About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“I have only been a member of Craven Arms Halo for 2 months after I moved to CA from Hertfordshire. I use the library and have started to use the gym each week. I don't think the gym is used very much by the community (just an observation) and it does need better regular thorough cleaning of the surfaces - window sills, heaters, machines, which are all dusty and dirty. This does not give a good impression or encourage better attendance. Library and admin staff are very welcoming, local book displays, notices and posters, and leaflets about groups, meetings+++ are extremely well organised.”

“Halo in Merthyr has some great clubs, like the squash and karate club. As a family we attend the centre around 3-4 times a week. Unfortunately there is a real mix with staff. Some are lovely and always say hello but too many just ignore you when you enter. The squash courts themselves need to be cleaned as they are often dirty, especially after no squash user use them. The centre has been unfortunate to have has issues with children from the skatepark over the last month which made it unsafe for my son to attend on his own. It is also disappointing that the cafe isn't open regularly.”

“I’d say a positive experience only down to the Mon, Tues and Wed evening fitness classes and the class instructor. More care and time needs to be spent on the cleanliness of the place, especially the gym. Pool is ok, toilets and showers are rather grubby and again more care needs on cleaning here. Never have much interaction with staff so I can’t comment on the staff.”

“Since halo have taken over i can see a big improvement with the cleanliness. The class options i understand are being reviewed and I'm interested to see the difference this will bring, especially for 9 to 5 workers. However it disappointing to see that recently alot of the 8pm lane swims have been dropped. My friend and I used these ofter after a long day at work, finishing at 7.30pm it worked well to fit onto the end of the day to relax. I'm hoping these will return. Recently I have encourage 6 friends over to join but depending on the changes for availability of swimming options and classes I may need to look else where.”

“Very helpful, friendly staff which makes for a good atmosphere. Could be cleaner and some aspects of the changing room are not user-friendly, e.g. mirrors too high for some. I'm just 5ft! Our age group (pensioners) enjoy our sessions and are grateful for the facility.”

“I originally joined the GP Exercise Referral Scheme. Staff were encouraging, helpful and friendly. Met some lovely people. When my time on that finished, I signed up for Fit for Life membership because of the support I received previously.”

“Broken seats in all of the men's toilets were not very clean on Tuesday there was at least twenty minutes when there was not a lifeguard at pool side which I thought was not very safe”

“My son and myself went for a lane swim at Pontypool Leisure Centre this evening and did not enjoy our swim at all. Only 2 lanes were given over to lane swimming with the other 4 being used for swimming lessons. Both lanes were overcrowded with fast swimmers and slow swimmers mixed together which meant that you were constantly avoiding other swimmers. Not good enough.”
