“Started this claim around October 2020 and I’m still waiting for my cheque. Have been told is for about £70 (amount is irrelevant) and that the cheque has been sent out and cashed! Not by me it hasn’t! Have never seen the cheque. TRC say it sits wit HMRC, if I ever get my £70 (about 35 after their cut) it will go to Lincs Notts Air Ambulance. What a complete farce this has turned out to be. In my experience, DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMENDED!”

Hi Ian, this is very unusual. The normal process is that we submit a claim to HMRC and then HMRC would issue a refund directly to us where we would take our fee and then forward the balance to the client - similar to what a solicitor does during a property purchase. It's normally pretty straightforward, we have made literally thousands of successful claims for customers in this same manner for more than 25 years. Looking at the notes on the case I can see HMRC initially told us that the refund had been made payable to you and sent directly to you in error (this sometimes happens) but as you said you had not received it, they told us they were going to correct their error by cancelling the first cheque and re-issuing a new one to us (as is the usual process). This didn't happen. I can see that we were then informed that they were going to transfer the refund to us electronically. Again this didn't happen. After chasing them again to find out why, they told us that the matter is being investigated by their compliance team as they can see that the original refund cheque, which they sent directly to you last year, is showing as having been cashed on the 20th May 2021. It may well be worth double-checking your bank account for last May to see if the cheque has gone in, it was a fair while ago and it's easy to forget these things sometimes. If it definitely hasn't been paid in then it sounds like some sort of fraud/theft may have been committed and you would need to get the police involved. We will chase up HMRC again to see what progress has been made at their end and will let you know. Kind regards.
