About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“Pencoed Swimming Pool and Gym is a small venue but quite adequate for the size of the town. The pool is well used and offers various sessions. The gym is small but has a range of equipment and some space to do floor excercise. The staff and trainers are friendly and very helpful.”

“Much better experience now that the gym has been updated and the equipment is a little less dated. Downside, sometimes classes are brought into the gym so this sometimes limits space and can be off putting and frustrating.”

“I want to give more than 3! The staff are excellent in Ross Halo, HOWEVER the broken steam room for -12 months is shocking, completely unacceptable. I pay for full membership, including other Halo sites. I only use the pool, Pilates and Yoga classes and finish with a Sauna and NO STEAM ROOM for 12 months. Why am I paying for a service that doesn’t work? Bring back longer lane swimming sessions. Schools and other classes finish late almost everyday and you only get a 50 minute session.”

Hi Ceri, Thank you for the feedback! I do apologise that the steam room has been out of action for awhile. There have been multiple breakdowns and Multiple repairs in that time frame. We are currently in the process of purchasing a new unit, which should ultimately resolve the technical issues we have been having giving us a reliable steam room moving forward. As for sessions running behind. The staff all do there best to stick to the schedule. due to the tight turn arounds it can sometimes cause a small delay. We do run extended Lane swimming on Sundays there is a 90 Minute Lane swim and a 3 hour uninterrupted social swim if you want a longer swim.

“The new gym equipment is very good. I am not a fan of the loud music, it would be better if there was no music or different music. The showers are very poor. Water only flows for a matter of seconds before cutting out!”

“I have enjoyed using Ledbury Swimming Pool centre but it is looking increasingly shabby. I predominantly use the gym which has had numerous ceiling tiles missing for ages and buckets sat about catching drips from the leaking roof. The cable machine has been out of order for months. A lot of the grips on the dumbbells and resistance machines are battered. A big issue for me is the opening times which especially on the weekend are very limited. The booking system also makes it very awkward to use the facilities flexibly. I often thought it would be good to do a resistance workout in the gym then do some cardio in the pool but this never seems to be possible due to the schedule of when the pool is available and having to fit into restrictive session times. Similarly with the sauna, having the system where you have to book and then collect a band from reception puts in just enough barriers that you find you can’t be bothered.”

Rest assured, we’re actively working on maintaining our equipment and improving the overall appearance of the centre. We have received the go-ahead to replace the lat pull-down and chest press with brand-new replacements instead of replacing parts which were ordered last week. The ceiling tiles and the leaks are being investigated as well as a few other issues. We hope to have them rectified as soon as possible. Your concerns about opening hours and the booking system are valuable, and we will certainly take them into consideration as we look for ways to enhance the experience for our members. “The gym facilities and staff are all fantastic, especially Morgâne, who is always welcoming, friendly and supportive. I would like a few more classes, for example Pilates, yoga and general exercise. The changing room and toilets could really do with an update. The showers are not always working and the hand driers have not worked since before Xmas.”
