About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“Small community gym with friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. New equipment recently has really improved the facilities. What I prize above all is the “no judgement” atmosphere that pervades. All ages and abilities are welcome and everyone is courteous to everyone else.”

“Staff are fantastic, always willing to help and are welcoming. The facilities are in dire need of some repairs, and paint in places such as the outside of the indoor hall, and especially the tennis courts which are deteriorating rapidly in places.”

“I use the Centre several times a week for Swim for Fitness sessions. The Centre is very well run and the facilities are always clean. All the staff are great - friendly and efficient. A really good team. My only suggestion would be for the lifeguards to be a little less passive when it comes to moving swimmers to the correct lane for their speed - there are a few participants who think they belong in the fast lane but clearly don't! That said, sometimes when all the lanes busy there is little room for manoeuvre, and I do understand that.”

We try to rely on people's self awareness to judge which lane to swim in.... we understand the frustration when this is not engaged! “I attend the Bromyard Centre with my wife. I have been a member since 2022 and I use the centre exclusively for organised group classes. In my case I was advised to begin taking Pilates style classes to improve my core strength and posture as one aspect of managing the migraine headaches I suffered from at the time. I enjoyed the body balance classes I attended and shortly afterwards I began to attend other classes such as the static cycling, kettlebell, boxing and weight training. I do not consider myself to be anything like a “gym bunny”. I do not believe that I possess the necessary self discipline and drive to use the gym, but I have continued to attend classes for just over two years now and this is due to the staff at the centre. Marcus, the centre manager is quite simply an inspiration. He engages with people in the class, he knows everyone by name and he notices improvement and gives feedback. I have noticed that he treats his staff in a similar manner and from conversations with other trainers and reception staff, they think the world of him. There was quite a sombre mood at the centre last autumn when he announced that he may leave. Thankfully that did not happen and as a consequence his classes are almost always full with waiting lists on many classes. I have benefitted greatly from attending the classes and although the equipment isn’t the best quality the service provided by the staff makes up for any deficiency in not having brand new kit”

“I reported a problem with the hoist and changing table in the disabled changing room over 2 years ago and it still hasn't been fixed. Staffing levels are low so staff are unable to help as much as they could. The building needs some TLC.”

“The centre itself is lovely with friendly staff but there are a couple of things I don't like. The classes especially yoga and pilates are totally overbooked and I only could join the waiting list to sometimes get a class. But you have to react quickly as there are also plenty of other people on the waiting list. In a few months of membership I couldn't even once book it when I wanted to. And the other thing is that the pool shuts Saturday lunchtime, the weekends would be my best time to go as I work long hours under the week. Sadly I have now terminated my membership.”

“Centre is very useful and has many features however I do feel that the cleanliness of the Spa facility’s are awful. Despite saying they are cleaned daily they quite clearly are not. I also dislike the fact members need to book to use facilities. We should be able to use what we like, when we like as we do pay for the use of all facilities on a monthly basis.”
