“I learned new pedagogies from my TEFL course and feel really happy I completed it. But I faced some issues with the course design. First: the way the course is organized is very confusing. The grammar module is listed first. It’s the most boring and because I thought the course had to be studied in the order it was set up, I spent months on it. Only when I moved to methodology did I realize that was really the most important module. Methodology was interesting and the classroom videos were useful. But when you download the course, the transcript of the videos don’t download. So you have to cut and paste the individual transcripts or download individual videos. This is a huge headache when it comes time to doing the assignments and you have to keep searching through the course to re-watch the right videos, instead of just reading the transcript. The other 3 modules are not particularly useful … telephone teaching should be called online teaching :), for one thing. The assignments were great and made me think hard. I wish there had been observation of real classes. But overall the course left me ready to start out in the TEFL world.”

“The course itself was very comprehensive with good examples and demonstrations. I especially like the tutor Joe from the first unit about Grammar. However, I did experience a number of problems. The assessments caused me several issues. Firstly, the examples chosen for questions were often not taken from explicit teaching in the course which made it hard to find appropriate answers. Secondly, I had problems with the assessor. Often I felt he marked me unfairly based on my responses, in the sense that he would fail for me when my answers were technically correct. There was also one occasion where he failed me, and it was only when I questioned why that he responded to say that my answer was in fact correct after all, despite me not having amended anything. I also felt that the course focused too much on teaching methodologies in a general sense, rather than being specific to the teaching of English. The main part of the course was the second unit which took up a lot of my time and which I felt was mostly unnecessary for me as I already have teaching experience and knowledge. I completed the course to learn more about teaching English as a foreign language, not just about how to teach in general.”

“I loved the overall experience and materials, but my tutor was awful! She would send back an assignment with cryptic feedback and sometimes without even reading it because the changes asked where made! She was almost never available via email or reply very late, and never provided work for not helpful comments. Horrible.”

“The class was okay, but the quizzes and the tests were very vague. The instructions are not easy to understand.”

“The overall course is well organized and some of the techniques seemed really helpful for teaching English in a newer and much easier way than traditional grammar courses. However, I think there may be a few issues with your some of the contents e.g. lesson videos, scripts and also assignment questions and answer requirements. Sometimes students’ voice or accent is not clear and also there is text missing in the scripts. There are assignment questions which are not clear on what they are asking for (e.g. In US Video Observation Course, unit 4 assignment, you are asking for specific information activity based on 10 reading comprehension questions but neither it is specifically mentioned in assignment question nor all of those questions students had in their hands were shown properly in the video or script). Moreover, I feel that the requirements of word limit are quite challenging for the type of answers expected. So, in my opinion, perhaps these things need to be updated for a better outcome from students. Lastly, this course may not be helpful for seeking jobs overseas, especially for those whose native language is not English (almost 95% companies offering jobs impose that strict criteria) therefore, this point could be highlighted in course description.”

“I was a little disappointed that feedback from the written assignments was limited to 2/3 sentences and the rest of the feedback had been copied and pasted - lots of which wasn’t relevant to me. Also I found the video on VYL games, in which the teacher runs out of ideas and so uses his mobile phone to search for more, incredibly unprofessional. What kind of example is this setting to new teachers? The rest of the course was interesting and easy to navigate.”

“I would have greatly appreciated to have everything I did wrong marked. It made the pass/fail assignments difficult to understand what I needed to fix. I was only fixing things that were marked wrong and every time I resubmitted the assignments a new error was revealed. It felt like a waste. Just some thoughts.”

“Learned a few things I didn’t know. Interesting approach to the subject material. I did find it a little dated. Time to incorporate new methods of teachin/learning. A large part of functional learning from Western students anyway is from YouTube as an example.”

“I felt that the videos explaining each methodology could be more in depth. A lot of the time I would take into account the feedback on my written assignment and then I would submit it again with different feedback. If the feedback is given all together it would have been easier to complete the assignments. One feedback said I was over the world limit and that was it, I submitted it with a reduction in the words and then I had a whole new list of things I had to complete with new feedback. That was a bit confusing. It would be nice if you could hold face to face sessions with instructors to get to know them and at least have them on email if you have any questions.”

“Helpful in reviewing some information and gaining more engagement strategies. But there were errors in the grammar course (at least using US English grammar) as well as my tutor was not helpful and almost never answered my questions directly. Instead repeating the same information over and over as I asked clarifying questions.”

“I didn´t pass my second assignment because I didn´t give enough detail on "what I would actually teach", i.e specific phrases, listing expressions, referencing which texts I would use as examples, actual references and so on. But this was not mentioned in the Quiz overview. If this had been mentioned, then of course I would have known that I should specficy such things. Now I have to do the assignment again because I failed due to omitting these details. PLEASE BE MORE SPECIFIC when setting assignments.”

“I felt the grammar course was the most thorough and explained the concepts well. However, oftentimes the grammar of the writing in the course itself was wrong or sloppy. There were misspellings, mispunctuation, etc. I also did not feel like the practice/graded quizzes tested my knowledge. A lot of the questions were easily solved just by looking at the phrasing or verbage used within them. At the end of the quizzes, there was no explanation as to which answer was correct and why. Also, if one of the quiz questions was marked as incorrect, the question would be completely different when going back for the second or third attempt. So there was always the doubt of "what was the answer to that original question?" The post-unit assignments actually got me thinking and made me go back to important parts of the unit to review. Perhaps there could be more interactive ways to learn throughout the course. If the live classroom videos had quiz questions throughout, this could be a good way to engage the viewer.”

“Generally i thought the assignments were good, the quizzes were a bit too easy, you dont really have to go through all of the theory in order to pass them, which is good on one hand because you finish more fast, but if you are looking to actually proof the knowledge learned, maybe the questions have to be a bit more challenging. I thought the course would be more interactive, so maybe with skype or any video call, so that the teacher can give more specific feedback and also because writing a lesson plan and holding a lesson with presence and in live are two very different things. Overall it gave me a good general base for starting to teach online and for volonteering in classes abroad.”
