About Friars.co.uk:

It all started back in 1927 when William Long had the fabulous idea of opening a luxury chocolate shop in the picturesque town of Keswick, in the heart of the Lake District. He probably never dreamed it would still be in the same family nearly 100 years later.

In those early days the shop only opened during the summer months and it is believed William chose to winter in the Madeira sunshine. As you would expect the business has evolved in many ways since then, however certain principles remain since those early days.

Innovation – We were the first to make a prosecco truffle and then shortly after we followed with our fabulous gin truffle. More recently; although Easter eggs are synonymous with Easter, we decided to move away from the main stream and invented our famous hot cross bun truffle.

But all this only scratches the surface; we are also one of the first chocolate makers to start transitioning to 100% biodegrade packagingM as well as pioneering vegan milk and white chocolate...among other things.

Quality – Any new chocolate must meet certain requirements to get past our strict tasting panel. If one of the panel gives a score below 9/10 then we simply won’t offer the chocolate to our customers.

Longevity – We are immensely proud of our historic routes and in this fast moving, ever changing world, we take pride in our tradition and heritage. Our rose and violet creams are the same ones that William sold on that first day of opening, back in 1927. We have survived and prospered over the last 90 years and with the launch of our Ambleside store and an online service, we fully intend to be around for the next 100 years.

After all life is too short, so why settle for ordinary chocolate?

I ordered two boxes of chocolates (8th November) but they send the wrong ones (also different from invoice). They didn't want them returned, but still haven't sent the right ones.

I order about £50 worth of chocolate but they have sent me short-dated items. Manufacturing dates are February 2021 and expire dates February 2022. I ordered them to send another country for my parents and it takes about two months to go there. And the items are not in good quality as they are damaged. It is not fair to clear the short-dated items when the customers order online.

Hi Thamara. Thank you for your reply and I do apologise that you are disappointed. We have the standard policy of a 3 month shelf life with the products we pack to ensure that they are kept fresh with it being a perishable item. When it does get close to the 2 month best before date we do offer a discount to reduce any stock we may have left rather than have to dispose of it. Kind regards, Friars Customer Service.

Friar's were recommended and what a disappointment. Strawberry cupcake, very nice, Lemon & Cappuccino cupcake absolutely tasteless, very little rum in Rum truffles and no raspberry flavour in Raspberry truffles. Back to Thorntons for me.

Extremely disappointed, the chocolates were sent to the incorrect address. We sent them on to our granddaughter Lydia Yeomans, 363B Brockley Road, London SE4 2AG on Monday 8th November, they have still not arrived. We are now concerned about the condition they will be in when they arrive. We telephoned you on Monday 8th but there was little you could do other than we returning them to you for a refund or we sending them on to Lydia. We chose the latter. Twice before we have sent your chocolates to Lydia in London without difficulty but sadly not this time.

I ordered this advent calendar because I thought Friars made vegan chocolate. I thought I had checked that it was Friars and therefore vegan. It was a gift but completely wasted as it wasnt vegan so she couldnt use it. Really disappointed as I have been using Friars for some time the vegan range is delicious. So will look elsewhere now.

Tasty cherry chocolates but they still had the cherry pits inside the chocolates. Could be really dangerous and result in an expensive trip to the dentist. Also the item got delivered with the chocolates all over the place: some of them were smashed.

Thank you for your review, I am very sorry to hear that the cherrys arrived damaged. with regard to the cherry stones being inside the chocolates, it does say on the product description that "the whole cherry, stone included. Never used Friars before, but was given a £20 gift voucher. I set up an account but no voucher was present. Contacted support who replied very quickly and they advised I had to create an account with the email address the voucher was sent to. The email never stated this, but I have been told the email has been changed to state this Secondly, my daughter is dairy and gluten free. On the website, I ticked both the gluten free option, and the dairy free option. However the chocolate was gluten free, but not dairy free. I now understand that even though I ticked both boxes, the website will not recommend things that are both gluten and dairy free, only one or the other. Stupid me to think there would be chocolate that is dairy free. My partner spotted this quite quickly on the packaging, so no harm done which was at least something. Finally, I had no issue with the taste of the milk chocolate items and would have it again. My partner had white chocolate and threw it away after saying it was quite unpleasant. Think i'll stick to Cadbury should I spend my own money, but as I was given a voucher at least i'm not out of pocket.

Thank you for your feedback. We understand that our website is not the easiest to navigate whilst needing two dietary requirements. However, it is possible, you would need to choose a dietary requirement first and then once selected, you then choose a secondary dietary filter. We do understand that this is not the easiest way. These were bought for a birthday present by searching online for all dark chocolates. When they arrived there was no key to indicate the flavours; a print-off from the website was very unsatisfactory and vague to identify the markings on each chocolate. In addition, the flavours were all too similar with little variation. If I were to compare them with another well known brand of chocolates (Black Magic) they lacked variety.

The strawberry truffles were awful and unfortunately so were the lemon turkish delight, the rose turkish delight were edible. Expensive mistake.

Product greatly received however paid for next day delivery (purchased on a Sunday) and was told Wednesday delivery which wasn't ideal - if you can only offer a 48 hr service please advise this. However the item didnt actually arrive until Saturday so very late and so had to give as a gift too late.

Whilst chocolate quality is good, Friars online presentation flattered to deceive the product size. I was dissapointed with the size/quatity of chocolate received, and therefore overall value for money.

sorry but the packaging was hopeless, it had split and the pieces of chocolate were rattling around in the box and the decorations had come off. Maybe rough handling in the post but the plastic covering of the chocolate should have remained intact no matter what treatment the cardboard package received. Need for a rethink

A lot of money for very little. Haven' tried the chocolates themselves yet because they are supposed for be for Easter. I wouldn't recommend.

Macaroons were disappointing. I expected them to be even better than Waitrose - soft and a bit chewy, tasty, and melt in the mouth. They were more like crunchy biscuits and not very tasty. The comment I received from Friars was ''sorry that they were not to my personal preference''. Otherwise delivery was good.
