We had no problems with the quality of the products supplied - all very good and of exceptional quality - but were disappointed with the amount of plastic wrapping. We do understand that use of plastic is unavoidable for transport but we noticed that for multiple items (which were singularly wrapped) were further wrapped in additional (and unnecessary) plastic wrappings - plastic that cannot be recycled. We were somewhat taken aback given that Pipers Farms makes a strong pitch for recycling wool pouches, ice packs and green branded plastic bags but not the clear plastic.

Hi John, If we had it our way, we'd do away with packaging altogether, but to get our food to you in perfect condition we need to protect it. We have spent a lot of time, over many cups of tea, working out the best way to send out our lovely products to you. We have considered and tested many options to find the best solution that keeps your food at the perfect temperature, reduces your food waste, is easy and convenient to store and importantly doesn't harm our beautiful environment. Durable, flexible, recyclable, with a lower carbon footprint than paper and infinite uses when disposed of responsibly, in many ways, plastics are brilliant. It’s no wonder that globally we have become increasingly reliant on them. Unfortunately, carbon footprint isn’t the only environmental issue to be considered when it comes to plastic. Large amounts of plastic are ending up in our oceans and are not being widely recycled as part of a circular economy. We’ve removed as much packaging as possible, you won’t find any plastic lurking in our boxes where it isn’t absolutely necessary. For any plastic we use we ensure that we use the lowest grade plastic possible in order to reduce our usage. Unfortunately, we can’t do without plastic-like material completely; without it, your food would not be able to be stored in the freezer leading to an increased rate of it going ‘off’ and being wasted, resulting in massive food waste. As we only work with whole carcass butchery, there is minimal plastic used at the beginning of our supply chain. Our carcasses are delivered from the abattoir to our butchery completely plastic free, it is only when we cut and wrap our meat do we add plastic to our products in order to meet food safety protocols and get the food to you safely. It is important to consider this and make the distinction, as in many other retail environments, such as butcher's shops and supermarkets, meat is repackaged multiple times during the long supply chain process, which means far greater amounts of plastic are used. It may be finally wrapped in paper by the butcher over the counter of a supermarket or in a butcher's shop, however that does not guarantee a reduced plastic supply chain and often masks the true story of how that product has arrived from farm to table. At the moment, recyclable plastic is the most sustainable material to use for many of our products. We’re constantly researching and testing new packaging options that will help achieve our mission. Best Wishes Liz

I purchased a number of items, whilst they were of good quality, the cheese sausages lacked in flavour. The belly pork was extremely small, I’ve yet to try the rest

Hi Helen, Thank you for taking time to leave your review of your first order with Pipers Farm. I am sorry that you found that sausages lacked flavor and the Pork belly was too small for you. I will do my best to help. Looking at your order, I can see that you ordered a 500g pork belly? the Pork belly is also available to buy as 1kg and 1.5kg if you would prefer a larger cut. I usually suggest 500g for two people. The Cheddar & Red Onion Marmalade Sausages are one of our most highly rated sausages, they are usually one of our more flavoured sausages and I am sorry that you were disappointed. I suggest our Cumberland sausages as a sausage packed with flavour of wonderful herbs coupled with our fab Saddleback pork! I hope that you enjoy the cumberland sausages and the rest of your order once you have had time to try. Thank you once again and please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can help further? hello@pipersfarm.com Liz
