For me, at this time, the jury is still deliberating... as we might say. I have not received a review of the last (fifth course) of the 120-hour training. I submitted my final exam one day before the course expiration date (On April 17/expiration on April 18). Thus, I do not know if I have passed the final course, today being 4/30/25. I found the course to be sufficiently rigorous. As a native English speaker with with a critical ear for abused uses of English, I found the level of training to be challenging. The tutors held the line on the teaching/training standards, requiring me to 'try it again'. Throughout the course, the most difficult concept for me was getting a solid understanding of 'discover the meaning'. I can't yet say if it was the way this idea was coached or if I simply did not spend enough time working to grasp the idea. I enjoyed taking the ten-item tests with the option to repeat the test for better scores. It served as motivation for me to review my understanding and knowledge of the readings. My least favorite encounters were the video exchanges. The presentations in the videos were fast moving and I became critical of the 'speed-talking' by the video instructors. (I kept thinking how is this effective communication for English learners; trying to absorb vocabulary and meaning at such a pace.) I started reading the dialogue scripts for a clearer understanding of the lessons. As a result of taking this training I feel prepared to develop lesson plans that benefit English-learners and provide them with the confidence to use the language.

The online course was easy to follow and assignments were relevant. Sometimes, the guidance wasn't clear that lesson plans had to sue the exact TEFL method in order to pass. Tutor was quick to mark and give feedback though so never an issue.

The TEFL Org provide a good breadth of information across what appears to be the main topics of which an ESOL teacher would be expected to have knowledge and be able to teach. At the end of the 120 hours I felt like I had learned a lot but was a bit unsure if I had enough to teach. Completing the 20 hour face 2 face (on line) weekend really brought it all together for me. The only down side would be the support I received from my tutor. He didn’t seem to have any interest in marking my assignments and the comments felt like irrelevant cut and paste jobs from having marked previous students. The online tutor in direct contrast was incredible with a huge amount of energy, amazing subject knowledge and very useful feedback. (Thank you Elizabeth!) Not sure what the Delivery questions were about- this was all on line.

The content is excellent and very comprehensive. The quizzes enhance the learning through gap fillers, MCQ, true or false, and assignments incrementally help the learner to use and implement theory into practice through the designing of lesson plans. It provides a hands-on opportunity to design them. However, at times there are multiple issues in the videos related to audio. Moreover, subtitles combined with sub-headings such as "lead-in," "Presentation," etc as applicable at transitions in the video would help the learner to follow the videos of classroom lessons without having to shift from video to transcript. Also, quite a few times, I observed there were issues with the website when the quizzes were being answered: the answers were not updated especially during second attempt onwards. In addition, the drop down answers to fill gaps in a sentence were far too small to see and select. This is a major issue when answering such quizzes. As far as editing and submitting assignments is concerned, there could be a provision to include illustrations such as the timelines. If possible, there could be a warning when the text exceeds the word count beyond the allowed 10% excess word limit. In fact, there was no warning regarding the minimum word count required for assignments, i.e. permissible minimum word count is only 10% less than the maximum word count: if the maximum word count is 600, a minimum required is 540 words and excess words is 660 words which is 10% more or less than the declared "maximum" word count. This ambiguity or unspoken role (minimum word count for passing) could create unnecessary attempts. Nevertheless, generally speaking, the instructions are clear and detailed. The tutor (Denise Hart) was very helpful with detailed instructions to improve the assignment. Sometimes, the error was on my side due to a long and comprehensive requirement for passing the assignment. Regardless, the tutor was very patient to point out areas needed to improve the written assignment. However, the issue regarding a minimum word count requirement was only clarified on specific inquiry. My penultimate observation is regarding student data or information available with the tutors. They didn't seem to have or didn't check the records for the name of the learner. Denise definitely had checked the data for the recorded name, in spite of the glitch. The virtual classroom tutor seems to have taken the name from the zoom window rather than the official data that may have been available to her. Last but not the least, as I have mentioned in another place through email, the profile updation is also a problem especially when the name is updated. It took all the updated info instead of only retaining the last update. Hence, there is evidently a glitch in the software. I am reporting all of the above based only on my own experience. I found the content challenging and a great refresher for terms and concepts I had forgotten about. However, this course did not do a great job teaching how to write a lesson plan. What would have been more effective is to show the lesson plan in conjunction with the video. I also wish there was more diversity with the skill level of the videos. It was the same group for most of the videos, whom I thought had a pretty good grasp on English. But again, telling us what level those groups were would have been helpful.

I would not recommend this platform to anyone. Poor tutor support, vague feedbacks, lack of communication, non response for complaining or demands. Delay in feedback delivery. The worst experience with online platform.

Overall the course was excellent and I learned a lot. It is a bit disconcerting to be asked to feed back as I haven’t finished all the courses I signed up for in the bundle, but have been issued with a certificate which includes some of the additional advanced courses that I have completed in addition to the main diploma. Hopefully when I finish the last two courses these will be added to the certificate and it will be reissued to show everything? I did ask for support after I failed the Telephone Teaching add-on course for the second time. The answer was confused and perverse. It is nothing personal about the advisor, although I did wonder if it was a real person or an AI answering because the answer did appear to include an AI hallucination (something which was illogical or factually incorrect that a thinking real person would not have written or said). Apologies to your support staff if they were just having a bad day. Telephone Teaching Course final question (17) Another teacher asks you for ideas for activities that can be used at each stage of a group PPP telephone class on the past simple tense. Which of the following is NOT a suitable activity? 1) For a lead-in get students to tell each other what they do on their holidays, get some feedback and write it on the interactive whiteboard. 2) For a presentation elicit the past forms of regular and irregular verbs and get students to write them in columns on the interactive whiteboard. 3) For a practice display a gap fill on screen - students have to complete the gaps with the past form of regular and irregular verbs. 4) For a production display a list of sentences that all have past simple errors. Students identify the errors and correct them. I wrote to support and asked for help … The question is confusing because it says that the activities have to be suitable AT EACH STAGE, which makes no sense because none of the activities can be used at each stage, we use different types of activities at each stage not the same types of activity at each stage. Is my neurodiversity getting in the way of my understanding?  I added ...   1) This is suitable, assuming the teacher has an interactive whiteboard, there are two answers with an interactive whiteboard and they can’t both be NOT suitable, so this has to be suitable even though an interactive whiteboard is a physical thing not a virtual zoom / teams software thing.  2) This cannot be suitable because assuming there is an interactive whiteboard in the location where the teacher is, however unlikely that is, the students will not be able to write on it as they are not in the same room. This is therefore NOT suitable.  3) Students can look at the screen and verbally state what the past forms of the verbs are, so this is suitable, and therefore NOT NOT suitable.  4) This is probably the answer the test is looking for, because it describes structured practice in an activity that is supposed to be free production, so the question might be about a classroom PPP lesson and isn’t actually anything to do with the telephone teaching course. They answered in red …  Yes A is suitable lead-in. B: This is not suitable as they cannot have access to this board. C: This activity relies on a visual component, i.e., displaying a gap fill on screen. In a telephone class, students cannot see anything. There's no screen, so they wouldn't be able to read the gaps or complete the task effectively. D: Making a list of sentences is not free practice so not production. So, this is NOT suitable and is the correct answer. This reply is just nonsense. According to support the last three are not suitable, but the question states only one is not suitable. They argue that A is suitable because it has the teacher writing on an interactive whiteboard, but that C is not because in a telephone class students can’t see anything including a whiteboard. According to the question it is a group class, not an individual one, so some form of software whiteboard screen is likely to be available given the context of the question. Further the support answer agrees that B is a NOT suitable answer, which was the answer I chose as NOT suitable. My answer should therefore not have been marked wrong as I correctly identified one of the NOT suitable answers. There are other occasional examples of irrational and incorrect wrong answers being required in other tests throughout the course. It also shows that the question writer here cut and pasted this question in from a classroom teaching course, because it belongs in a module about the specifics of PPP classroom lessons. It isn’t testing material covered in the Telephone teaching course so is quite unfair. It would have been clearer as a classroom course question if it had asked “Which activity is not suitable for that stage of a PPP lesson?” (not at each stage). However support clearly did not understand this any better than I because they also got hung up on whether there was an interactive whiteboard or not and somehow used that to justify their ‘correct answer’. Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed taking the course, thank you.

Due to the exclusive reliance on written correspondence, in the absence of telephone or voice communication, the risk of miscommunication and decreased efficiency is significantly heightened.

Hi Charlotte, Thank you so much for your feedback! We understand your point about the reliance on written communication. As our tutors support a number of students at once, we've found that the best way to ensure everyone receives a timely response - and that coursework is marked within the promised 48-hour window - is by keeping communication to email. This helps our tutors stay focused and avoid delays that might come from needing to step away from marking to take calls. If you ever have concerns or need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email. We're here to assist you! Best wishes, The TEFL Org Team

I did a TEFL course in order to get access to certain job vacancies I hadn't seen anywhere else. I passed the course (teaching neurodiverse students), which I found interesting and useful. I'm sure it will be a useful addition to my CV. However, the job vacancy I am less happy with. I want to teach during my summer break in Ukraine or Poland and have secured a couple of short engagements in Poland outside of TEFL.org. The TEFL.org vacancy shown for a summer camp has 3 different ways to contact them and they have not replied on any of them. As I have not seen this camp advertised anywhere else, I am starting to think that it doesn't exist. Certainly, other places at least have the courtesy to send you a 'thanks, but no thanks' email or indeed an automatically generated 'Don't call us, we'll call you' reply. In this case, zero. Can you please confirm whether this vacancy is indeed a genuine offer?
