About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“Large, fairly well equipped gym. Sports hall is good. Pool isn’t great for swimming, more of a fun pool but slide is only operational for approx 10 mins per session which is disappointing.”

“Disappointing that classes have stopped running and no low impact alternatives have been offered. TRX on Wednesday evening and Saturday morning have gone. Also Thursday evening Body Sculpt class has gone. Also I think you could move the Yoga and Tai Chi to any other evening and a lot more people would come. The choice of classes has definitely deteriorated over the last 3 years.”

“Too much emphasis on getting children to use the gym facilities during school holidays,when they don’t know how to use the equipment and basically use it as a social gathering. This is then detrimental to members who are trying to train correctly and can’t access the equipment due to the numbers of children in the gym. There is also always equipment that needs attention. However the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and outwith the school holidays it is a good place to work out”

“The pool is .much cleaner ....the staff need to be more friendly towards the swimmers...many times I go to wave and say thank you for a lovely swim ...the younger lads seem to be in a world of there own .......maybe they just need a bit more awareness that the swimmers are there........I always enjoy the swimming....kind regards......Angie...”

“Don't understand the booking system, book and so many spaces available, get to gym and its overcrowded, and can't work out properly. Seems people are allowed to just turn up as they please, which spoils experience”

We're sorry to hear that the booking system hasn’t met your expectations and that you found the gym overcrowded during your visit. For example, on Mondays, we run a GP clinic which isn't a bookable session on the app, so these numbers aren't reflected in the space allocated on the halo app. It may feel a lot busier during this time, but our maximum occupancy isn't over-subscribed. “Generally these centres are great for convenience but otherwise they feel understaffed and it shows in the capacity of the teams to perform simple cleaning rounds, prevent or remove people doing anti-social behaviour and at time fail to turn up for shifs in the morning preventing people from accessing the faciliies they've paid for. Pencoed is especially annoying that the regular staff do not open the desk to check in and frustrates all the swimmers who expect to be in the water at 7am on weekdays and 7.15am on weekends only opening the desk at those times eating into the session time before work or the strict weekend 1hr time limits. When cover staff work at Pencoed the desk opens early and everyone is in a better mood able to utilise the actual booked start time of the sessions. So it is possible.”

“Took my grandsons to the intensive swimming lessons course at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre. The swimming instructor, Christopher, was very professional. They were both very nervous but he put them both at ease and gave them confidence and clear instructions and they were clearly enjoying themselves by the end of the first lesson. By the end of the fourth lesson they were both confident in the pool with the foundation to build on their swimming skills. I can highly recommend Christopher to teach swimming to children of all ages.”

“Helpful staff, excellent classes for over 50s. Improvements needed in start time of classes. Moving 11.00 classes forward would be acceptable to.most people & improve parking. After 12.30 plenty of space.”

“My child took part in the summer holiday intensive swimming lessons at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre, and I’m honestly blown away by the progress in just one week. They went from barely managing 5m front crawl and breaststroke to confidently swimming 25m front crawl and 10m breaststroke to the Swim Wales stroke standard. 💪🏊‍♂️ Massive shoutout to Chris – he was absolutely fantastic. So patient, encouraging, and clear with instructions every step of the way. The difference in my child’s swimming (and confidence!) says it all. Highly recommend these lessons – definitely a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ experience!”
