Good knowledge of mortgage markets and friendly advice over phone. Communication by email was generally poor. After what seemed an age going back on forth on providing self assessment statements due to lack of clarity on what was actually required. Only one or two mortgage rates and options would be communicated at any given time leading to lots of back and forth to explore all the costs and options, with all the questions being driven by myself rather than forthcoming from GHL. In my past experience with other providers, all of this would be clearly summarised in one email. This meant that the mortgage process took a long time. It was also not made clear at the start of the engagement that GHL could not offer rates directly with the banks. The terms of business were not shared on initial contact. Leading to me find rates on the internet which were better than GHL could offer. Even now I am unclear whether the £495 I paid for my buy to let mortgage offer gives me lifetime membership with GHL.

Hi Jaideep, I am sorry that you are unhappy with the service you have received from James, one of our qualified mortgage advisers. I have spoken at length to him and I understand your case did take longer to arrange than would typically be considered normal, but I believe this was due to the complexity of your particular application and the various options being explored with and for you. I understand your buy to let mortgage was arranged by James and has now been completed and you were going to apply to your existing residential lender when you found a suitable property to purchase. Although you would be doing this directly with them, James did advise you that he would be happy to help you with the application. GHL do not offer lifetime fees, the fee charged was for arranging the buy to let mortgage and you signed a fee agreement confirming the terms prior to the commencement of the work. With regard to the rates available to us, we have access to the standard products of over 55 lenders in the UK including all the major banks and a number of intermediary exclusives. However, the majority of lenders also operate a retail network and have rates not available to mortgage intermediaries, on occasions these may be slightly better than we have access to and sometimes they are not. I appreciate that you are frustrated your application took some months, but having reviewed your case, I believe James conducted himself in a professional manner doing his best to assist you, in a time where the financial markets have been particularly turbulent. If you feel this is not satisfactory you can also complain formally by writing to Openwork who will then carry out a formal investigation into this case. Kind Regards GHL Direct

Although she did very well sorting us a mortgage out and was very fast to reply and help out, she was very rude to me and my partner regarding life insurance which can’t be justified.

We are delighted she was able to assist you in obtaining your mortgage but obviously sorry that you feel she was then rude to you when discussing your Life Insurance requirements. Having spoken to Joanne and reviewed the emails between you, we are of the opinion that she fulfilled her role as your adviser and met her regulatory obligations in correctly advising you on the importance of life insurance. We are sorry that you thought her rude and can assure you this was not her intent, she just wanted to ensure you were correctly advised.
