About Friars.co.uk:

It all started back in 1927 when William Long had the fabulous idea of opening a luxury chocolate shop in the picturesque town of Keswick, in the heart of the Lake District. He probably never dreamed it would still be in the same family nearly 100 years later.

In those early days the shop only opened during the summer months and it is believed William chose to winter in the Madeira sunshine. As you would expect the business has evolved in many ways since then, however certain principles remain since those early days.

Innovation – We were the first to make a prosecco truffle and then shortly after we followed with our fabulous gin truffle. More recently; although Easter eggs are synonymous with Easter, we decided to move away from the main stream and invented our famous hot cross bun truffle.

But all this only scratches the surface; we are also one of the first chocolate makers to start transitioning to 100% biodegrade packagingM as well as pioneering vegan milk and white chocolate...among other things.

Quality – Any new chocolate must meet certain requirements to get past our strict tasting panel. If one of the panel gives a score below 9/10 then we simply won’t offer the chocolate to our customers.

Longevity – We are immensely proud of our historic routes and in this fast moving, ever changing world, we take pride in our tradition and heritage. Our rose and violet creams are the same ones that William sold on that first day of opening, back in 1927. We have survived and prospered over the last 90 years and with the launch of our Ambleside store and an online service, we fully intend to be around for the next 100 years.

After all life is too short, so why settle for ordinary chocolate?

I was really disappointed in my order as one of the items was purchased as a Christmas gift, but the best before date was January (even though the website stated all non sale items had a long date). I was obviously sold old stock. I was offered to return the chocolate at my own cost and they would send newer chocolate out. I declined as why would I want to spend more money on behalf of friars' error. I believe a goodwill gesture of my postage being refunded would have been more of an appropriate thing to do. As for the chocolates, they were a lot smaller than expected and disappointingly didn't live up to my expectations. Won't be purchasing again.

We have a standard policy of a 3 month shelf life with our products we pack to ensure that they are kept fresh with them being a perishable item and replenish our shelves as the stock is needed. We do list the weight of the product but perhaps we need to include the dimensions also, this will be addressed. Again, we do apologise for your disappointment caused. I ordered 2 Friars Butter Tablet to give to a friend. They were delivered on the 2nd November with a Best Before Date of 01.11.20. Need I say more!

Not been tasted yet as this 'chocolate games controller' is an add on Christmas pressie for a 13yr old. Bit disappointed on receiving (packaged well, arrived in good condition) as not even sure if it is made by Friars as there is no mention of the Friars brand on the box so maybe they just sell this item. I paid more hoping for delicious chocolate when i probably could have purchased the same item elsewhere.

Bit lackluster this time round. Bought about fifty pounds worth of chocolates. One box of rum truffles must have been old or faulty. My partner said a couple of them were solid and dry. Spend hundreds with them before and all been ok. Makes me start thinking about looking elsewhere.

Sadly 4 packs of these chocolates didn’t come up to expectations as the date was late 2020 and they tasted stale. Won’t buy these again.

I’m really sorry for writing this, but I genuinely didn’t like it. Out of 4 batches I would eat one, don’t know if it’s me handling poorly my new dairy free mandatory diet, but no I won’t buy it again, sorry.

I have ordered several times from you and the presentation has been very good, however on this occasion it was poor. There were several chocolates turned upside down which shows poor quality control, this was not for me but for my sisters birthday. I cut the tape and arrange myself as I would have been embarassed to present it to her as it had arrived.

Chocolates were lovely but all the liqueur has leaked into the box and none left in the cherry chocolates. We’re a gift too so I am a bit disappointed

I sent them to my grandchildren, as I miss them there are four of them so I sent two boxes the children are 20years 17years 10year and 8 years. They have had one each, they said they were very dry, they had to have a drink with them. I bought these for them as when I have visited I buy the macaroons in Bath and they quarrel over them. Sorry won’t send them again

I am sure the chocolates are delicious but they were not for me as I am Linda Davis, the email is mine and I filled in the order with my details as a new customer, a gift card for Joan, her address, and with my payment details. I don't knock what I did wrong other than not scroll to the bottom of the order confirmation. The chocolates came to my address and I had to forward them to Joan

Hi I have rated the chocolate not friars. The chocolate taste was nice but the alcohol taste was very slight. So for the cost I don't think I had value for money. Regards Martin Payne.

Delivered safely, on time and in beautifully presented packaging. Really looked the part. Sadly my more 'discerning'vegan son really didn't enjoy the taste-finding them too sweet with a lack of depth of flavour. "cheap candy...leaves a nasty taste" So a disappointing gift that are remain uneaten.

My delivery arrived on time but was completely battered, though the chocolates were very well protected which meant there was no damages to products themselves. Expensive chocolates, look appealing but unfortunately the taste and quality does not reflect the price paid. Unfortunately will not be buying again.

Producy advertised as gluten free. When arrived the ingredients read 'may contain gluten' So wasted time and money. False advertising isn't cool.

Thank you for your review. We do not advertise our products as gluten free on the website, we do however have a section for products that do not list gluten as an ingredient. If there is a risk of traces being present with any of these products then we state this under the list of ingredients. Two stars is for their service. With the exception of their fruit range which is novel and interesting I was bitterly disappointed by the rest of my expensive order. The signature range, and ginger range with heavy, sickly and simply nothing special. Given the reviews I was disappointed.
