About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“The cafes in Merthyr and Aberfan closes too early. Surely it would make more sense to be open during these peak times. Closing the cafes at 6pm just seems crazy. I take my children swimming and it would be nice to use the cafe and maybe catch up on some work while I'm there. Unfortunaltely because you close the cafe at 6pm means I can't even have a coffee and I have to sit in the swimming spectators area where it is too hot. I'm not the only one who shares this dissatisfaction as several of the parents share the same opinion and the cafe staff aren't the nicest.”

“I make a point of not giving bad reviews however I am so upset by Halo's response to my recent dealings with them that I must register my feelings. I joined Halo Ledbury after deciding I need to tackle my fitness levels back in April. The classes are very well attended and places are limited but I managed to book an aquafit and a gym induction before I became incapacitated by back pain. I needed to allow myself time to recover or risk more serious injury before embarking on the plan to increase overall fitness. I contacted Halo and asked for suspension of my membership for 2 weeks. I was told that as my subscription was due to be taken in 8 days time this couldn't be stopped. Instead I was offered a lower payment for the following month of £20. I thanked them for doing this. I started statins in the meantime and suffered side effects of muscle and joint pain. Together with a 2 week break in Wales on I6th June, I felt the best thing for my health and finances was to cancel my subscription and rejoin at a later date. I could not find a way of doing this on the App so I emailed Ledbury again. I received a prompt reply which stated they could not stop my next payment (full month) as too short notice (again) but I could use my membership until 7/7/25. This ignored the fact that I am not fit enough to use any services I am completely dismayed by the attitude of Halo. I understand the organisation is a Social Enterprise but feel I have given them a huge donation, but it will be the last from me I'm afraid. I have been shown zero compassion or understanding. By the way, I'm a 67 year old pensioner.”

I agree that machines that become out of order do take a while to get attention this is due to the reporting and response from our equipment provider, I will raise this concern with them. Please let me know any specific areas you feel could be cleaner, the team work really hard cleaning the gym and centre but if we are missing something we would love to know. Many thanks Corina

“A great facility to have locally . Friendly reception staff when present . Ladies changing room needs a deep clean and standards need to be maintained . Walls still show evidence of old sticky tape from previous posters ! There is a solvent available to remove this . Music is often played too loudly spoiling the relaxing nature of swimming . Actual pool is obviously well maintained, but pool side could be improved by less clutter.”

“I love the classes. The dance, Zumba and aqua classes are very good. Class instructors excellent.. I enjoy the circuits for 50 plus also the though hate the way it is so difficult to book in advance.. Don't like...the way classes are sometimes dropped at the last moment without cover. Even though the attendees have been warned by usual instructor in advance Also... cleaning huge issue. The pool changing rooms are really yuck.. Old plasters and tissues and unidentified stuff around the pool itself. Changing rooms really horrible . Showers full of hair and the cubicles never wiped down.Drains need regular deep cleaning, they often smell”

“All the staff in Ross-on-Wye are amazing. I only started swimming again 12 months ago and from day 1 they have always been welcoming, friendly and encouraging. I have limited mobility so need to use the 'basket' to get into and out of the pool. They never complain or 'raise their eyebrows' when they see me coming, we have a laugh and even when it broke down they put in place a contingency plan to get me out safely. They are all brilliant, thank you for employing such amazing people.”

“On the whole my experience is a good one. I have several gripes that I feel u should raise. I enjoy Aqua fit. The classes are Monday to Friday with 2 on a Thursday and nothing on Friday. Whenever someone is on leave or doesn’t show up, the class is cancelled because the instructor is not replaced. I find this annoying as do all the people who enjoy the class. The attitude of the management is lethargic to say the least. What’s wrong with a class on Friday as well? If people are p. Leave fill the class with someone else. It’s not a difficult class to teach. I could do it with my eyes closed. Also it would be nice to have a varied programme with a different instructor for every class. One in particular is boring and never changes her programme.”
