About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“Good gym facilities, toning suite and sauna. Plenty of classes on offer. ☺️ Decent pool, more suitable for kids and family fun though rather than actual swimming as it gets way too overcrowded during swim only sessions. The water is unfortunately a bit cold, too. Unfortunately, the cleanliness standards are very poor. For example, the showers in the gym and pool have the same markings and soap suds on the doors and walls for days in a row. This therefore means that the basic levels of cleaning on a daily basis are not even being achieved. That's concerning when thinking of the areas that hold more dirt and bacteria because it's highly unlikely that these are receiving any attention. The drains in the showers often stink and flood and are visibly clogged with hair which is, quite frankly, DISGUSTING. I've become unwell since using the halo gym, which yes could be coincidental, but it's still important to consider based on the lack of cleanliness. I had a three week sinus infection and pneumonia for five weeks. After a gym session, I started to opt not to shower at halo but instead walked home to Brackla to shower instead because the halo showers were dirty and smelly. I raised the issue with the reception staff at halo who assured me the drains would be cleaned, but the problem persisted. I know of others who raised this same issue, too. The floors in the swimming pool changing area are not cleaned/mopped often enough. During the army cadets sessions in the pool for example, the floors have been very muddy from the cadet's boots which of course is unsanitary for people who are bare foot wanting to swim. The showers in the swimming pool are also grubby e.g. with hair and plasters on the floor. Vile. The carpet in the gym is very dirty and the equipment and floors are dusty. Fairly frequently, the sauna and/or steam room were out of order which was annoying. Based purely on the lack of cleanliness, halo isn't worth the money. What a shame.”

“The classes are amazing and Kelly is what keeps me at the leisure centre! I think many of my gym friends agree that classes like hit and lbt are really great. The gym itself is spacious and I like the new equipment. Free parking is very good and I make use of this even when just going for a walk around the racecourse It is good that you have introduced longer opening times on the weekend The cleanliness of facilities is what really let’s halo down. It is a regular discussion how dirty the floor is in the main studio. I understand the need for price rises but it seems that they are very frequent over the last year. I feel sometimes that I am paying for services I don’t use such as the swimming pool etc. it would be better if there was the option of a leisure centre only package. Lastly it seems unfair that different discounts are offered. For example I work for Hereford council but those working for the nhs pay less for the same membership”

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your experience at Halo. In regards to your comment about the changing rooms, they both have been undergoing refurbishment for the past 7 weeks and one of the changing rooms is already finished and opened as a unisex changing area at the moment as the second side gets finished. It is estimated in around 2 more weeks that both the changing rooms will be complete and open again as male and female areas. Kind Regards, Halo management team.

“Equipment is generaly in good working order and clean. However the gym and the mens changing room/showers are too cold. Showers are a pain to use as they go off every few seconds. The lockers in the changing room often do not lock properly. Staff are friendly.”

“My experience of Halo Leisure Centre and Pool have been great, the staff and instructors are excellent and very helpful. My only comment is that at the Pool there is no contingency for if the instructor is not available and there are often classes cancelled, sometimes at very short notice. I would have through there should be more than one person qualified to take the classes (in my case Aqua Aerobics) so that the class can go ahead. This is particularly important for people who have membership as if the class is cancelled you lose out financially as well as not having the health benefits of the session.”

“Staff are polite and friendly, the equipment is always well maintained and the entry system is efficient. The golf course could be better maintained but has remained open throughout a very wet Winter, so they should be given the chance to sort it out as it dries. The court hire cost is a little high, but at the same time there is always good availability.”
