About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

The gym is great and the yoga class I attend is perfect. However, there are very few classes after 5pm which is disappointing. In fact, there is only 1 yoga class all week - day or evening. It's also difficult to know the exercise ability needed for the classes as there is no description of them.

Classes: Cathy the Pilates instructor and Teresa the yoga teacher are both excellent. Both are hugely knowledgeable and give clear instructions aimed at getting the best from exercise without injury. There are however classes held by other instructors that I avoid because their own form when demonstrating the moves is so horrendous that injury will surely follow. Gym: The gym equipment is often broken or out of use so I haven’t been in the gym for a while. Pool: Mo taught me to swim last year and she is another truly excellent teacher. I regrettably had to give up lessons after suffering a sinus infection so bad that it went to my chest. That was in March and I am still on steroids for the damage left in my eustachion tube. The lockers in the pool area don’t work and there are people who think it’s ok for their children to wee on the floor in the changing area. The smell was sometimes so bad that it made me retch. I know the team are doing their best with limited resources to try to keep the pool clean, but I just can’t face it. Racket sports: I really enjoy the availability of badminton courts but find it a bit expensive considering I already pay membership and bring my own racket & shuttlecocks. Changing rooms: The ladies’ changing area usually smells of sewage so i try to avoid it. Presumably this is a problem with the pipes not being wide enough or angled enough to handle the volume of use, and the showers likely drain into the toilet waste so perhaps the valve designed to keep the odours downstream is broken.

My daughter started swimming lessons and we noticed the pool temperature is too low as the outside temperatures are dropping. What do you do over the winter months ? Will the pool temperature increase?

The availability of lane swims at Pontypool has been severely reduced by Halo. On multiple occasions, half of the lane swim area has been occupied by staff training or children’s lessons. For example, on Wednesdays, only two lanes are left for lane swimming, making it extremely cramped. This limitation is not communicated when booking, which is misleading and frustrating. This is particularly terrible for people who suffer with mental health, as lane swim used to provide a relaxing environment, which is now impossible when lanes are so cramped. It is also very difficult for people recovering from surgery, and with only two lanes available, the lanes aren’t split into fast and slow swimmers, which isn’t stated beforehand. It’s also unsafe for people training for events to use public swim when lanes are crowded or people are jumping around, and you cannot swim appropriately with more than 2–3 people per lane. To make matters worse, tonight (18 September), I received a phone call at 19:43 from a number displaying as “Newport, Wales” regarding the 20:00 lane swim I was booked onto. As I was driving from Cwmbrân, I could not answer the call, and it was unclear that it related to Pontypool. Upon arrival, I was informed that Torfaen Dolphins had booked all lanes. This situation could and should have been communicated well in advance to avoid unnecessary travel and inconvenience. As a paying member, I expect access to the facilities and services advertised. With Fairwater closed since summer and remaining closed until January, these issues are even more impactful. The repeated disruption, lack of communication, and failure to accommodate members’ needs have prevented me from using the centre as intended and caused significant inconvenience.

Pontypool park leisure centre - Would give 0 if I could and I don’t even know where to start. Paying a membership where half the equipment doesn’t work in the spa side of things, the steam room and jacuzzi hasn’t been working for months and the sauna is absolutely disgusting! No hygine whatsoever and it just always stinks. Actually had another member start cleaning it himself as the smell was horrific and the staff had it out with him! He made it clear he wouldn’t have to clean it if the staff did themselves. Just to add there is a water fountain which hasn’t actually worked for years so can’t even refill a drink .Online there will be classes which you can book in and you turn up and they tell you it’s cancelled? Turned up for a lane swim at 8pm and it’s cancelled. Nothing online and you can even still book. On Wednesdays the Torfaen dolphins use half of the strength and conditioning gym and then close it off to the rest of the paying members for the full hour they’re in the gym during the peak hours of 5:30 - 6:30 cause chaos in the other gym.

Great staff, just a shame some new weight equipment is not being introduced to the gym. Been a member now for 10+ yrs and still using the same equipment , need some more up to date weight machines introduced.

Halo is great and has all the equipment you could need, only recommendation is a member of staff in the gym more for any issue or questions. Also for the gym bros to stop dropping the heavy weights and making me jump out my skin haha.

Thank you for your great feedback! We’re thrilled to hear that you’re enjoying the equipment at Halo. We appreciate your suggestion about having a staff member present more often; it's always good to have support on hand. And we’ll definitely remind the gym bros to be a bit more mindful with the weights to keep things calm! Best wishes, Team Halo

I am a regular user of both fitness gyms at Pontypool and would like to express my grave concerns about the very poor and dangerous floor conditions in certain areas of the gym floors, especially in the main gym where the dumbbells and benches are located. The area has been getting progressively worse over the past months to where I now believe to be a very serious health and safety issue

An excellent gym, bright, airy and exceptionally clean. Has a good selection of aerobic and weight training machines and free weights. Really friendly atmosphere with a good mix of men, women, older and younger members. The staff are really approachable and always willing to help and offer advice.

Firstly I want to commend the staff at PALC particularly reception staff and your gym instructors. Without them I and several others would have cancelled out memberships Unfortunately I am disappointed in the overall cleanliness of the centre. The group exercise room is dusty and dirty. The strength and conditioning gym often has equipment left lying around and the holes in the floor are a trip hazard. My biggest concern remains around the poor organisation and management of the group exercise classes. Many are left uncovered when instructors are on leave or long term sick but are not removed from the app so are available for booking. The WOD class at 07:30am has not been covered on Wednesday morning for several weeks and this week Monday wasn’t covered either. It’s very frustrating when you travel for the class and no one is available it’s also an embarrassment when new members turn up. It doesn’t seem it would be difficult to remove it from the app if no one is available to cover although this is frustrating too as cover should be provided. Also the gym and the classes have people in them who have not booked or aren’t even members as there is no one on reception to check people in. You are losing out, these people are using facilities for free Please can you look at cleanliness ask customers about what classes they want and ensure the group exercise manager actually manages the classes and the app Also as a public body you should have mechanisms in place to allow feedback to be given on paper at the centres
