About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“The centre is a very welcome addition to the town. It is clean today and the staff are always welcoming. However it is clear that the budgets have taken a reduction with the centre starting to look tired and the equipment needing review. A main point I would like to raise is the availability and variation of group exercise which has been dramatically reduced in the evening”

“Ross pool is clean and staff are friendly and efficient. However, on my last visit it was very overcrowded because one lane of the pool was shut without warning. More generally, there is less opportunity to swim than in previous years because the pool is only open for a limited number of time-restricted slots per day, reducing flexibility and spontaneity. It feels quite bureaucratic.”

Good Morning, Thank you for you recent review. We apologise about the one lane being closed, we had unplanned emergency maintenance that needed to be actioned. We are committed to utilising the pool as much as possible, We run swim schools, Swim lessons Aqua aerobics and other activities unfortunately the sessions can be limited to specific time slots. “Good pool for swimming, friendly staff giving a good service but the centre lacks regular maintenance and desperately needs some investment in areas other than the Gym. More broken lockers than useable ones in the male dryside changing area this has been the position for months . Lights on exterior steps broken, a serious health and safety risk of someone falling at night. Quick fixes that could improve your ratings are ignored. Poor quality of cleaning in changing areas. Finally how about fixing the Spa and reopening it ! Such a lost opportunity for the centre so many people miss this facility yet you fail to investment in this centre which is a shadow of its former vibrant past. To much emphasis on its financial position by Halo instead of reinstating the former valued facilities by its customers.”

Dear Clive, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback on Halo! We truly appreciate your kind words regarding the staff and our service. Some new lockers have been purchased, we are just waiting for one of our technical team to fit them and use parts from other lockers to help keep a few more in good working order. Further investment on lockers is expected later in the year. We also recognise that some maintenance issues are outstanding and with an aging building these issues are increasing. We have a small maintenance team that cover all 20+ halo sites so sometimes the smaller jobs are overlooked by something more critical at another centre. It is disappointing to read your view of poor cleanliness in changing rooms as this is an area we have looked to improve on recently with a revised cleaning contract and reviewed internal cleaning regimes. Please feel free to speak to a member of staff at the time of your visit if you are disatisfied with any area of cleanliness. There are no plans to reinstate the Spa area as the cost to ensure the area is to a required standard is too great. As a company the priority has been to ensure current activities can remain in place under the financial pressures of recent years and to ensure we can keep all halo facilities open and not have to close like so many Leisure Centres and Swiming Pools have had to do recently. “I've been going to this Halo Leisure Centre for over a year now as it's the closest, have previously gone to the Racecourse for racket sports but primarily use the gym in the week here. The gym is quite well stocked with machines and free-weight areas considering it's size. There is equipment such as the Leg Press or machine Pulldown's which I wish was slightly more adjustable or designed slightly differently to be used more effectively. Despite saying this, there is about one of everything you could need along with two adjustable barbells, a smith machine and plates that will go up to 150KG which is plenty for the vast majority of people. They have recently added another cable machine which I use for the majority of my time on certain days, which is a welcome addition. I'd previously had issues with signing in after booking a gym slot using the Scan & Go feature on the app, either at the entrance or to get through the gym door. This seems to have been fixed within the last few months and have had no issues with this. I think the only reasons why I can't give a 5 star rating apart from the above is the lack of free parking which the Racecourse Halo offers. This is understandable with it's location, though if you are going to the gym before 8am, this isn't going to be an issue as the car park isn't ticketed at this time. Overall, very happy with the gym facilities and staff that run it!”
