“I searched online for the 9w dimmable LED bulbs I especially wanted and was pleased to see that General Lamps had them available to order. However, when they arrived they were rated as 7.5W. The response I received when I queried this was: 'the 7.5 watt version is a replacement for the 9 watt due to the fact that this is the natural successor, as the higher wattage version is now discontinued'. It seems to me therefore not only that the lamps being advertised by General Lamps were not in stock, but were never likely to be re-stocked as they no longer existed. Can companies do this? There was no suggestion of an 'equivalent rating' when I ordered the 9w bulbs. If my electrician is unhappy with 7.5s they're going back.”

Hi Barry, LED is an evolving technology so as the perfmance of LEDs improves the light output increases. Manufacturers then reduce the wattage of their bulbs to ensure that the light level remains the same , hence a 9w bulb becomes a 7.5w bulb. There is no loss of light the bulb will produce exactly the same amount of light but in this case you save 1.5w of power per lamp , meaning even greater savings in electricity whilst maintaining the same light output.
