Pre-arrival information arrived at the same time as the email which advised it would be arriving, which was slightly confusing but no issue. The travel directions from the South were terrible (in terms of advising to exit at J40 instead of J36) and added an unnecessary 90 minutes to the journey, though I note these have now been updated in more detail. However the actual cottage was lovely and we would definitely utilise again

Thank you for your feedback Cath; it's very much appreciated as it helps us learn what we do well and where we need to improve. I wanted to take the opportunity to reply and provide clarification for you and other guests who might read your feedback. The pre-arrival information you refer to makes guests aware of the roadworks on Kirkstone Pass between Ambleside and Ullswater. These are substantial works which involve full road closures for extended periods of time. I am sorry if you travelled to Junction 40 instead of Junction 36, and I can appreciate the additional travel time would be significant to reach the property you booked. If you could take a moment to check the information we provided about the diversion, it does state that it applies to guests travelling from the South to the Ullswater Area. The property you booked is in Backbarrow near Ulverston. It says, "To avoid the roadworks [on Kirkstone Pass], guests travelling from the South to the Ullswater area, specifically Glenridding, Patterdale or Hartsop, should leave the M6 Motorway at Junction 40 Penrith and NOT Junction 36 Kendal." In relation to the emails, I'm unsure why you would have received two emails at the same time because I can see from the email log that we sent you an email on the 4th of April at 21.25, which is when you placed your booking, and then we sent your pre-arrival email on the 27th May at 08:59. Service would be improved if the accommodation provided a welcome folder with key information about the apartment as is usual with other providers. For example; instructions on how to use washing machine and oven, local restaurants and numbers, take away services. Kitchen equipment was generally OK but no sharp knives and some other useful items. A review would be useful.

I did think that, once I had paid the deposit the balance would be taken automatically from the same card but this wasn't the case. Perhaps information about this could be clearer? Otherwise booking and information about the property was fine

Excellent communication from Herwick Cottages. We could not fault the house in any way. My only complaint was that I teleported a few days before our holiday to make sure that the beds would all be made up as doubles only to find that when we arrived this had not been done and one was a twin room. We had to push the beds together and use the bedding from the double bunk bed and make do. We did however have a fantastic holiday.

Herdwick provided all the information required for our short break and even followed up with a phone call to check. Stayed in cottages for 25 years and no company have double checked all was ok before.

Beautiful cottage that was well equipped and very clean. Nicely situated in Patterdale with easy access to the Patterdale Hotel, Red Lion and some great walks.

Stunning house set in a beautiful location with a good pub right next door. Great information sent although we really wanted to have local maps and information about walks from the house. On the last day as we were packing we found a whole drawer full so would have been good to know about this beforehand. Other than that, excellent.

Great location and very high quality accommodation - very clean and tidy with good furniture and equipment All needs catered for, kitchen perfect for cooking at home but there's plenty of food establishment nearby. Only thing I missed was a washing machine as we travel light, but no problem really, would go again

Herwick Cottages themselves provided an excellent service. It was easy to book, and the information provided was clear and accurate. I nearly had to cancel due to getting Covid, and it would have been useful if the claim form (from the insurance company) could have been printed off rather than completed online. I needed to get proof of illness from my GP, but to organise this it seemed that I needed to start the cancellation process, which I did not want to do as I hoped to recover in time to go on the holiday (which indeed I did). Also, I am due to get my deposit back, but I do not know how this will be done. The cottage was in a fantastic position, but it was not as clean as I would have expected (eg the duvet in the main bedroom was stained and it needs replacing). It might be useful for Herdwick Cottages to periodically inspect the properties that they are advertising.

Regarding the cleanliness of The cottage, we will pass on your feedback to the owners and cleaner. Herdwick Cottages do periodically check the properties being let.
