It was ok. The written assignments were very poorly explained, and the grading was overly subjective, especially given the poorly defined parameters. If you're going to have highly subjective grading, you need very highly defined expectations, otherwise, it's a really annoying slog of eye-rolling at the grader responses and saying "Well, if that's what you wanted, why didn't you say that?" and "That's your personal opinion!"

Sometimes the information is confusing and could be given examples in a variety of ways and more activities to reinforce learning. The tutors are always available which is great.

The lessons and quiz were easy, but the lessons to write were too much difficult. No examples or things that prepare for these.

Course materials are usually helpful but delivery is inconsistent and feels cobbled together. The tutor support is prompt but there should be the opportunity to communicate with tutor on phone particularly at the beginning. I know the org needs to make money so supply of direct support would need to be rationed but I feel this could be achieved by a token system duty tutor Roster.

I think the overall content is good, with a strong focus on practical situations and applicable knowledge. There are several videos that I think ought to be reviewed, for instance the video on tutoring, sample lesson. The teacher in the video shows little inclination to adapt her tl to the students need. The student states that what she needs is practice speaking, instead the focus of the lesson is on some insultingly basic vocabulary. I also felt that the scope of allowed solutions to the written assignments was too narrow, and that all creativity in writing lesson plans was punished until I settled for writing extremely bland texts.

I found the teaching methodology, grammar modules and video observation courses useful but the other two modules included in the package I purchased seemed to be 'filler' courses with no real substance. (Telephone Teaching and Teaching Large Classes) The testing in TEFL.org is geared to the teacher -- for ease of marking and in my opinion, it should be designed for the student. Why would the assignments in the most important courses have a word count limit of 100 - 150 and the assignments in the teaching large classes and telephone classes have a 600 word count? It is important for students to acquire the basic teaching skills initially before proceeding to the other courses. If a student had to develop a detailed lesson plan for either the teaching methodology or grammar course, rather than worry about a word count, it would be more helpful to future lesson planning. The bulk of the testing is in a true/false format. Although it is easier for a teacher to mark (and I find completing written assignments overly stressful), I have never felt that this type of testing really shows a student's deeper understanding of the subject matter. I think that maybe you could offer a package to students with a couple of elective courses they might choose to make up the bundle. I will NEVER teach a large class because I prefer one-on-one tutoring so I found the Teaching Large Classes to be a chore to complete. (I would find a course on how to set up a home-based TEFL business useful.) Calling the course I completed 'Telephone Teaching' is outdated and the course name ought to be changed. Watching certified teachers conduct lessons was very helpful -- keep the videos in the course. Your podcasts and blogs are great -- hearing real stories from real people is invaluable. Thank you for the opportunity to share my experience of studying with TEFL.org.

Hi Heather, Thank you for posting a review and we’re sorry to hear that your experience was not of the quality you expected. Our courses do certainly follow a strict structure which ensures that we continue to meet the high standards of our accreditors. We do still find many people around the world don't have easy access to the internet or still use Skype etc. We therefore try to make sure that our courses cover this in Telephone Teaching, so that teachers have the tools to provide English lessons to everyone, no matter where they are in the world. Many teachers also go on to teach in large classes, so the skills learned in these units can be invaluable. Following our accreditation criteria, we also ensure that the assignments given meet these standards. Our shorter units only have one assignment each, whereas the longer Methodology unit requires 5 assignments ranging from 100 to 600 words. There are also quizzes throughout our courses but these are used as a revision tool. We also offer shorter and advanced courses separately, such as a stand-alone Video Observation Course or Grammar Course for example. Please feel free to reach out to info@tefl.org with any further comments or suggestions you wish to share. In the meantime, I will pass along your feedback to our team as we always aim to improve our courses further. Best, The TEFL Org Team

Like I told Joanna there is no point in reviewing my experience as it was doomed from the start. There is no point in getting a TEFL certificate from the look of things. Someone on the recruiter list for vacancies was kind enough to point this out to me as I am not from an approved native speaking country. The alternative approved native English level has to gotten through IELTS or through a degree from one of the 7 recognised countries. Its a real pain. ¡Que mierda total!

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations. We certainly train thousands of students a year from all over the world, who go on to live and work abroad successfully with their TEFL.Org qualification. If you are not set on teaching in a specific country that requires native English speakers, then you still have plenty of options. We also have a great blog post that can help further with this: https://www.tefl.org/blog/can-non-native-english-speakers-do-tefl/. Please feel free to reach out to info@tefl.org with any further comments or concerns you wish to share.

An acceptable way to get your 120-hr TEFL certification. However, I did not need to spend so much time reviewing english grammer, as I am a native speaker. More of the course should be about learning teaching skills.

Thank you for your review, Mark! We’re sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations. We normally receive great feedback regarding our Grammar section from native English speakers. As this can be a great refresher course, and only equates to 30-hours of the 120-hour course. It is also a requirement for us to maintain our high standard of accreditation. Thanks again for your feedback and all the best with your TEFL career!

Thank you for your feedback on The TEFL Org! We’re sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations. It was an uncommon instance for us as many of our students value the support they receive from our tutors. There is certainly never any need to 'guess' what to do as every student is assigned their own tutor whom they can contact at any time with any questions. Please feel free to reach out to info@tefl.org with any further comments or suggestions you wish to share.

Concepts like “discovering meaning”, for example, are so difficult to teach and communicate to begin with that to have to write a lesson plan illustrating these points without the benefit of verbal words, or actual body language seems near impossible from the outset. To then have to spend a great effort editing down to an absurdly small (and seemingly arbitrary) word count number for lesson plan assignments becomes salt on a wound… This leads me to my second observation: something as simple as a 5-minute conversation with the course tutor (by zoom, phone etc), perhaps as part of a scheduled ‘office hours’ time block, could easily solve this problem. No doubt your business model and price point lead you to keep tutor interaction time to an absolute minimum, but I think I would look to one of the more expensive courses out there if I had to do this over again. Third issue: very little was said about proficiency levels, level testing etc. Even just a page or module with a list of links to specific websites that detail this info would have been very helpful. Teaching students that are specifically trying to prepare for the TOEFL for example seems like an unavoidable part of TEFL teaching and I don't feel I learned much of anything about the subject...

I did not learn much from the program, but I have prior classroom experience. I wish there were other options, more practice producing, and less work on intuitive/obvious multiple choice questions and videos. Maybe different types of assessments would be more beneficial, but it would require an internal restructuring of tutor grading, among other alterations. But, maybe the method is fine and it’s me who got annoyed/bored and just wanted something different than the chapter final ‘projects’ that were easier and more reductive than what I was doing at my job.

Overall the course was easy to follow and straight forward. I was not really pleased with the tutor support I received. There was one assignment that I needed clarity on when it came to my feedback and I felt like I didn't get it at all. I was given the same feedback each time which I clearly didn't understand. In the end I had to ask a friend to help me understand who had taken the course a couple of months back.

I like the method, the structure and the content of the course. The videos showing real classes were very helpful. I think the method is however pushed a bit too religiously in the tutors’ feedback and felt a bit like a straight jacket. Although I believe having a method and a structure is extremely important, there is a risk of suffocating the creativity and dynamics of the teaching so I suggest to aim for more balance.

The program was easy enough to follow however the Methodology course was very confusing. I feel that the course was not explained well and the answers to the test questions were not available within the text, as asked. Throughout the course, it seemed that examples were vague and meant to confuse, therefore causing repeated reviews and attempts at the testing. It was as if they did not want you to succeed. I found grammar errors and miss spelled words throughout the course and in the tests. Granted some of these are due to American English vs UK English. I feel that the course went to extremes when it came to grammar structure. I am an American with a BA degree in Education, and a Master's in Business and there were things in this course that I had never seen. Not that it was incorrect but it was to the extreme when teaching English.

Hi Sue, Thanks for sharing your review with us. There are certainly many differences between American English and British English. We therefore provide both versions for our 120-hour course depending on the students requirements. Our courses are designed by TEFL teachers who have decades of experience, so they know what is needed to teach around the world and/or online to EFL students. Although we know qualified teachers have no issues completing the course, ESL does have certain nuances, that you may not necessarily have covered in your other teaching/studying. Your feedback is very much appreciated as this helps us to improve our courses further. We wish you the very best of luck in your TEFL journey!

TEFL is a great course but one that somewhat feels hollow. The examples are vague and the demonstration videos aren't entirely helpful. The descriptions also require more depth. When one assignments feel like it's worth accomplishing the other two feel like a filler assignment that holds no real value. A great course if you're a beginner beginner. But if you came from a background of the more modern-day schooling this course is no use to you. It's the same "discover this" when all the students really want is for you to tell them what "Past Continuous" is.

I am pleased to have achieved the 120hr course. I started with energy and enthusiasm. I then found the course to be video overload. Particularly the lessons, perhaps this is because I am a trained primary teacher. The assessments were reviewed quickly and tutor contact and response was almost immediate. Some of the quizzes were very basic. I did feel like the course was very drawn out but I did it. Thank you and sorry to not be positive.

Hi Claire, Thank you for your review. We are sorry that your experience at TEFL Org didn’t match your expectations. Normally we receive excellent reviews from new and experienced teachers, so I will certainly pass along your feedback to our team who will always aim to improve our courses further. For our quizzes, these are there as an aid to refresh what was learned in each module, so these are not assessed in the same way as the assignments. The tutors do have to mark and provide feedback within 48-hours as well, and these markings also have to meet high accreditation standards, so you can be sure these were assessed correctly. Thanks again for your feedback, and we wish you the very best of luck in your TEFL journey!
