About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“It is impossible to get onto any spin classes not been since May 2025 and when one does come available it is usually too late to organize yourself as the class starts in 30 to 45 mins CRAZY”

“The gym at Cwmbran is fantastic, the gym at Pontypool is very tired. I swam at Pontypool on a Wednesday at 5:30pm recently. There were 15 people in 2 lanes which was ridiculous and dangerous. In my opinion there shouldn’t be more than 4 people per lane to accommodate the differing abilities. Also there appears to be less swim sessions at both Cwmbran and Pontypool.”

“The classes and facilities were good on the whole, but the sauna suite disappointed me the most that it wasn’t always working at pontypool leisure centre. It could do with a refit as it’s tired and worn.”

“Gym equipment always clean and well maintained as is the changing room. Staff always greet with a smiley face. They never appear stressed or unhappy to be in work. Good vibe. I would give a 5 star rating if the water tap was fixed..feels like ages now. Replaced with a tap and a bucket. Anything! I d give you an imaginary 6 star rating if you put a reminder in the changing rooms that staring at your phone for way over 3 minutes between sets may not demonstrate thoughtfulness etc! (I am being polite!) Shame the machines don't have a max 3 minute rest period alarm as a reminder.”

“The staff are very welcoming, cheerful and helpful. If we have any concerns about anything we feel able to talk to the staff. The biggest discussion point seems to be the popularity of aquarobics and that sometimes they are overcrowded. It is generally felt that classes should be a little smaller and more often.”

“The centre staff are very friendly and welcoming. The gym has a good level of equipment for a small centre, though elliptical machine no 3 seems to give a heart rate reading when not holding the handles and a couple of the weight machines seem to regularly have issues, like the lat pulldown not allowing incremental weights. It would be great to have a body fat / measurement machine like that available in Hereford and it’s a shame the centre is not open on weekend afternoons”

“Staff are always helpful and friendly be it on reception, in the pool or in the Cafe. They go above and beyond for their customers in Aberfan, it’s fantastic. The only down side, is the strong smell of urine in the changing rooms, I think the shower curtains could be removed as that’s what seems to be smelling.”

“Awesome staff. But awful upkeep. Broken and dangerous gym equipment. A floor with huge sunken patches, sides falling off boxes, wobbly benches, a health suite with broken jacuzzi and steam room, filthy changing rooms downstairs where noone (not even staff) take shoes off. They also recently cancelled lots of evening swims without replacement. The slides are back on though, so that's a plus.”

“The centre is vital too many, it offers a fantastic wide area of facilities to suit young and old, or in my case aged. The facilities are 5*, in particular the gymnasium which having enjoyed a recent upgrade and introduction of new and new styled equipment. There is something for everyone, whether it's the upper floor gymnasium or downstairs Pilates or even the wonderfully maintained swimming pool. Their whole centre is kept pristine and overall cared for by wonderful friendly staff of which it would be unfair to separate as individuals. Well done everyone, members appreciate your efforts.”

“I love training in Rhydycar the gym assistants are amazing and i could not do it with out them! They are very caring and supportive and look after you! A gym needs assistance from PTS for people like me who has no idea what I’m doing? I would not go to any other gym! I hope they don’t leave x”
