Compared hire car excess insurance. Went through the process only discover that when I tried to buy the cheapest ones that the transaction failed. Eventually had to go for a more expensive policy that actually completed. Still massively cheaper than from the hire company, but not as good as their best quoted price.

Hi Philip Thanks for your comments, and for talking to me to discuss your view - its a very unusual one for us to receive! Thanks also for agreeing that I could summarise our findings. There were two factors here - Firstly you are a non UK resident - as that reduces the choice when you run a quote - the insurers find that claims for those based overseas tend to be more costly than those from UK residents and that is reflected in the price. Secondly you were comparing the cost of a policy with full excess cover through MoneyMaxim with an add on which just covered the tyres and glass - so not really a like for like comparison. We are confident the policies we show are highly competitive - if all things are taken into account the price would have been competitive! The MoneyMaxim team

Hi Alan, That is not the way it should work, and we will contact you today to see if we can help here. We can see you visited carhireexcess.com, so assume the problem was with their site, but are not sure what happened there. We were trying to book the cover and got a code from the bank and then the system closed on us. Not acceptable as we could not proceed

Kenneth Hall We are really sorry to hear this. Since the change in the 3DS online payment system in regards to all Card Providers (providing an extra form of security), there does seem to be slightly more declines when using a card. Always check with your card holder provider when this happens or even possibly using a different card, this seems to do the trick ! I ran a comparison of policies to cover the excess on my van hire rental. I clicked through on the best two but both of them quoted a higher price than the one from Moneymaximiser. I went elsewhere

Thanks Paul, both for the review, and for taking my call. As you know we are confused here - as we reran your quote and on clicking out to the insurer from our service on both the top two policies found both prices matched the prices we had quoted to the penny. You don't think you amended anything on reaching the insurer- we can't explain how this could possibly have happened - so all in all we decided between us that we will accept it as an unexplainable glitch and move on. Jargon. Too much. Just need a simple table of what it covers and importantly what it doesn’t. I am not an insurance expert and I couldn’t work out if I was covered for 3rd party liability or not. I had to just buy the “full” insurance from the car hire website at more expense. Using unexplained abbreviations doesn’t help the layman…it feels more like it’s designed to rip off the layman

Anonymous Sadly, in the Car Hire World, terminologies are used across the industry which you as a consumer and us as a comparison site (we are not the Car Hire Company or the Insurers ourselves), have no control over! What we have done though, via the search facility on Moneymaxin, have written several articles in trying to define and provide simplified meanings which can then be understood by all (especially for those people who haven't hired a car before). It is a shame that you didn't call us on 01183218197 option 3, we have a Customer Service Team that would have been delighted to have answered any questions that you may have had and we would have also run a quote for you, tailoring this for your specific needs. All would have been achieved in just minutes. Hopefully next time around. Regarding the features of each policy, these can be found under the details button, which explains the headings, showing all the main areas as to what is covered and not.It also shows the level of cover. re 3rd Party Insurance. I noticed you ran a European Car Hire Excess Insurance quote (which could be purchased on our site for just over £2 a day). When hiring a car in Europe, 99% of the time, 3rd Party insurance automatically comes as standard with your Car Hire, this is because each European country does have a 3rd Party legal requirement. The reason why this isn't mentioned on our site is that it's already provided by the Car Hire Firm and there is no requirement for this. Hence why it's not mentioned or offered via a Car Hire Excess Insurance Policy. I'm sorry to hear how you felt when you were looking into this. I do wish that we were able to speak to you at the time when we would have been delighted to help you and for you to then hopefully share the same experience, that so many of our customers experience, as confirmed by the number of reviews that we receive. I've noticed (at the time of writing)) that there are around 5 days or so until you pick your hire car up and if we can still help you in any way before then or in the future, then we are just a telephone call away. The list of different car insurance suppliers to compare was helpful but the info MM provided about them turned out to be misleading ie one supplier MM listed as providing Primary Cover didn't as I discovered after a very lengthy online chat with them.

This is frustrating as we actually use the wording on our website that is directly copied from the insurers website - so we should not be misleading. I understand, having talked to you further. that you then contacted, as we say you should, the insurer - who failed to give you the subsequent confirmation that you were looking for. I am sorry you were disappointed here - but we can only really tell our users what the insurers are also telling their users on their website and in their policy documents. I understand you did, with a combination of cover from a policy from our site and additional cover from the car hire company get fully covered - which is the important issue. EXTREMELY Long wait on the phone to speak to an advisor, who was NOT very knowledgeable!! Taking out the policy is the easy part, what matters is, how good they are in the event of a Claim?

Thanks Allan for taking the time to explain the circumstances behind your comments. MoneySavingExpert recommends users to use us to compare due to the comprehensive comparison service we offer and the details of policies we provide in one place. We also offer policies at significantly discounted rates. However, MSE also has some separately negotiated deals that can only be used if you visit the insurers directly. You cannot see these prices without visiting each insurance company one by one and checking the resultant quote - in practice, and at different times, some offer similar discounts to those we are offering, some lower or higher. I am sorry that you found the process cumbersome, but that is really outside our control given it is dictated by MSE not us. Disappointed. Looked at European Car hire excess insurance which I've found previously with you - really good policy with World Wide Insure. You were showing a good deal with them but clicked through and the link to their website took me through to more expensive deals and not the one you had advertised...

Hi Virginia, Thanks for your review which we have investigated at length - as we explained when we contacted you whenever we tested the process the Worldwide Insure policy was correctly displayed - and in addition there were no technical issues on either our or Worldwide's at the time you ran your quote that might have impacted this. It is true to say that the company are one of the few on the site who do not have the ability to allow us to deep link you directly to the policy in question, so some reinputting is required and we do wonder if that caused the problem. If you ever have a similar issue in the future please do contract us, as we would have been able to to sort this within a couple of minutes. Many thanks again for letting us know of your concerns as it did give us the chance to do a top to toe review to ensure all is working fine.

Not great. Some of the attributes (e.g. Personal accident cover provided) stated on the Moneymaxim site were not in fact included in the cover when you looked at the insurer's own website. Also the insurer I first went with - the card transaction failed possibly because the name on my credit card didn't match my full name. Many card providers put people's initials on bank cards so the name won't always match exactly.

That is not a word we see often! I wonder if it’s because you asked us for a CDW quote rather than an excess insurance quote? CDW covers the whole value of the car rather than the excess cover which only covers the excess you are responsible for – and for that reason it is more expensive. Hopefully you are sorted now but if you would like us to check any future quotes you run please do let us know.

Well.... we do offer Green Motion cars through our car hire service - alongside many other car rental firms. Have corresponded we understand that you are basing your comments of feedback you have read online rather than any first party experience - and we explained that whilst we continuously monitor our customers experience we have had no expressions of dissatisfaction with Green Motion in over two years - hence the reason they are featured. There are other companies who are not featured because we are not confident that they will care for our users as well as we expect, but we base our decisions on the evidence we see, and therefore unless our users tell us otherwise we will continue to offer the existing panel. I hope that at least explains the situation.

Disappointing that when looking for excess insurance for a hire of a motorhome it was not clear on the website that cover was only available with an annual policy, and was not available as a single trip policy.

Hi and many thanks for your review. We do title this product as an Annual European Excess with £1000 Motorhome Excess Cover but I am sorry if we have not made it clear enough. We did list this policy as being potentially suitable for you as it is actually cheaper that an alternative single trip policy which had a higher excess - and we always look to suggest the best value products for our users whether annual or single trip policies. The company in question do not offer the motorhome upgrade on their single trip policies, although this is something we have suggested to them, so it might happen in the future. Despite entering various data, quotes exclude it. System not at all clear. When clicking through various options I eventually got a price for what I had requested in the first place. Quote was considerably higher than the front page. Will not use again. Had to use the online chat as website too incoherent.

Hi and thank you for your review. We do have a dilemma here - you were looking for a European Car Hire Excess Insurance as a non UK resident. The prices we are supplied with by the most insurers are those that include UK Insurance Premium Tax - whilst if you are to buy from overseas you would pay the IPT at a rate pertinent in the country you live in. Additionally the insurer then charges you in Euros rather than pounds at an internal rate they use. So prices can differ, as we say on the site, for our non UK based users. We are left with two options - Firstly not to show rates for overseas users at all - but that would disappoint the considerable number of users who are happy to accept the situation as above and use our site as it is. Secondly to continue as we are - with the message that says that we are quoting a UK residents price with all that that entails. We have chosen the second route as feedback such as yours is in the minority, so feel we are doing more good than harm - if we felt otherwise we would change our approach immediately. We will however review the wording we use given your feedback though as we work hard to avoid being incoherent. We are glad that in the end you found a policy that met your needs and were able to purchase it. Thanks again for your thoughts.
