All of our teabags (with the exception of Organic) are produced using a material called ‘PLA’ (polyactic acid) which is a 100% plant-based and biodegradable material. (Unfortunately, to date, we have not yet had this new tea bag material approved by our organic certification body, so we haven't yet been able to switch our Organic Teabags. We continue to work with our tea bag supplier and our organic certification body to overcome this.)
Plastic sealants are resistant to heat and water, allowing teabags to form and not fall apart when brewing a cup of tea. It's been an industry-wide challenge to find a solution to move away from traditional oil-based plastic to seal tea bags. The UK tea industry all face the same problem of trying to find a more sustainable teabag – and for us all, the same solution exists; replacing the traditional oil-based plastic, with bio-based, plant-based plastic, PLA. Unfortunately, some brands, are choosing to call this PLA teabag material “plastic free”. We do not align with this position, as PLA is formed of starch polymers, which by definition are a plastic.
If you have a council food bin or an organic waste collection, use these to dispose of spent tea. Your spent bags will be disposed of at industrial compost facilities. Unfortunately, they can’t be composted at home. Therefore, if you don't have a local council food waste collection service, we recommend you dispose of spent tea leaves in a home compost bin (if you have one), and dispose of tea paper separately in your general waste collection. We'd really like to see all local councils offering food/organic waste collections, so that everyone can dispose of these PLA tea bags in the best possible way.
Within our Ringtons Sustainability Plan we are committed to using packaging materials that have a proven waste route (i.e. not landfill), and to provide consistent disposal information on-pack to allow our customers to dispose of our packaging appropriately. We are aiming to achieve these commitments by the end of 2025.
We know we have work to do but are actively working to enact our commitments.
