“Below are 3 teacher's and TA's perspectives. We as a school had dedicated the event to an RE day also to try and make the Dance input from Jess as impactful as possible. We were disappointed that Jess wasn't in bright colours or perhaps was able to showcase some dress from a Hindu perspective- especially as we had asked the whole school to wear mufti of a bright colour to reflect the Festival of Lights. I thought it was great today! The children loved it and it embedded what we'd learnt in class about Diwali It would have been good if the work shop lead had been dressed up too in a colourful leotard or some such. The children understood the story as it was told in a way they understood. Most of our little ones tried really hard to follow the moves ,some of our boys were getting bored by the end,but all enjoyed themselves and had great fun Workshop was excellent all the children engaged and it was very age appropriate”

“The representative from West End in Schools was a skilled dancer, who was full of energy and enthusiasm. Throughout the day Clara smiled and encouraged our children to really express themselves. Each workshop was broken down into small achievable dance moves, which Clara skillfully managed into a successful mini-dance production. Our only point for future development would be regarding the initial assembly presentation. The assembly lacked sufficient detail regarding Diwali; instead showing a wide variety of dance moves. It was also much shorter (only 15 mins) than we had been told (30 mins).”

“We had a fantastic day doing the Diwali Dance workshop with Amy. The children were really engaged and loved every minute of it. The activities were just right for each age group from Year R to Year 6 and the staff were really impressed with the way she held the children's attention and made sure the children were active all the way through. Just the right balance of learning "new moves " but with freedom to try out their own ideas.”

“A super event at our school. The children absolutely loved the workshop which was led brilliantly. They were engaged and focused throughout and learned a lot about Diwali and Indian dance. The only improvement would have been the leader wearing traditional Indian dress. I would highly recommend West End Schools.”

“I was very impressed with how Craig led the workshops. The children were totally engaged and active yet factual information was also incorporated and developed. Children as young as 5 were included and able to access the learning at an appropriate level. The final assembly to share classes work was a fantastic way to draw all of the day together. Video footage, sound effects and poetry gave an added dimension. Time for reflection included at the end gave a poignant reminder of the events of 100 years ago. We would certainly use West End in Schools again.”

“An excellent session! Worked perfectly as an introduction to our new unit of work on India. The children all engaged really well with the dancing and the instructor was clear and built up the moves really well, so that all children could access the workshop. They thoroughly enjoyed it and it has given us a great starting point for future dance lessons. One child said, "That was definitely the best visitor we've had!"”

“Our instructor was great however, as a school, we were expecting props or even some examples of traditional dress for Hindus celebrating Diwali. Most children were engaged with learning and I just feel that having that extra visual would have truly gripped them. It felt like a high quality P.E. lesson rather than a Diwali dance experience.”

“Poetry and Poppies workshop It is rare to find workshop providers that are able to deliver on the same theme across the whole of the primary phase to equal effect in all year groups. The provider handled a sensitive topic with great thought and consideration to the ages of the children he was working with. Some feedback from staff include: ‘Pitched just right and a good variety of techniques used to enhance the performance.’ ‘Great delivery and engaging for all year groups.’ ‘Lovely involvement & progression for all age groups’ A fantastic launch to our week of ‘thankfulness’ - we would definitely consider having West End in Schools come x d work with us again.”

“Really fun dances. Pace was a bit brisk so some of my class ,Year 1, couldn't,t keep up. Maybe couple less dances would have made it easier. Thoroughly enjoyed it though! The children in Year 6 loved the different country dances and were extremely engaged by them. excellent guidance given for all to participate.”

“I can honestly say that the 'Dance around the World' has been the best workshop we've ever organised. West End in Schools were really flexible and tailored to our needs so we had a fantastic dance assembly and six workshops, one for each class (years 1-3). Ashley was really inspiring to the children (especially to the boys who at the start of the day were determined to hate dancing) but ended up LOVING it. He was an incredible performer and really approachable and friendly. Thanks a million - it was brilliant.”

“We had the pleasure of experiencing the Fairytale Drama Workshop for our Year 4s (who are doing traditional tales in literacy). The facilitator, Abby, was outstanding - lively, professional and enthusiastic. The workshop was brilliant, it encouraged the children to explore the tales in detail by recreating still images about the characters and the environment of the tale, by 'becoming' the characters and interacting with other characters. All the children were thoroughly engaged and absolutely loved every single moment. I especially liked the last part of the session where the children were questioned about the 'ethics' behind the story eg: was Jack (in the Jack and the Beanstalk) a hero or a villain? Should he go to prison for stealing from the Giant etc. I would recommend this workshop for any year group between year 3 and 6. We shall definitely be inviting West End in Schools again in the near future.”
