostly true. The bacon however is very disappointing. It looks like water has been added (judging by the white bubbles and discharge while cooking) and the flavour is poor. Far below the bacon from Farmison/Gridiron/Pipers etc.

I ordered a free range chicken, a rolled leg of lamb, streaky bacon, sausages and a cockerel for Christmas. The chicken, lamb, bacon and sausages were all delicious. However, the cockerel was uninspiring. I don’t think vacuum packing was helpful as the bird was flabby and didn’t seem very fresh. I have had cockerel before and was very impressed with it but this time it was a disappointment.
