“Permaseal damp proof paint. Liquid membrane for water and vapour proofing applications. Project - renovation of a 180yr old property. My ground floor W/C needed updating so stripped back to render walls, with the intention to board over with Trepanels however the oldest 9” external wall being very rough damp area required a damp protection, and i found a product to be an ideal solution and gave the wall a clean finish from where to install the trepanels and w/c fittings. Many professionals within the industry believe that walls of this age that are built with lime mortar should be repaired externally with lime mortar to allow the wall to breath, however this still allows water penetration to the building. It is my belief that we could come up with a better way to protect our homes such as a product i have come across that when coated on the external of a wall which is a clear transparent coating and will not allow water into the brickwork but at the same time will allow the wall to breath, so when applied in the summer when the wall are dry will protect the external walls, therefore with the Permagard applied internally i believe we can provide the longevity of buildings in the future. Just a note to say i spent 15 yrs as a bricklayer then construction site manager for 20yrs and then site project manger and client project manager for 20 yrs until retirement. During which gaining CIOB qualifications in these areas so i did learn a bit along the way. Hope this helps. Mark”

“A little goes a long way! I used two coats exactly as prescribed over some pretty hostile graffiti. I’ll be honest, I was expecting to have to use several coats but two coats and then the final coloured (santex) coat was all that was needed. Check the pictures.”

“Hi there Steve, thanks for all the advice that Chris and your other experts gave me. I found that my 'damp' problem (rotting skirting and flaking paint work in two specific areas in the centre of the house) was not due to rising damp but to damp absorbed into the relatively new (3 years) plaster I had had applied to the walls in this area of the house. The new plaster was applied right down to the floor boards and it seems that it absorbed moisture from the atmosphere and from the walls due partially to the salts in the walls and partially to lack of circulation of air under the floorboards in this area of the house. So as well as installing three floor vents, and cutting back the new plaster about three inches from the floor boards behind the (replaced) skirting, I applied several coats of Permagard to the plaster after having stripped the paint from the walls in the damp areas. I am not sure to what extent the permagard has contributed to the solution, there has been hardly any sign of salt deposites on the surface of the plasterwork but I have assumed that the permagard has played a part though the provision for greater air circulation under and behind the skirting seems to have been key also. The proof long term will be that the rotting of the skirting and spoiling of the paint work does not return. Thanks again for all the advice your experts have given me.
