About Halo:

Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 25 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities. We often discuss our status as a social enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a social enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

The money we make is ploughed back into the facilities.

“Th exercise studio is in constant use but has no working air conditioning. It is certainly below the level I would expect and appears to have not been updated for a long time. Especially in recent days I would consider it being unsuitable for types of classes being held there”

“Its is great that you have put a gym in the Craven Arms centre but the experience is limited becuase there are no shower facitities - clearly that would be a large expense and whislt I do understand the cost of upgrading and runnining a shower area has hugh budget implications it just feels a bit underwelming changnig in the loos and climbing into your car after a session all sweaty! Not sure what you can do about that?”

“Please can you reopen the toilets in Pontypool leisure centre by the cafe before park run starts on a Saturday. I am a paying member of your gym and would like to be able to use the toilet before I start park run. It now means that park runners are walking through the whole of the leisure centre looking for toilets. It maybe worth mentioning that they are often in a disgusting state (not from park runners I may add). We have many park run tourists who would also like to use the toilet after sometimes a long journey and who often stop in the cafe afterwards to spend their money in the leisure centre. Let’s welcome people here, not put them off. The toilets in the park are in an even worse state so please don’t suggest using those.”

“Swimming lesson spoiled. Tuesday my grandson was nervously waiting for his first wave 3 session, with the teachers help we got him started and he enjoyed. Unfortunately we couldn't find anywhere to change after he eventually had a shower. We walked around for a good 10 minutes but there were clothes in every cubicle. Poor boy was very cold, not good enough.”

We’re glad to hear he enjoyed the session, but we’re truly sorry for the inconvenience you faced with the changing facilities. It’s not acceptable that you couldn’t find a clean and available space after his shower, and we understand how distressing that must have been for both of you. We are using many methods to try and mitigate this challenge with limited space, you are more than welcome to use the group changing rooms if this helps Your feedback is invaluable, and we will work on addressing this challenge to improve the experience for future visitors. “The staff on reception very helpful . The changing rooms wow need sorting out . No locking lockers . Shower stunk of urine and very dirty and dilapidated looking . This facility needs money spent on it to sort it out asap. Maesteg community and further afield who use it deserve more . Pool a lovely size for children . Come on Halo sort it out !!”

“We love Cwmbran stadium and pontypool active leisure centre However the swimming facilities needs to be improved. This is very disgusting and the state of the changing rooms needs to be improved massively.”

“I attended Bridgend Recreation Centre on Wednesday with my granddaughter. We were going swimming. I feel I must bring up the cleanliness in the changing rooms. It was absolutely disgusting. One of the drains had black mould and clumps of hair in it. I understand it is difficult to keep swimming areas clean, but the filth here was says old. Surely the area should be cleaned at least once a day?”

“The cafes in Merthyr and Aberfan closes too early. Surely it would make more sense to be open during these peak times. Closing the cafes at 6pm just seems crazy. I take my children swimming and it would be nice to use the cafe and maybe catch up on some work while I'm there. Unfortunaltely because you close the cafe at 6pm means I can't even have a coffee and I have to sit in the swimming spectators area where it is too hot. I'm not the only one who shares this dissatisfaction as several of the parents share the same opinion and the cafe staff aren't the nicest.”

“A great facility to have locally . Friendly reception staff when present . Ladies changing room needs a deep clean and standards need to be maintained . Walls still show evidence of old sticky tape from previous posters ! There is a solvent available to remove this . Music is often played too loudly spoiling the relaxing nature of swimming . Actual pool is obviously well maintained, but pool side could be improved by less clutter.”

“the gym has gone downhill substancially, since i last came half of it has been closed off and some of the machines are now nowhere to be seen. the lack of machines is also dissappointing”

Thank you for your feedback. We are still working our way through the repair works following the flood in September of last year, hence why the gym is in a smaller area. In July we will be back fully operational, with more equipment than what we had prior to the floods. Thanks matt

“The reason I have cancelled my membership is due to over crowding in the pool, to then increase pool occupancy even more. It was impossible to have an enjoyable swim.”

“Needs updating again on the outside and inside, absolutely filthy floors and changing rooms which have bad smells of urine Never any managers around except young staff not doing much in the way of cleaning areas or checking people are not wearing outdoor shoes walking into the changing rooms or near the pools waiting for their kids to come out It is a shame but standards have dropped quite a bit. It is a popular pool but people will go elsewhere if they are not careful”

“- Cardio quipment very temperamental (often have 'out of order' signs on) - Weights equipment is years overdue replacement - Too many kids messing around (it's a gym, not a playground) - Small dumbbells randomly disappear into the dance studio (should have it's own dumbbells in studio) - Generally badly maintained showers/changing rooms (clothes pegs been snapped off for past year or so, and not bothered to be replaced) same with lock on one of the changing cubicles. It's not that expensive to fix - Younger staff barely acknowledge you, especially at reception (usually chatting or on phones) zero social skills”

“I use Ynysawdre Halo centre as it is local to my house. It used to represent good value for money, but several of the classes I attended, Body Sculpt on a Thursday and LBT on a Friday have now stopped - this is for £41 a month. The gym is okay, but the classes offer is poor. I am probably going to cancel my membership and join Puregym - if only because it will be 30% cheaper The instructors are excellent however.”

“I've been using Maesteg swimming pool for many years. I am disappointed to write a poor review as the staff are wonderful. However, the condition of the pool, changing rooms and public areas are in such a poor state, I have withdrawn my monthly membership as its not worth the cost. Money urgently needs to be spent on this much needed facility.”
