“Ignore the postcode when using SatNav. Do not turn left at the college, drive straight on. The houses are on the right. None of our group had a phone signal here. House and facilities were good. Communication ahead of the trip was good.”
“Lovely cottage, well equipped & comfortable to spend time in. Our only gripes were the quality & comfort of the mattresses in the upstairs bedrooms, leading to unsettled sleep and sadly the hot tub stopped working on the Sunday evening. Otherwise loved the area, enjoyed Ludlow & recommend the swan pubs Sunday roast”
“Fossil Cottage is situated on a pleasant and quiet cl de sac and is in a good spot for getting around Dorset, there's a good bus service too (Lyme Regis, Weymouth etc) if you want to leave the car behind.
Fossil Cottage was generally comfortable and clean but for a 4 star property the overall impression was a little disappointing:
The kitchen sink and taps need replacing as they are badly tarnished and the dish draining rack is rusty in places.
The bed linen in the main bedroom was obviously meant to be white but was grey (from age), it was also un-ironed and two of the pillowcases were too small for the pillows. The bed linen in the second bedroom (which we didn't use} was in a much better condition.
Some paintwork, notably on the bannisters is badly scratched or needs freshening up.
The 2 sets of french doors in the lounge and the garden room are made up of lots of small panes of
glass and in a number cases the double glazing had failed meaning those panes were misted up spoiling the pleasant view from the rear of the house. These windows were also in need of a clean internally (the window cleaner arrived while were there to do the outside).
The taps on the sink in the main bathroom need attention - the hot tap had to be rotated at least 3 times before any water came out. The main bathroom was also rather tired looking, in contrast the downstairs shower room was very good.
I notice that Fossil Cottage is no longer listed on your website and if that is because the owner wishes to sell the property that might explain their reluctance to make any improvements. However, I feel that Sykes as the letting agent should keep a closer eye on the properties they rent out and if necessary change the star rating.”
“Lovely cottage in a great location for peace and quiet and short walks to the coast. From arriving at the top of the hill that leads down to the cottage the views across the sea to Portland are fantastic. The cottage has everything you would expect and was clean on arrival. The garden is big with plenty of space for our 2 dogs to roam and explore. The thing we enjoyed best was the walks available straight from our door step into the woods, down to the beach and beyond. A walk to the Smugglers Inn for a drink is a must!
We will definately be staying again”

House was very spacious and well equipped. Garden great for dog and plenty of walks near by.
The only thing negative was could possibly do with some new bath towels. But this is a tiny issue and by no means deterred from our great stay.”
“we booked a cottage at Higher Whidden well (Devon) for one week then noctice 5 nights was available to extend our stay, Sykes charged me two mounts of bookng fees for just extended our one weeks holiday, dont know of any other holiday rentals would do this.”
“Cottage was lovely and clean and everything from food welcome pack to bedding was all top quality, keys were easy to access via key safe next to front door, heating and hob/cooker etc all easy to use and worked ok and owners were very helpful if there were any questions.
Village lovely with a very atmospheric old church and churchyard and we heard an owl which must have been very close to cottage and which hooted for around half an hour, all in all a very pleasant stay, only one slight downside was there was a neon light flashing all night on another property in back and which illuminated in major en suite bedroom.”
