At renewal time, having compared prices with other breakdown providers, I found GEM was no longer the cheapest provider for the level of cover I required. I rang GEM, the customer advisor was friendly and offered a free month's cover, which I accepted and renewed my cover for another year.

My initial contact with GEM to become a member was handled very efficiently and it was made very clear what my membership would cover. Hopefully any breakdown assistance I will require will be handled as efficiently.

I have been a member for many years now, with only having to use the service once. On that occasion (approximately 15 years ago) I could not fault the system. Hopefully now ,things will have got a great deal better with a call center available 24 hrs. Sincerely Robin Smith.

We have been members for many years and have never had to use your services,so it makes it very difficult to rate response time or repairs at roadside.What I would say is why do you not reward long term members with a renewal discount as you do for brand new customers.I would like a response to this comment because next year we may leave and find some other company that is cheaper with a similar service.edwards_michael3@sky.com or 01634681010,regards Michael Edwards.

GEM operates in a fiercely competitive market place and all of our rivals offer discounts to encourage motorists to join them. Most often the rates charged are impossible to sustain in the long term . We have , somewhat reluctantly, been forced to follow this trend in order to maintain our share of the market and to ensure we continue to have sufficient customers to be able to offer highly competitive rates to all our members on an on-going basis. Unlike our competitors GEM is an independent not for profit organisation that has no external share holders to satisfy but likewise we have to operate within our own means while retaining our price levels at the lowest possible rates. Can only comment on good price and good admin to date although I have fortunately not had to call on their main function of breakdown recovery

GEM USE LOCAL GARAGES. ON ONE OCCASION, THIS WAS AN ADVANTAGE, AS THE LORRY ARRIVED SWIFTLY AND DEALT WITH THE MATTER. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, THIS WAS A DISADANTAGE AS THE FIRM USED WAS BUSY AND IT TOOK A LONG TIME FOR THEM TO ARRIVE. GEM ARE A DECENT FIRM, AND OFFERED FINANCIAL COMPENSATION WHEN THE SERVICE WAS POORER THAN EXPECTED.

Signing up was easy, the cover good, and the cost reasonable. Can't say more than that until I've had occasion to use it, which hopefully won't happen.

Joining was very easy & the rates are very reasonable. I have now cancelled with the AA, they basically told me I was paying more for them because of the name. Actually I'm wanting to spend my money on good service and value, not what the companies called. Time will probably tell on service though I hope I never have to call.

I have always found the GEM service to be excellent but it bugs the hell out of me that every year you increase my premium to that which is being offered to new customers.

If the breakdown & recovery process is as good as the initial experience of using the web site it should be a good service, as with all insurance you only really find out if it is any good when you need it. Hopefully it will be very good.

It was very good: easy to sign up online and the cover looks quite price competitive. I won't really know whether Gem are any good until I need to call them out, though.

The purchasing process was very good, but not excellent because I resent having to print out my own documents to save to issuing company the print and postage costs. I would rather pay £1 extra and have them delivered. As a roadside assistance provider the real customer experience is only shown if I have a need to call them out, so I can't comment on that yet!
