About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“I have been attending Halo Hereford (holmer road) since December 2024. I started attending due to recommendation from a physio to build strength, and as I had received a discount through work I chose Halo over any other gym available near to my home. I had never been to a gym before, and found the whole thing quite terrifying. I was inducted by Sadie, who was incredibly gentle with me and encouraging when I was wobbling. I soon started to attend the small groups, my first being with Philippa on Christmas Eve! I hadn’t lifted a weight before, and through her encouragement and the relationships I’ve built with other regular gym-users, I’ve tripled my ability to lifting 9kg. The atmosphere Philippa creates through Wednesday Small Group and Friday Metaburn is exactly the motivation you need for a challenging class, and she designs the tasks clearly, explaining how to safely progress. She has become an absolute example to myself for how to look after a female mother-body with growth, respect and joy. Having had a persistently unhealthy relationship with my body since childhood, and eating disorders since age 11, I have never felt a respect towards my body. But now I am able to see myself within a mindset of growth, not failure; I am stronger than I have ever been, and as such am able to hold my children better, engage with people with more confidence, and see my body as something to work with- not against. I cannot emphasise how world changing this is for me. I wish I’d come sooner- but perhaps I wouldn’t have engaged with it as meaningfully. I also attend bootcamp with Helen on a Monday, who is so brilliant at building our resilience in with an encouraging and fun attitude. I have also recently started Monday evening Pilates with Tam, who leads the class with a completely zen atmosphere that just connects you to the movements in such a clear and cohesive way. Thank you to all the staff who so professionally and kindly welcome us- I was so scared of going to the gym, but Halo has been the most inclusive space. It’s completely transformed my expectations of the whole experience and I recommend to all I can about the staff, classes and facilities.”

“Swimming is appalling. Mainly aimed at pontypool leisure. swim club prior never leave on time and aren’t ever prompted to leave when they’re supposed to. Management is dire. Almost a booked out lane swim, so they decide to close two lanes for training without any prior notice leaving everyone un able to actually swim as intended. Never know what you’re going to get with torfaen leisure, one day it’s fine, the next it’s terrible”

“The gym is good, it has good equipment with a nice range of stuff to use (pretty much everything you need). However, there is young lads that go in there and trash the place which is very annoying, they leave their weights on the floor and keep the gym untidy which agrovates me. Also I think there should be a more larger range of free weights such as a free weight bench press and a free weight squat rack which will be helpful for me to build my form whilst training compound lifts, also I think there should be a more larger range of leg machines such as a hack squat and calf raise machines etc, also I when equipment breaks it takes a long time for them to fix it and get people to come and check them, the leg extention machine has been broken for 2 months now and gives me a less wider range for my leg days, other than that it’s a good little gym to get started in, the workers there are very polite and talkative and always welcoming.”

“I’ve always found the Bromyard Halo clean and the staff friendly. It would be great if it had a swimming pool somewhere around Bromyard and maybe more fitness classes during the day but the gym is adequate. An adduction/inner and outer thigh machines would be a great addition to what’s on offer.”

“Only use the swimming pool, but have always found it highly satisfactory, with pleasant and friendly lifeguards. Changing rooms good, although hairdryers don't always work, and it is sometimes a while before they are mended.”

“It's as good as it gets. My only complaint is that you have to spend 10 minutes fighting with some of the lockers before they actually lock.”
