Hi Kevin Sorry to hear you're unhappy with our fee structure regarding your refund, but that's not everything you will be receiving from HMRC. In cases where a refund ends up being less than £100 we charge our minimum fee to cover our costs which, as you've quite rightly stated, is £38. We work on a no win no fee basis and feel this is a very fair price given the level of expertise and work involved in completing a full review of any client's tax situation and ensuring any errors are then corrected with HMRC. The same service via an accountant would have cost you far more, regardless of whether you had received a refund or not. (Incidentally, our fee structure is clearly laid out in all of our marketing material so that all of our customers are aware of it before they apply) However, although we only take our fee from the initial refund, that's not the only part of the service. As well as the initial refund you have now received you should also now see that your tax code has been changed. This means that you will be paying less tax every month than you were previously, saving you more and more money as time goes on. Not bad for a one off fee of £38. Hope that makes sense, thanks for using our service.

I did a roughly 35 hours overtime every month for the past year and just wanted to check to see if it added up correctly so I decided to try the tax refund company. It was fairly straight forward and once completed I heard nothing back for 2 months. Next notification I get is from the gov website and not this company. so I log into my gov gateway and the website said I’ve overpaid approx £40 and that they will be sending payment to the tax refund company. Thinking to myself £40 isn’t to bad and every little helps these days so I was quite pleased. Now I know these company’s don’t work for free so I was expecting them to take something for their troubles. but I did think that being a small amount I wasn’t expecting them to take much. I received a cheque today for £4.77 which Is a little more than 10% of my refund. Moral of the story if your place of work is accurate with their taxes you don’t need this. You’re better off not knowing because it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth knowing that they’ve taken your money to pay themselves. It will cost as much as my refund to get to the bank to deposit it so don’t waste your time.

Hi Shaun, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Although your review isn't exactly glowing it does give us the opportunity to address some of the points you have raised and let you know about something that happens as part of our service that it seems you are not aware of. Firstly we work on a no win no fee basis and take on all our clients in good faith not knowing for sure if a refund is definitely due at the point that they first apply, a lot of the work we carry out is completely free of charge. Our fee structure is clearly outlined in all of our marketing material (which I can see from our system that you have responded to) is also clearly laid out on our website (there's even a short video explaining how they work) and is included in our terms and conditions which every customer agrees to when they sign up for our service. As your refund was only small you have fallen into the category where we charge our minimum fee of just £38 for a full review of your tax situation. This is excellent value when you consider that had you gone to an accountant for the same service it would likely have cost you a few hundred pounds and you would have been charged this regardless of whether you had received a refund or not. The part that lots of customers miss or forget about is that our service not only involves the initial refund but also, in most cases, their tax code will now have been changed. As a result they will be paying less tax from the point of receiving their refund onwards, meaning the service they have received from us becomes better and better value as time goes on, all included in the price of our initial fee which in your case was just £38. You state the moral of the story is that if your workplace is accurate with your taxes then you don't need this service. This is a common misconception and one of the reasons we get so many people so many refunds. It is not the responsibility of anyone's employer to know what their employee's personal tax situation is, in most cases they simply operate the tax code passed on from the previous employer or a code given to them by HMRC. It's the responsibility of the employee and there lies the problem as most people have no idea how a tax code works and whether they're on the right one so need an expert to help them. Perhaps the moral of the story should be to never assume your employer has put you on the correct tax code and always use an expert, but make sure you pay full attention to how their fees work and exactly what service you're getting for your money. Kind regards

Took 8 months to get a simple refund then lost over half of it in commission, do it yourself this is a total rip off

Hi Melanie, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review - part of what you're saying is correct but part of it simply isn't and part of it is slightly confusing. Let's start with the correct part - HMRC has indeed been taking a much longer time than usual to process tax refunds. This is due to the staff who normally process refunds being switched over to deal with processing the government's furlough scheme to help the country through the pandemic. Unfortunately, as they had no extra resources available something had to give and in this case tax refunds had to take a backseat in favour of the millions of furlough claims being made each month. I am pleased to say that now that the furlough scheme has ended, staff have been moved back over to processing refunds and they are making great strides to get back up to date - hence you receiving your refund. OK, now for the part that isn't correct - you say you lost over half of your refund in commission, I've checked the details and you simply didn't, not even close. We work on a no win no fee basis. The only time that a client may end up being charged more than half of their refund is if the refund amount ended up being so small that we had to charge our minimum fee of £38. This in itself is excellent value for the service we offer. The same service from an accountant would have cost you a few hundred pounds, and that would be charged whether you receive a refund or not. And finally the confusing part - you advise people to do this themselves as we are a total rip-off, yet this is the 2nd time you have used our service and it's the 2nd time that we've been successful in getting you a refund - the 2nd refund being bigger than the first refund back in 2019. Our fees have not changed since you last applied, so why would you have used a service for a second time when you felt that it was a rip-off? Kind regards.

My first refund of just over £902 was a very good surprise. I was informed at the time of informing you of the amount, that a request was made to HMRC to recover over payment for the year April 2019 to April 2020. I have heard nothing since. Ronald Stanford
