All in all a useful course and a very useful and recognized certificate. With some blind spots. (Which we all have. It’s okay. Really.) The TEFL Method is a rigid ESL structure that takes itself very seriously. There is no room in its dogma to admit or consider any other way of teaching English. As one winds their way through the course one is forced to be guided by TEFL’s inflexible rules, tediously and tirelessly laid out by the curriculum and reinforced by the Instructors and TAs. I found the homework feedback given to me by my TA Steve to be off putting and negative from the start, and after the first two assignments I stopped reading his responses altogether. (He began his second feedback to me thusly: “Do not do what you have written here”, which although admittedly has a certain amount of blunt humor, is unhelpful.) It was enough to know I passed the assignments and simply move on, without taking the time to read his feedback and take my lashes. He may have had some fantastic ideas from which I would have benefitted greatly. I wouldn’t know. The classroom videos of the course are excellent and illuminating. I enjoyed them and collected some good ideas. The website is buggy, but mostly functional. I often had to go back to a lesson and pretend to do it again for the Course to update it and mark it as completed. Upon completing a lesson, instead of moving me forward to the next lesson, the website would at times seem to freeze before taking me back to the main page of module, where I had to scroll down and find my correct lesson. A bit annoying. I am giving the 140-hour TEFL course 3/5 stars, because I did enjoy the material, whose subject matter (learning and teaching languages) I am passionate about. I did learn a lot. I just wish TEFL was more receptive to other ideas. For all its worthy insistence on Student Teaching Time, it felt like I was being preached at for 140 hours, including the 20-hour live module on Zoom, where questions were brushed aside, probably—and fairly—due to time constraints, and including my TA, who made it clear from the start that my class planning was to include only those ideas blessed in TEFL holy water. The TEFL Method is not so precious. There are many ways to learn a second language. There are as many ways to teach a second language. Humans learn things. It’s what we do. Alas, if you want the blessing of a recognized and renowned certification, you must enter the Church and take your lashes. Be sure to leave your own ideas and experiences at the Door.

The course was interesting and covered alot. I must be honest though, and say that the videos of classes were not very realistic. About 8 people in a class and all spoke pretty good English already not sure exactly what level they were. This did not help me much when it came to writing lesson plans for pre intermediate and intermediate. Also the Methodology video was about 'Clothes' ...easy right ? but it didn't help me at all to write a lesson plan for Past Continuous Interrupted for that module 😕!!! I teach 3hour long classes for Pre and Entry 1 with over 10 in most groups. The feedback is very limited but having said that they do get back within the 48hours. I'm guessing it's the best around but has a few areas for development .

The lessons were clear and useful. However, within the modules there were some spelling mistakes in the text, which was very unprofessional, you would think there would be proofreaders. In some of the video lessons the audio is extremely quiet and hard to hear. The transcriptions of the videos aren't actually transcriptions except for in the Telephone Teaching Course. The transcriptions are a sentence saying what the video is of, not the words spoken. The combination of the lack of transcription and bad audio made some of the videos incomprehensible to me. The courses themselves did teach a lot about how to teach English and the necessary preparations for classes.

I found it quite tedious as I had to repeat some assignments more than 5 times with different feedback each time.

1. Time to redo "telephone class". No one teaches over the phone anymore. I've been using PPP structure in zoom classes for years now and it works very well. It's obvious that this unit is rooted in the previous century and please don't teach Skype and other technologies (looks like product placement). 2. add comments to the videos so we know what is going on in the class (things like: eliciting, PPP - concept testing, etc. 3. The eight steps of a full PPP class are presented in Unit 12, module 2. Language Review is part of a full PPP class in this model. Not only it is listed as a step (see below the steps I copied from your online material) but also in the video corresponding to this step the teacher says: “So just to finish off, I want to see what you can remember from the lesson about the new words that we've learned. So can anyone remember the pattern, or the word he used to describe this design?” But when I did the assignment I got feedback telling me that Language Review is not part of a PPP class and more importantly why it is not included in the task? Lead-in (setting the context) Presentation - Eliciting the TL Presentation - Concept checking Presentation - Drilling Presentation - Board work Practice Production Language review 4. The course content is confusing for the following reason: In Unit 12, module 2 Concept Checking is set to be the first part of the Presentation and it is clearly explained to be an attempt to check how much of a target language the students already know. "Concept checking questions" are not explained or introduced anywhere in the course but they appear in the final written task and are expected to be employed at the end of the presentation. The objective here is to check how well the students have grasped the TL through the presentation. To make it less confusing the concept questions should be introduced and explained in the course body and it should be made clear that there are two separate occasions on which a teacher checks the grasp of the concept. 5. Video observation course is a complete waste of time. The bad class is bad acting and the quizzes can be done without even watching the videos as the answers are so obvious. One possible way to improve this would be to get rid of the bad class videos and add comments to the good class ones. Comments should be about what the teacher is doing so one could identify activities/stages.

Thank you for your review, Tomasz. We certainly appreciate your detailed feedback. We are still finding many people around the world don't have easy access to the internet or still use Skype etc. We try to make sure that our courses cover this so that teachers have the tools to provide English lessons to everyone, no matter where they are in the world. We usually receive excellent reviews about our video observation course, which is especially enjoyed by new teachers, so this will certainly remain within our course content. You can be sure that I will pass on your feedback to our team though, as we will always look to improve our courses further. Thanks again, Tomasz

I just finished the 120-hour course with a virtual weekend class, and the virtual weekend class was by far the best part of the experience. I haven't taken any other TEFL certificates to compare this to, but the course materials are unnecessarily long-winded, occasionally contradictory, and scattered with typos. Assignments were confusingly laid out. I felt like I was fighting against the course structure sometimes. They package up short modules like Business English and Large Classes into the larger certificate, but these contain almost no useful information (certainly nothing you can't find from free resources). I wish I hadn't had to sign up for these to get the certificate. The Grammar and Methodology (and some of the Video Observation) modules have a lot of information, albeit laid out in a way that can be hard to take notes from, but I would mostly recommend the live course. You get a chance to deliver a lesson, observe others delivering lessons, and then get real-time feedback from a tutor. I did the live course after completing the asynchronous course, which I would recommend doing, as it gave me the chance to implement the teaching methodology I'd learned.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback about The TEFL Org! It's great to hear that you had such a positive experience in our classroom course. Our main courses certainly cover everything a teacher would need to help them step into their first class. We therefore cover many topics, such as teaching large classes, so our teachers can feel prepared in any classroom situation. This also ensures we follow a structure which meets the accreditation criteria. Thank you again for your feedback, and we wish you the very best of luck in your TEFL journey!

The course was fine. I found the course material easy to retain and work through. I had a horrible experience with my tutor. When I read reviews I found similar experiences to mine, so I don't think it is a one off problem. My tutor, Asif, graded assignments very subjectively. The brief for assignments were vague at best, however they gave a specific reuberic for what the assignment needed to have or not have. My tutor would give feedback asking for things the brief specifically said not to include or didn't talk about at all. His feedback was highly specific to his opinion and style of teaching. Which your course says they want individual teachers and are there to enhance unique teaching styles not create teaching robots. I found myself learning things a teacher should and shouldn't do during the course and then having my tutor act contrary to what I was learning. Because so much of his feedback was subjective I had a hard time revising assignments. What looked to me like an appropriate activty for teaching a concept, to him, needed a revision bevause it wasn't what he would do. I got to the point where I just asked him whay he want to lesson plan to look like, bevause unless it was a lesson plan that he would write he wasn't going to pass it. I was not impressed with my tutor and feel like the assignment portion of the course needs stricter rubric that tutors adhere to and only grade from, or the individual tutor needs to design the assignment according to their grading rubic and it needs to be given to the student prior to the assignments. I also wish there was more transparency on the course itself. I am teaching online one-on-one and the course I took almost exclusively focused on in-person large classroom teaching. However, there was nothing to indicate that would be the case prior to selecting this course. There a lot of options out there for telf certification and I would probably choose a different one.

I loved the course itself, the tutor was also helpful. In some cases I was suggested to check the community, but I felt it was not active enough. I needed a teacher to student communication for most of my doubts. Besides this being a non-native speaker, I've found it to be a little bit demoralising in some places. There's no guidance for people like me to move forward, so much prejudice and blocks. But I really intend to work abroad, but I don't know how to move forward. I can't keep buying courses, I need to find some work.

Hi! I recently just purchased the tefl certification course and have not started anything yet. I just keep getting emails to review the course that I completed..but I haven’t. Once I have successfully completed the course I will review. Hopefully more due diligence will me made when identifying who finished the course and who has not.

The course I took was wholly online and self-paced. On one hand this makes learning the methods of TEFL extremely convenient, although without genuine experience of teaching it does feel fundamentally limited in it's usefulness. Furthermore the course is not so much designed to teach as it is designed to present information - actual learning will have to be self-studied. Whilst the information is clearly explained - I never had trouble understanding the content - the course effectively boils down to a set of Youtube tutorials, quizzes (which are difficult to get wrong) and assignments. There is little initiative within the course to integrate, revise and practice what you've learnt, save for the assignments which ask you to produce lesson plans. To really maximise what one recieves from this course, you'll need to revise, self-study and practice elsewhere. Ironically the course does not practice the maxims that it is teaching!! In short, an acceptable course that will teach you TEFL, but not enough to prepare you to be an English teacher.

Hi Rowan, Thank you so much for your feedback on The TEFL Org! We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know what you think of our service. It's great to hear that you've had positive experiences with us. It sounds like you chose one of our online only courses, so perhaps one of our combined courses would have been more suitable, as these include the teaching practices that you mention were missing in your course. Our hands-on teaching sessions grant the opportunity to plan and deliver short lessons, nicely putting into practice, and consolidating the theory studied online. If you ever have any questions regarding this, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Thanks again for your feedback, and all the best with your TEFL career!

Sometimes the quiz doesn't quite seem to follow from the module. I am struggling with the reported speech as there are a few possible answers and I can't seem to grasp exactly which version you want.

It was ok. The written assignments were very poorly explained, and the grading was overly subjective, especially given the poorly defined parameters. If you're going to have highly subjective grading, you need very highly defined expectations, otherwise, it's a really annoying slog of eye-rolling at the grader responses and saying "Well, if that's what you wanted, why didn't you say that?" and "That's your personal opinion!"

Course materials are usually helpful but delivery is inconsistent and feels cobbled together. The tutor support is prompt but there should be the opportunity to communicate with tutor on phone particularly at the beginning. I know the org needs to make money so supply of direct support would need to be rationed but I feel this could be achieved by a token system duty tutor Roster.

I think the overall content is good, with a strong focus on practical situations and applicable knowledge. There are several videos that I think ought to be reviewed, for instance the video on tutoring, sample lesson. The teacher in the video shows little inclination to adapt her tl to the students need. The student states that what she needs is practice speaking, instead the focus of the lesson is on some insultingly basic vocabulary. I also felt that the scope of allowed solutions to the written assignments was too narrow, and that all creativity in writing lesson plans was punished until I settled for writing extremely bland texts.
