About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

Not the best I’ve been to. I signed up mainly for the pool but there often seems to be problems with the pool. Facilities aren’t the cleanest.

Opening times are pretty bad, understand it is a school so must shut some hours for their use/safety etc but would expect it to be open antleast for a few hours before more people work and later into the evenings and all day at weekends and more in summer holidays. Equipment and pricing are decent, although could do with a survey of what’s used and what’s not as are some machines that I’ve never seen used whereas another squat rack is needed as always in use. Some heavier weights e.g. kettle bells in the matts room would be good so don’t have to use cramped weights room. Otherwise pretty decent for the price.

Overall good staff. Centres are let down by lack of basic equipment to participate in classes, eg. hand weights and kettle bells. The weight plates are so worn, there’s sand coming out of them. Pontypool gym has a hole in the floor and has had a barrier round it like it’s some kind of “vip” area. Been this way for months. Plus the place could do with a deep clean. Classes are good, when you can get on them. There are definitely not enough of them. Leisure suite in Cwmbran has been out of action since Covid. Pontypool’s steam room and jacuzzi are both currently out of action too.

The welcome as a new member and induction were good. If you are unsure about how to use equipment you can just ask and that is good because you are not treated like your request is a burden to them. Equipment seems well maintained.

Aberfan is a lovely and friendly centre with so much to offer. From a lovely cup of coffee and brilliant facilities. My baby girl loves the swimming pool and the baby sessions they have there.

The gym is very spacious good variety of machines and weights, the biggest letdown is the state of the toilet. There are not enough toilets for the size of the lesson centre and they are often dirty.

Both the staff and fellow members at Bromyard Halo Centre have been extremely encouraging and helpful. My reason for not renewing my membership is because my exercise routine involves the use of a bench, wall and floor, all of which I have at home. Yes, there is other equipment available within the gym but currently I am not in a position to access and/or use them; when it is considered I am allowed to use the equipment, unsurpervised, I may well renew my membership - in the meantime I shall continue with my physio within the confines of my home. Thank you for being there and I wish everyone at the Halo Centre lots of fun.

Hi Mark, Thank you so much for your kind words. It really means a lot to us to hear that both the team and our members made a positive difference during your time at the Centre. We completely understand your decision to continue your routine at home, especially since it works for you right now. It’s great that you’ve found a way to keep up with your physio in a space that feels comfortable. Of course, we’ll miss having you around, but we hope to see you again when the time feels right and you're ready to make full use of the gym. Until then, take care and don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need a bit of support or motivation along the way. Wishing you all the best on your fitness journey, and thank you again for being part of our community. Kind regards, The Bromyard Centre

1. Lane swimming most often too crowded, particulaly in slow lane. Thought should be given to allocating more space for slow swimmers, who in my experience make up the majority. 2. Lane swimming very poorly catered for over weekends (2 slots each day). Far too much time given to 'family' and other social activites. Shorter opening hours don't help. 3. Poor control by life guards who do not enforce proper conduct. They are passive. Examples: allowing people to swim 2 or 3 abreast, chatting away, in a (slow) lane swim, as though it's a social swim. This messes up the space for others and should not be allowed; allowing children to splash about (often learning to swim with parent in attendance) ignoring directions and getting in the way. There are ample facilities for children, family and 'social' swimming and they shouldn't interfere with the prescribed lane times.

Hi John, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your lane swimming experience. We’re truly sorry to hear that the crowded lanes have impacted your visits, especially during peak times. Your suggestion for more space dedicated to slow swimmers is insightful, and we will take it into consideration as we look at scheduling options. We also appreciate your feedback on the weekend schedule and the conduct within the lanes. We do strive to maintain a focused swimming environment, and your observations regarding the lifeguards’ enforcement are noted. It’s important that everyone has a comfortable experience while swimming, and we will address these concerns internally at our regular staff training sessions. We genuinely value your input, and we hope to improve your experience in the future. Warm regards, Team Halo

I find the Centre very good with good facilities. My only downside is the strong smell of urine in the toilets in changing rooms.

It's conveniently located. However, the gym is regularly filthy, to the point I clean every single item before and after I use it. Teenagers seemingly clueless of gym etiquette, including mine (so they come with me to work out.) Would be great to see more staff present both in the gym (to help, assist or instruct) and on front desk.

Hi Genevieve, Thank you for your honest feedback. We appreciate you highlighting the gym's convenient location. We're sorry to hear about the cleanliness issues and the behavior of other gym-goers—this is not the experience we want for our members. We will certainly address your concerns with our cleaning team to ensure a cleaner environment for everyone. Your suggestion for more staff presence is also noted, and we are actively looking into increasing support in our gym area. We truly value your input, especially as you bring your teens along! Thank you for being a part of our community, and we hope to improve your experience in the future. Warm regards, Team Halo
