“The course (I took the 120 hour version) contains a great deal of valuable information. There are several points that might be considered in future versions: 1) in the grammar section, I believe the passive voice needs to be included. 2) in the phonology section, use of the phonemic symbols could be helpful, but there wasn't enough effort made to teach them or refer to places where we could learn them. Should we be teaching this alphabet to students? Unless, they are really linguistically inclined, I question the value of doing so. 3) a great deal of focus is placed on planning lessons. But I believe it would be quite useful to talk about the materials one is likely to encounter as a TEFL teacher. How do you plan lessons in the context of textbooks or other materials that may typically already be in use at the school? It seems to me that most schools will have developed a curriculum for teaching English and we would be expected to work within that framework. 4) I believe it would be useful to make weekly calls with the tutor a part of the course. 5) while no one likes to be bored, I found the constant emphasis on making lessons "fun" to be misplaced. Every effort should be made to engage the students, but I believe it is as important to focus on the motivation necessary to get students through those parts of the language such as learning irregular verbs which are unlikely to be fun. 6) I think it might be useful to include a two or three hour discussion or seminar on first steps towards finding a job as a part of the overall course.”

“The TEFL Org have created a good learning site with videos, quizzes and assignments online. It is a good way of trying something else alongside other jobs, to start and create something new for the future. The tutors could improve their way of feedback as I often felt mine was writing off a already written text, not replying to my questions nor giving me constructive feedback on how to improve.”

“The overall course is well organized and some of the techniques seemed really helpful for teaching English in a newer and much easier way than traditional grammar courses. However, I think there may be a few issues with your some of the contents e.g. lesson videos, scripts and also assignment questions and answer requirements. Sometimes students’ voice or accent is not clear and also there is text missing in the scripts. There are assignment questions which are not clear on what they are asking for (e.g. In US Video Observation Course, unit 4 assignment, you are asking for specific information activity based on 10 reading comprehension questions but neither it is specifically mentioned in assignment question nor all of those questions students had in their hands were shown properly in the video or script). Moreover, I feel that the requirements of word limit are quite challenging for the type of answers expected. So, in my opinion, perhaps these things need to be updated for a better outcome from students. Lastly, this course may not be helpful for seeking jobs overseas, especially for those whose native language is not English (almost 95% companies offering jobs impose that strict criteria) therefore, this point could be highlighted in course description.”

“I think the lessons were clear and well-informed. As a secondary English school teacher in the UK, I found the course especially helpful for revisiting grammar topics which I was able to teach to some of my own classes. I found it helpful that the course provided specific areas of teaching that I may not have considered e.g. teaching to large groups or online. However, I will say the reference to visual/kinesthetic learning was wholly inaccurate and outdated. Please revisit this topic using recent journals about how learners learn. As well-intentioned as it may sound, there is no such thing as an 'auditory' learner or any of the other senses because students use all their senses.”

“Overall I thought it was well laid-out. My feedback is that for the video segments, sometimes I found it distracting that the speakers were clearly reading off a teleprompter and they made it far too obvious. Also on the whole, all of the video classroom demonstrations were of a very high level of english language learners. In practice, the teaching I've done to language learners has been to speakers that are far more beginner. This rendered a lot of the TEFL activities challenging for me to replicate and I wish there was more content on how to communicate in VERY simple English to increase learners' chances at understanding. For reference, I'm currently teaching in Japan, and I have to use a lot of Japanese in the classroom to run games because otherwise the other teacher and the students won't know what's happening.”
