About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 22 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“Hereford leisure centre is great but Hereford leisure pool is filthy! The swimming pool is disgusting, I once saw an ice cream plastic spoon floating whilst I swam by! The pool floor is covered in sand, loose tiles on the sides of the pool and some times it stinks by the shallow end of something similar sewage. I can only afford to use this pool and have to for training for my triathlons but please please clean it up, sort the filter out (guessing that’s where the sand is coming from) stop people walking in with shoes on with no covers. Make everyone shower never getting in the pool and stop letting people drink in the pool. Some people bring bottles to the edge of the pool but then take the lid off and drink the in pool. I’ve seen someone spill this before and it’s not nice swimming with that in the water.”

Dear Ezzy Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback on Halo. We are disappointed to read your feedback as staff take pride in the centre and being able to deliver a positive experience. If there are any occasions you are not satisfied with something please do raise it with any member of staff immediately and action will be taken. We do have a thorough pool water cleaning and filtration system and have recently purchased a second pool vac so we can reduce the amount of sand that comes through from the filters. We have had comments from customers that they have seen a vast improvement. We can only advise and educate customers to use overshoes and shower beforehand, it is not something that can be policed all the time. We have added more overshoe containers and shoe storage racks to encourage this further. We advise hydration whilst swimming like any other form of exercise so will encourage the use of water bottles, they obviously need to have appropriate liquid inside. I do hope your next visit is a positive experience, please do raise any concerns you may have to a member of staff. Kind regards, Hereford Leisure Pool

“Need a better range of fitness classes. No body attack, body combat, boxercise/ boxfit. Same classes are repeated. Tabata class is amazing but only on once a week on a Thursday so if you work that day you miss it. Also wish the classes were at 5.45pm instead of 5.30pm after work as can only just get there with a mad rush.”

“Have turned up to some classes only to be told that they have been cancelled. Pilates today, I was only informed by a friend who I usually attended with.”

“Bridgend facilities are good, instructors passionate about what they do and staff friendly. The gym is overcrowded during peak times though and maintenance and cleaning issues are not resolved very quickly. The spa is in need of a deep clean as spraying a hose pipe over dirty tiles does not remove the grime. Other customers share the same concerns about cleanliness. These have been reported to staff including managers over many years. I know for a fact the area in a photo I took (which I can’t seem to submit with this review) have not been cleaned since well before COVID lockdowns. When issues are reported I have been told the spa is cleaned regularly. As stated earlier, pointing a hose pipe at filthy tiles doesn’t remove the scum and dirt. I would like to see the spa cleaned properly and other maintenance issues fixed quickly. I will provide more examples. More posts to follow. Photos can be provided. I genuinely want to make the Halo in Bridgend even better than it already is. There are lots of good things, it’s a shame some basics don’t get done properly. Kind regards, Mike”

“My biggest complaint is that we do not have a Sauna any more. It was and would be an amazing incentive to swim and Gym ... it is a reward for coming down. I know many people who stopped coming when it was shut. The Jacuzzi could be turned into a cold plunge and thus would not need to be heated . Cold is best or just turned off. This would turn my ratings into a 5* Witout a cold plunge it would still be a 4.5* and amazing. I would pay £10/month extra for the Sauna on top pof my membership.”

“good number of exercise classes available sign in machines hardly ever work - its so frustrating that you have to end up queuing at reception to get swiped in to your booked class good variety of gym equipment but the gym needs regular cleaning by and around the equipment as lots of dirt and rubbish has built up. Also I think there needs to be max numbers in the gym - it doesnt seem to be controlled - also perhaps a separate gym for teenagers so they can sit chat and socialise”

“Not great. Showers cold Toilets the worst smelling toilets and dirtiest toilets ever been in (not a one off, have been like this for months) Water tap didn’t work for 6 months Equipment (cables) took 4 months? To fix Whilst it’s not the gyms fault, the idea of opening up the gym to school kids during peak hours is wrong. Between 4 and 6 the gym is packed, you cannot get on any equipment due to kids everywhere. However they are not working out, they are messing around, on their phones. A group of lads will take the bench press for 40 mins between them….”

“The classes are good, instructors are amazing , other staff are mostly friendly and facilities also of good quality. However, cleanliness and maintenance are letting Halo down. I’m looking at other options as the membership price has gone up nearly 20% but standards have dropped and hygiene is not pleasant being in the changing rooms or anywhere if I am being honest. The spa in particular needs a good clean and repairs required in the sauna itself to the wooden slats. The steam room requires scrubbing by hand to clean all the tiles plus repairs to loose tiles on the floor.”

“I miss butterfly chest machine, need more then one abs bench, need extra dumbell bars. Machine are old and rusty with missing weight stickers so unsure what weight you are using. Only weight scale would be nice to check weight quickly. Toilets are rather dirty and smells. Baby soft play is very dirty not nice for little kids.”

“Starting off the staff are outstanding. So friendly and helpful. The changing rooms needs a massive refurb, the changing facilities needs updating as half the curtains dont cover all the way. Lighting was an issue but now sorted and its freezing when you leave the pool area”

“We've been asking for a double cable weights machine for the last 3 years and you upgrade the gym with a load of cardiovascular machines. Really disappointing. Thinking of cancelling my membership and going somewhere with a tidy weight machines.”

“Not without it's charms. Lockers need to work and be repaired. Showers take too long to be fixed. Perhaps conspiration for neuro diverse people in the pool and music turned down a little?”
