“There was a wide selection of courses so I was able to choose the one that I thought would suit me best. Self directed study worked very well for me, but I was astounded at the complete lack of citations of any references to the theoretical knowledge underpinning the content. I also found it very difficult to not engage in much critical thinking about the content, it was very prescriptive and, at times, based on my existing teaching experience, I disagreed with what I was being asked to do as a TEFL teacher, but there was little room for debate. Although the assessments were varied, the expectations were high, in terms of word limits, which constrained answers. It is really difficult to 'analyse' a concept in 100 words, to a good academic standard, for example. The learning outcomes of each assessment could have been much clearer. Despite the many frustrations with what I was being asked to do and the manner in which I was asked to respond in assessments, once I had worked out that I was only required to reproduce TEFL information, I found it easier to achieve.”

“I greatly appreciate the TEFL Org course. I thought it was thoughtful, thorough, and well-organized. I feel much better prepared to teach English learners of all levels! I especially appreciated having videos of example lessons for real students. The only aspect of the course that I thought was too long was the modules on online/phone teaching and teaching large classes; these could have been shorter as there was little new information contributed during these modules.”

“I thought that the course was very well laid out and the site was easy to navigate. I thought that the teaching was very good and watching the class videos was helpful. My only negative was that in the entire course, the assumption was that you were teaching students with a good base of English already. I was hoping for some guidance on how to teach people with very little English, or none at all. This was not covered and TEFL.org doesn't seem to have a course that covers this.”

“I thought the course was well structured, it's nice to do it at your own pace. The tutors are great, I had emailed once as the feedback was really unclear and they got back to me quickly. I was alittle annoyed by one of the examples which described the uk. It was full of stereotypes and clichés. Not appropriate for language learners and if it were to be said about any other country it would be an obvious issue. This is only a very minor element to the course though and I'd still recommend this particular organisation if you really need it.”

“I found a few errors. I started to take pictures to send you but didn’t capture them all. The test on telephone teaching was very difficult because the questions were too vague or the questions were different than the education. One of the unit quizzes had two tests that were exactly the same (copy and pasted twice accidentally. The photos I took I can send to you or Thomas.”

“I found the 120 hour online course to be very comprehensive and had a strong sense of learning a lot and being assessed. The video of the same teachers and students became a bit tedious after a while and looks a tad dated but I understand it is difficult to get commitment from both students and teachers to be videoed. More variety would have been welcome. The 20 day in class session was very valuable but could have been more productive - it seemed to me that we could have learned the same amount in one day or spent more time learning about how to teach and practicing than we did - so a tighter timetable could have delivered more. Also, a windowless room below ground was a dismal setting for two days (although perfectly clean and in a nice central hotel).”

“TEFL Org’s 120 hour TEFL course was quite good. I found the video demonstrations and quizzes useful and the theory was great. I also loved the format as I could work through it on my phone during the day whenever I had a spare minute because of the transcripts. The only thing I found very unhelpful was the feedback on the assignments. All of my feedback referenced a specific “TEFL method” which was never talked about in any of the actual course modules or resources section. The tutor used the same copy paste version of the definition on every assignment instead of trying to explain it more fully. Very disappointing to follow all the directions for assignments again and again and still receive poor feedback even though I passed the assignment based on a method that was never explicitly taught.”

“To be very honest, I thought I was going to be helped by a tutor online rather than only receive feedback and help when needed, maybe that was my error of judgement I'm not sure. Also, in Malta they wouldn't recognize the level 4 online course but I appreciate you upgrading my level 5.”

“Lessons and Modules were informative and easy to understand. Quizzes and assignments were well designed to check for comprehension and assignment feedback was prompt and detailed as well as supportive. I have left the course feeling confident that I could successfully instruct English learners and feel well equipped with the knowledge base and skills to successfully manage a classroom and teach a variety of learners.”

“I found the course to be very helpful in my journey to teach English. I enjoyed how it provided guidance on how to teach English in a number of settings. The fact that I could complete the course at my own pace was hugely beneficial to me and I found that I could manage my own time very effectively because of this. However, I grew frustrated with my tutor for not providing very effective feedback and just providing examples on how to rewrite specific sections of one of my assignments, rather than telling me how I can improve.”

“Overall, the 120-hour certification course is a good program. It is by far better than all of the methodology courses I took when I earned my BA in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Teaching English as a Second or Other Language. They left us hanging and completely dependent on our student teaching for everything your TEFL program teaches through videos and instruction. I was grateful to finally learn by watching your tutors teaching classes everything my alma mater didn't teach. With that being said and to reiterate what I said in my feedback for each of the four courses, many of your methods videos and instructional videos throughout the courses need to be updated. They were filmed in 2017, in just a few months it'll be 2024. As I've also said, you have one tutor, whose name is Dee, with an American accent. Her videos for me, were impossible to watch due to irritating voice inflections, body language, hand-gesturing choices, weird long pauses in her delivery, head snapping, and neck jerking to flip her bangs out of the way. I had to move her videos up off the screen so that I could read the transcript while she read. In a nutshell, you need new videos. Otherwise, I learned a lot and plan to enroll in the 40-hour Advanced Online Teaching course. If it wasn't for the old videos, I would have given you 5 stars.”

“The lady lecturer seemed to just be reading and didn't always know what she was saying in the grammar lectures. Some examples weren't correct. In the methodology lectures, I think, there was one example video with the Scottish teacher and the debate topic was 'are women or men better drivers' - it kind of seemed dated - 1990's, sexist. The online teaching course didn't really give much to someone who's already gone through teacher's college or TEFL. It's kind of common sense, if you've ever taught online, and not a lot in the way of business tips, marketing, etc., which is what a seasoned teacher really needs to make the transition to online. Overall, the course was a good review of some of the topics covered when I was in teacher's college.”
