In summary, my experience of The Original Bed Company is as follows: Ordered a bed which came in good time. The slats were affected by mould to various degrees. Contacted Original Bed Company via email and provided photographs and also explained I have an allergy to mould. OBC sent replacement slats. Replacements slats were affected by mould to various degrees. I contacted the OBC via email, provided photographs and requested the bed be collected and a refund given. In returning the bed, I had to package all parts up and wait for it to be collected. Repacking the bed took hours. In having to repackage the bed, I was exposed to the mould and experienced distressing symptoms which lasted a number of days. In having to repackage the bed, I had to purchase tape to secure the box properly and clingfilm which I wound round the boxes in an attempt to prevent mould affecting me and to protect the carpet from the packing boxes. I would not order a bed from this company again for fear of once again, receiving a substandard item, having my health undermined and loosing money.

Hi Charlotte, Many thanks for your review. All of our slats are heat treated at high temperature, and then sealed to ensure that the wood is completely sterile and mold can't grow. That said, we fully take your concerns on board and I'm pleased you were able to make use of our no quibbles return policy. it pains me to write this review because I really wanted to love this bed. We purchased a cherry - stained Kipling style bed. It was delivered on time, at the end of March and when we had a minor delivery problem the customer service was very helpful. Though it was delivered end of march, we didn't start using it until the beginning of July, because our move was postponed (It was delivered to the new house directly, and it stayed indoors in an office space while we waited to move). When putting the bed together, I noticed that the bed is made of plywood and not real solid wood - the lines of the plywood are distinct and visible through the stain. You can also see places where the wood was tacked/nailed together and then puttied. It looks cheap, but the bed functions and the price was good so I didn't want to quibble over it. However today, December 15th, 5 and a half months since we began sleeping on the bed, the inside beam that is meant to hold the frame slats broke off my husband's side of the bed. He's currently upstairs drilling it back in place. We're really disappointed with the product. I wanted to be able to recommend it because it's hard to find beds with beautiful classic styles these days, but i really can't.

I'm sure the bed is nice, but the delivery men refused to take it upstairs as they said the packaging was dirty and it would mark my walls. I asked if I could take it out of the packaging and they said no. I rang the OBC and a very unhelpful man who refused to give his name said yes, that's just the way it often was. So, despite paying for a premium delivery to the room, I have a mattress and several boxes standing in the hall. I don't think it's ok to take no responsibility for how your goods are delivered.

Ordered what looked to be a fab bed. It arrived quickly. As soon as I opened the first box I saw damage. I wrapped it back up after sending photos to my partner. He rang to arrange collection. He said they kept trying to suggest ways to keep it. He pushed for a collection which was meant to have been today. We even had the message to prove it. For some reason, after waiting all day, 7am-9pm for a collection, I think not, we are suddenly told the collection hadn't gone through so pick another day. Disgusted. My time is as precious as the next person's. I refuse to waste another day. I don't recommend. The bed certainly was worth no more than £200, yet it cost around £700. Never again. Absolutely livid!!!

Hi, Many thanks for your review. Apologies that there was damage to part of the base. When these problems arise, we look to provide a variety of solutions including sending out replacement parts. This is simply meant as an option, so sorry you felt that this came across as trying to convince you to keep it. It's usually a customer's preferred option on the rare occasion there is damage. I note that you were refunded straight away as per our no quibbles return policy. I can also see that your collection was booked in, but the collection company failed. They also usually give a 3 hour window outlining when they will be with you, to save having to wait in all day. Sorry, and I have sent them a message to understand why this did not happen for you. Finally, our bedsteads are hand made, using solid castings, heavy gauge materials, powder coat finish and genuine brass. We take pride in offering an excellent product at a fair price, and the majority of our business comes from repeat customers. I do understand your frustration, but I note that you only opened the base box, saw some damage, and wrapped it back up. I'm confident that had you fully opened and assembled the bed, you would perhaps have made a different judgement on its value. Apologies once again. The Original Bedstead Company

Good night we bought our bed about a year now and it is stripping, one of the ball fell off and almost sliced my arm. It seems to be also oxidising or a for of rust. See pictures attached. I need to get a refund or the supply of better parts. Please can someone ring or email me. Kind regards

Bed fine, delivery catastrophic. No consultation or prior notification. If I hadn't called to chase, the bed would have been left on the doorstep or the delivery failed for a fortnight as we were about to go on holiday.

Our courier partners usually do send out multiple messages before attempting delivery and do not typically deliver without your express consent. I’ve had 3 single beds from this firm which I was totally happy with. So I ordered a double bed with confidence that it would also be great. Not so. The medium mattress arrived first, and was fine on the floor, though a problem to get up from. When the base was assembled it turned out to be so hard, I’m now back on one of the single beds, despite trying it for a few weeks. I’m now considering replacing it with a sprung divan base.

Don't buy these beds. The only straight-forward part of dealing with The Original Bed company was parting with our money; the woman who took the order was extremely helpful. After that, the company has been hard to reach and shambolic. After an extremely long wait, and little communication our beds arrived. The couriers were unpleasant and rude. The beds themselves were not what we ordered and it was clear that the quality wasn't worth, compared to the rest of the market, the relatively high price tag. When trying to rectify the situation the company has been slow, hard to reach and it has taken over 6 weeks to get our money back. All in all, I'd be the last person to recommend these beds. A shame and a waste of time.

Hi Alice, Many thanks for your review. I can see here that you ordered two beds in a bespoke colour, that were sent in the standard painted white in error and subsequently returned straight away without being removed from the packaging, assembled, or slept on. Apologies for this error. As a family business, operating for over 20 years, we take great pride in the quality of the products we produce, and I'm sure that you would have been able to see this had the beds been taken out of the packaging. I totally accept the reasons for you not doing this though, given they were the wrong colour, and we have made changes internally to ensure this extremely rare error does not happen again. I also note that you ordered two mattresses with the beds and decided to keep them; and it's pleasing to see you are happy with the level of comfort and quality of sleep they provide. In regards to the refund, we always credit the card items were paid for on, once a return has been processed. However, it appears you paid via bank transfer and there was a delay in getting your bank details from you to make a transfer back to you. We will be sure to look to introduce a system which is more proactive in chasing your bank details should the initial request not be successful. Thanks once again for your feedback. Ugh, this is one of those life lessons where I didn't read the Trust Pilot reviews. Absolutely no people skills or customer service. I was treated horrendously by them. I ordered a bed (not cheap, just over £1000) two weeks ago. I emailed to ask if there was one in stock and ready for Xmas. They abruptly said 'No, 9-12 weeks for delivery'. OK, no worries. Not particularly friendly, but no problem so far. They then send me an email saying 'Your order has been processed and we are now working on getting it to you". I assumed, as would any sentient being, that this mean my ORDER had been processed and they were trying to get it to me. It then went on to say, WHAT NOW? And I quote 'Now we'll get your products ready for despatch.' So I send an email saying "Wow, thank you so much for doing it so quickly. Really made my Xmas!" No reply. In the meantime, I sell my existing bed and buy a new mattress which is about to be delivered. 4 days later, as I expect they are busy, I call to ask if it is easier if I book a courier. I manage to speak to essentially an automaton. Frankly an answer machine would have been more empathetic and understanding. He condescendingly implied that I was an idiot for assuming that 'Your order has been processed' actually meant that. He said that it meant that my payment had been processed. Why didn't it say that then? Besides, I knew that. I already had their confirmation as such and it's debited my bank. I ask why they don't just send an email saying 'Your payment has been processed.' to which he said, 'No one's ever misinterpreted it before.' That is surely a lie. Both my husband and I read that email and deduced the same thing. Not only that but he said that my email saying I was so happy it had been finished earlier (when it hadn't) didn't warrant a reply because it 'didn't have any evidence attached that I thought it had been finished earlier.' Really? What were they expecting? A brain scan? A photo of me selling my old bed? An affadavit? A selfie of my jumping up and down? I asked if it would be possible just to change one word in the email to 'Your PAYMENT has been processed.'? Then he slammed the phone down on me. Nice. I'm sure they won't even deliver it now. BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Hi India, Many thanks for taking the time to provide a review. I notice you state that you should have read the reviews. We currently have a star rating of 4.8 out of 5 based on 1,265 verified reviews. As a small family business that's been trading for over 20 years, we're very proud of this. Looking at our records, I can see that after ordering the bed, which was advertised as 9-11 at the point of order, you were sent a payment confirmation also stating a 9-11 week lead time. On receiving this, you sent an email to see if this could be made, quicker, but were told that it could not be. We value all of our customers and don't like to push others ahead in the queue. I will speak to the team about adding the word sorry though, to sound less abrupt, which we take on board. I can also see you were sent a 'Thank you for your order' email, which made you believe your bed was ready. Again this gave a lead time of 9-11 weeks. In regards to the 'Getting ready for despatch' the very next sentence states that this includes making, packing, and shipping the item. We have used this exact process of quoting the lead time at the point of order, the payment confirmation receipt, and the 'Thank you for your order' email with the same wording for over a year now and we have not had this confusion. We will however look to see how the wording can be changed, given the way that you interpreted it, and the subsequent issues it's caused by you selling your bed. In regards to the phone call. I have listened to this and will speak to our customer services representative about sounding less like a robot, but we do often look to adopt a more neutral tone when the person on the other end is raising their voice. He does also on numerous occasions state that he understands your situation, but was unable to get the bed to you any quicker. This is unfortunately true, and whilst I understand that it was not what you wanted to hear, it was more a case of being honest and upfront with you rather than lacking empathy. We never encourage our employees to make a promise they can't meet. He did however at the end of the call promise to look at the wording, which is in hand, before ending the call. Finally, as mentioned above, we are a long-standing family business that will certainly deliver your bed; and do so within the 9-11 weeks we have promised throughout the process. Will not use again. Bed 2 weeks late. Arrived with wrong slates. Holding bolts cross threaded. Customer Service guy made all the excuses under the sun each one picked apart until he hung up having to band sid his ego. All of the above for a bedstead costing £450.

Hi Kevin, Apologies that the slats were incorrect, I can see that a new set of slats were sent out immediately on a next day service, which is great, but sorry if the person you spoke to was not more understanding whilst on the phone in regards to your frustration about the error occurring in the first place. I was surprised that you mentioned the bed being late, as our lead times are extremely reliable at present, despite the current climate. Looking into it, your order was quoted at eight to ten weeks and was despatched within that timeframe. Our couriers then deliver within 3-5 days. I'll certainly take it up with them as to why this particular order took longer. I'm sure you will have the bed for many years; I've had mine for 14 now, and it's as new. Exceptional longevity for £450. When it does come to changing though I hope you will feel less aggrieved by your experience and may once again consider us. We ordered a double wooden bed from this company. Having paid £1000 I was disappointed that I received very little from them in communication of when we would expect the delivery. Further I was then told it was ready and given the details of the delivery firm. This firm was only offering one date for delivery. Then when I rejigged everything to fit in with this, the delivery team sent me an email saying they would deliver from 7am to 9am. The delivery guys were really great, they called beforehand and couldn't have been more helpful however organising the removal of the old bed and sorting out logistics is not easy in lockdown. The main issue is the actual bed - the instructions were not for the model we ordered so completely useless and very complicated. The parts are not named and neither very importantly is whether certain boards are fitted up or down - this is very important in the base because the holes are not central and without the instructions, it is impossible to know which way up they go until you've put that section together. The spanner supplied was very cheap and did not fit on the nuts easily and further there was not room to turn the nuts in the recesses. In short, if you want to make lockdown utter hell, order one of their wooden beds - it looks two of us 6 hours to put together! 6 hours!!! Cheap parts, the packaging was ridiculous and took almost an hour to unpack... there were NO proper instructions!!! and 100s of unmarked parts. I would never ever order a wooden bed from this company again. The only upside was we slept well because we were utterly exhausted by the time it was finally put together. There is also a scratch on the headboard but there is no way I'm taking this apart again to fix a new one... Very very disappointing overall...

Please note that In regards to Arrow XL delivery service, 90% of the time they offer multiple delivery days. In remote locations with no nearby towns vans can sometimes only be in that area one day a week. Unfortunately I can see by your postcode that your address fits within the group. I'm glad that the two hour window and pre-call were made. We are partnering with Arrow XL because they are very efficient with Large & Heavy deliveries. Arrow XL is the UK's leading 2-man home delivery specialist company and deliver over 2 million customer orders every year. We do have grouped instructions for some beds, as they are assembled using the exact same process; with the holes and fittings being identical. Most customer's find assembly fairly easy and we include a picture for each step, this helps guide a customer as to which way round a specific part should be attached, for those holes that aren't centred, we'll be sure to look at these again though to see if it can be made any clearer. All our boxes are labelled and flat packed with standard and secure packaging process. The additional labels will be added and updated accordingly. We will also contact you directly about resolving the damage to the top of the bed, in a manner that does not cause any inconvenience to you. I ordered my first bed and it arrived dented, then I ordered a sprayed bed which took 5 weeks. When this arrived it hasn’t been sprayed to a high standard. The paint had run and it had been painted over a black bed, the paint began to come off. Because they had not even primed the bed. The screws for the bed were bent, the planks for the bed some were chipped, they tried to blame this on me.

Dear Lesley, Many thanks for your review. Sorry to hear of your disappointment. Some models do take longer than others, with the lead time for each design being advertised on their particular product page. Our sprayer is very conscientious, and any drips are sanded and resprayed to ensure a smooth finish. I'm unsure how he missed this one but I will pass on your disappointment to him. In terms of the chips, I can see that these are positioned under where the collars of the Selkirk sit. Because these are made of metal and have fairly sharp hidden inner edges, when pushed tightly into place there can be some chipping under the collar. This is completely hidden, and I can assure you though that the paint has completely bonded, hence why it has only occurred in this particular position. We pre-fit each screw fully to ensure that they are straight and have no cross threading, so it would be great if you could send us a picture as per our telephone conversation, allowing us to get an understanding of which ones were bent. Finally, in regards to our heavy gauge sprung slats, we have used these for many years, and should customer's have any issues we are more than happy to send out replacements straight away. Approximately 10 years ago we purchased a Braemar bed for £1100 from Dreams beds, they sold this bed on behalf of the Original Bed Company at the time although it was a lot of money we thought it would be nice for the children, a heirloom to be handed down to them. We'd had the bed for roughly 5 or 6 years and we noticed that the brass was beginning to tarnish so we contacted Dreams and they were very good and they replaced the bed with not to much trouble at all. That was in 2016 now the same thing is happening again. With the Dreams shop now closed in Leicester we decided to contact the Original Bed Company, having contacted them they said could we send them photos of said faults, which we did. We then received an Email from the company, saying that they were very sorry about our complaint, but there was nothing they would be able to do about it because the 5 year warranty had expired but that we should have the bed refurbished by a refurbishing company. We recently had a look at the website of the said bed company and found that the £1100 bed we paid for was now £1700. Although we wont be able to get anything done about our problem, I just wanted to warn other potential customers of being taken in by false promises

I ordered a bed And mattress 9 weeks ago. Other than the email saying they had my order I have had no notification from the company with any expected dates, etc. I phones two weeks ago to see when to expect delivery and was told it was down as the week of the 25th of November. As I yet again have had no contact from the company I have spent the whole morning trying to contact anyone at any of the phone numbers online and they all just ring out. No please wait, no please leave a message. I just want to know when the Bed is due to arrive. Why can I not contact you?

Bed and mattress ordered 29.03.19 with 6-8 week delivery period. Due 10-24 May 2019. Now on 9 weeks and still not here. Been given 2 delivery slots a day apart and both were cancelled by courier Arrow XL during the time slot I had been given. So have taken time off work for no reason. Only contact is by text message confirming slot then cancelling. Cannot get through to Arrow XL on web chat or answering phones which go on and on with a 0333 charge number. I waited 16 mins before giving up. Emails to Original Bedstead go unanswered and have left 3 voice messages today on their various numbers and no-one has rung me back. Paid a LOT of money for a bed and mattress and wish I had just gone to John Lewis......

When I opened the boxes my heart sank seeing so many parts and fixings (screws, bolts, nuts) etc. However this was just the start of our problems. The instructions were not fit for purpose. Illustrations were inconsistent such that pieces were shown one way round in one illustration and then another way round in the next one. The parts were incorrectly (and inconsistently) referred to by number - i.e. the same part was referred to by two different part numbers at different stages of the instructions. But the biggest issue of all was that the struts/mattress support design bore no resemblance to the instructions. I telephoned customer service who were also confused. They admitted the warehouse had changed the bed design but the instructions hadn't been updated to reflect this. In other words the instructions were for a totally different design. In fact they told me they didn't have any instructions for our design and had to talk me through it. At this point it become clear the fixings packs also hadn't been updated as we didn't have enough of any one type of nuts/bolts to assemble it. We had to improvise ending up with odd parts used and many pieces left over. I let customer service know but instead of responding they stopped communicating with us. No apology, no offer to check the installation or to send out new fixings.

Booked a delivery and a day off work advised delivery would be between 13.30 & 15.30 only to then be told it would not arrive until 19.30. Having spoken to both the delivery company and retailer neather wished to take responsibility and advised if I wasn't in for the delivery to book another date.

Hi Steve, Many thanks for your review and apologies that your item will be delivered late. On phoning us we stated that we would need to liaise with our delivery company to get an understanding of why the delivery was late, which we did as soon as you got off the phone to us, ten minutes before you left the review. Sorry if you felt that this was not taking responsibility, we simply couldn't tell you why the item was late or provide a solution without speaking to the delivery company first. We have now learnt that the vehicle carrying your bedstead broke down, so they sent a new vehicle to load the undelivered goods onto, to ensure that customer's weren't let down. All customers were then contacted to advise a new delivery time, with the driver working out of hours to ensure they get done. I completely understand your frustration. However, I hope that on receiving your bed you will begin to feel that neither the product, nor the service received after the delivery vehicle breakdown were one star experiences. The obc bed I received, the headboard was badly finished with many marks. But the worst is the design change. I’ve got 4 other obc beds, and no problems. The skates on these beds clicked in. Now the slates just sit on frame. They are of less quality and guess what. The bed creaks. This is not the frame but the slates that lay under mattress. I wish the bed to be returned and full refund. I would like one of the original designs and not this bad design. Photos attached. Please note. Not delivery damage. Manufacturing issue.
