About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

The new refit of the Cwmbran gym has increased it's size, but the quality of the equipment, particularly Cardio is really poor compared to the Technogym equipment that it has replaced. I assume this saved Halo money? The removal of actual spin bikes from the gym and reaplcemet with very shonky 80's 'home gym' style bikes stands out. Swimming pool and classes are good but the times these take place make them difficult to access working regular office hours.

I have three issues with the centre: 1. Parents of children being in the shower area of the pool in their outdoor shoes. The areas is always full of dirt, muck and what looks like dog mess. It's not hygiene for those of us waiting to use the pool. 2. There are no classes in the evening, such as pirates, yoga or tai chi. I work 9-5 Monday to Friday, so have no access to any classes that suit me .im beginning to think my membership isnt worth it. 3. The sauna and steam room gabemt been available for years, what a waste!

Disappointed that the swimming pool shuts so early during the X Mas period. No lunchtime or evening lane swimming Seems pointless paying a monthly membership in December. At lease the lunchtime lane swimming could be kept on non bank holidays.

Roof is leaking, so some equipment is getting wet, gutters are not maintained so the water pours over the side of the historic building. Stopped using the showers as the plastic curtains in the family room are brown on the bottom and shower trays an floor are not very clean.

Visited the cafe at Cafartha Park today with my grandson. The poor staff were freezing as we're we, very off putting. People walked in then straight out commenting on how cold it was. Food was great as always but goes cold so quickly Staff are so accommodating, I felt sorry for the staff having to keep coats on. It was warmer outside!!!!

There are works going on in the children's soft play resulting in load noise and part of the soft play my 18 month boys would use has been out of action for months. Why have we still been charged the full amount ???? Not really the way to keep customers i feel.

Hi Kay, Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. We’re sorry to hear about the noise and the part of the soft play being out of action, and that you’ve been charged the full amount. That isn’t the experience we want for families. We’ll pass your feedback to the team to review access to the soft play areas and any disruption caused by ongoing works, the works in soft play have been reported. We are being hampered by the availability of the company due to be completing the repairs and the parts required for that fix. We hope to make your next visit more enjoyable. Team Halo

Since joining Halo approximately 4–5 months ago, I have consistently highlighted issues with the cleanliness of the changing rooms, toilets, and shower areas. Despite assurances that these areas are cleaned nightly, I have found them persistently dirty when arriving for my swim at 6:30 a.m. The facilities have never appeared to be in a suitably clean condition at that time. In addition to cleanliness, I have repeatedly raised concerns about maintenance issues, including toilets being out of order and soap dispensers not functioning. On two separate occasions, I requested to speak with Duty Managers, but no action was taken to resolve these matters. Most recently, today, 11.12.2025, both female toilets in the changing area were out of order, leaving swimmers without access to appropriate facilities. While the disabled toilet was available, one of the female toilets has now been out of service for nearly six weeks. This prolonged delay in repair is unacceptable, particularly when significant investment has recently been made in upgrading the gym and atrium areas. It raises the question of why essential facilities such as toilets are not being prioritised. On this occasion, I requested to speak directly with the Manager rather than another Duty Manager, as previous escalations have not resulted in improvements. I expect a direct response to this matter and a clear plan of action to address these ongoing issues. I would like to emphasise that the frontline staff are unfailingly polite and pleasant. However, there appears to be a lack of urgency in addressing these concerns. Furthermore, I was informed by a receptionist that lifeguards are responsible for cleaning the changing rooms. Given that many of these staff members are young and not trained in cleaning standards, this arrangement seems inappropriate. Cleaning duties should be undertaken by designated cleaning staff, just as lifeguards should focus on their primary responsibility of ensuring swimmer safety.

Points are for the unmatched discounted membership price of £13.65 and the perks of a having a hot sauna. Only 2 stars though because gym equipment is often out of order due to being broken (step machines, treadmills and fixed weight machines) and the showers are more often than not dirty, clogged with hair and stinky. The swimming pool showers most often stink of urine and have hair on the cubicle walls and clogging the drains. They sometimes have very low water pressure and/or freezing cold water. The gym showers always have clogged smelly drains, frequently stink of dirty drains and get flooded, and are sometimes out of use altogether. Gym equipment and the gym itself could do with a good dust and hoover! I'm looking forward to the imminent refurb!

I have been attending the center for more than 10 years but it seems the cleanliness of the the facilities is getting worse. There needs to be a change in the way hygiene of the place is managed. I have rated this a poor rating for that reason.

Please review the cleanliness. Strength & conditioning room needs a deep clean. Walls and mirrors cleaned, Equipment dusted and washed, machines pulling out and cleaned around. The floor and wall mirrors need immediate fixing. Squat rack floor boarding needs to be renewed. Equipment has been taken out of the room for classes and not put back. Tumble weed, (dust and hair piles) under chairs and in the corners of class studios rooms needs sorting. Where are the instructors, advertised classes not covered. Fed up of complaining to be told cleanliness is of an acceptable standard. Not nice having to brush your leggings off after doing floor work. Skin, fingers nails, mud, dust and god knows what else. This is not an acceptable standard.

No one answering 3 options of phone lines, all day. Queue untenable for help in leisure centre . Staff on reception ignore queue of people waiting to check in and take 20 minutes a answering one persons query on desk.On friday a member of staff was sticking tinsel around the reception area and ignoring queue . We had to wait 20 minutes plus. My online log in isn't working despite 3 phone calls last week. Can't book classes on line in the leisure centre or on the phone. To top it all had an induction booked for today and was told on arrival through terrible weather to the leisure centre that no staff were available to do it. Not the best start.

Not enough equipment for busy periods and the pool is not open enough. Both together does not warrant over £30 a month membership

I found the pool to be dirty whenever I visited, with children often playing in the swimming lanes. Whenever I used the sauna it seemed to be a place where regualrs would be chatting at full volume about their work week, which i found extremely jarring as it is my understanding that it is supposed to be a place of quiet and relaxation. Then to top it off, the gym was always full of young teenage boys, shouting, jumping on equipment, and just gerneally using it as a place to hang out. I was really dissapointed with my short time here and certainly wont be back or reccomending it to anyone else.

Hi Kerri, Thank you for sharing your experience. Our facility is regularly cleaned and has received frequent positive comments regarding its cleanliness. If you encountered any areas that did not meet your satisfaction, we encourage you to report them so we can check and address them promptly. Halo is a community trust, and if customers wish to discuss among themselves in the sauna and steam room, we do not have any policies against that. We apologise if the gym was crowded with juniors; if you observed any inappropriate behaviour, reporting it to us would have allowed us to take appropriate action. We understand your concerns, and currently, we are experiencing a shortage of gym staff, so we rely on members to inform us of any issues so we can respond accordingly. Kind regards, Team Halo

The site at Pontypool is the main facility I use. Feels like everything is always broken and dirty. The staff are friendly and helpful but are constantly apologising to everyone for the state of the building/ facility.
