Overall, the booking process was good. Everyone I dealt with in the office was friendly, helpful and organised, and everything was arranged really well. It's a shame that my experience with the trainer didn't reflect the same high standard. Andrew was clearly knowledgeable, experienced and appropriately qualified to deliver the training. Unfortunately, I found his communication style quite difficult at times. His mood seemed very changeable, one minute he was friendly, relaxed and joking with the group, and the next he became defensive, abrupt and came across as very easily frustrated. There was one particular interaction that left me feeling quite uncomfortable. I asked a question about whether, if a defibrillator was immediately available, it should be used before starting CPR. He didn't seem to understand exactly what I was asking, so I tried to rephrase it a couple of times. Rather than trying to clarify what I meant, he responded defensively, saying that he had already answered my question three times and that he didn't understand what I wasn't getting. I found that response quite rude and very unprofessional. I wasn't questioning his knowledge, I was trying to make sure I fully understood something that could one day be the difference between life and death. If I didn't feel my question had been answered, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask it another way in the hope of getting the clarification. Thankfully, another participant stepped in and said, "I think what she's trying to ask is..." She explained my question exactly as I had intended it, showing that it was a perfectly valid question and that someone else had understood what I was trying to ask. I appreciated her stepping in, but it was disappointing that the situation had reached that point, I think Andrew needs to reflect on how he comes across and how quickly he can get frustrated. Surely creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable to ask questions is essential on a course like this. After that interaction, I felt reluctant to ask any more questions because I was worried I would be spoken to in the same way again. I don't think that's how anyone should feel during first aid training. This is life saving training, and learners should feel comfortable asking questions until they fully understand the answer. Feeling unable to ask for clarification because you're worried about the response defeats the purpose of the course, especially considering the school have spent such a lot of money on this course. Overall, I would use this company again because the organisation and customer service from the office staff was great, and everyone else I dealt with was lovely so it’s a real shame. However, I would ask for a different trainer in future. Andrew is clearly knowledgeable, but I think a calmer and more approachable teaching style would make for a much better learning experience (hence the three stars, sorry!)
