When travelling overseas, the one thing you should never skimp on is your travel insurance cover, as should things go wrong you want the very best cover for you and your possessions.

At The True Traveller, we’re used to advising people on travelling all around the world, and due to feedback from our customers we’ve changed our insurance website, made it even better value and extended the range of products.

On Single Trips, we offer three Policies called True Value, Traveller and Traveller Plus. True Value is designed for travellers under 40 years of age, and is designed for last minute travellers and backpackers. The Traveller policy, our most popular, is designed for holiday makers and adventurous travellers alike, and Traveller Plus gives enhanced medical and cancellation cover.

On our Multi Trip Policies, again we offer the Traveller policy valid for unlimited trips throughout the year for durations up to 30 days, and the Traveller Plus policy which offers enhanced cover for unlimited trips lasting up to 70 days. We also have a budget True Value Policy for travellers under 40 years of age.

We’ve tried to get the prices as keen as possible on all our insurances. This means on the Single Trip and Multi-Trip you have the option to exclude Baggage Cover as this may well be covered in your Home Contents insurance; you also have the option to add-in different activity packs. The Traveller Pack covers 92 of the regular holiday activities which you will get involved in, and covers clerical/non-manual work as standard. The Adventure Pack covers a further 41 activities and is designed for the more adventurous traveller and backpacker, covering trekking to 4,600m, as well as volunteer work and manual work. The Extreme and Ultimate Packs covers all the more extreme and ultimate adventures. The Extreme covers trekking over 4,600m to any altitude, as well as Scuba Diving to 50M. The Ultimate covers Hang Gliding, Mountaineering and Polo to name just three of the Ultimate adventures!

“This is my 3rd year with TT. I had a substantial claim last year for emergency surgery which required flights and accommodation to Sydney. it was handled absolutely professionally with a full payout without issue. They may not be the cheapest option but in my opinion they are the best. I can fully recommend True Traveller”

“Every aspect of the insurance policy is easily but clearly explained, and thus you can buy the specific insurances you need without too many worries. Also it is one of the very few company covering sport risks of very different types. 5* for the choice and activation of the policy. I don't have experience on its use in the event of an accident, but I hope I won't need to activate it”

“I am so happy for making a great choice about choosing my travel insurance! After researching all the options True Traveller had great reviews and packages for very affordable prices. Luckily I've had to use it only twice during my 1 year of traveling across SE Asia. In first case I've received a response in less than 24h that they received my claim and paid me full amount of money. Today I've made another claim and received a response from Lesia in only 2 hours that they will fully pay me back my medical expenses!! I must mention that my friend made a claim more than 1 month ago to his travel insurance (another company) and still haven't received any response. For that reason I am more than thrilled how fast True Traveller takes the action and will definitely recommend them to everyone!”

This is a review from a genuine True Traveller customer, not a fake one, and in fairness we agree with much of what has been said. It is true that customers can take out policies with True Traveller once they have already left home. We are one of the very few insurers that allow this, which can be helpful if insurance has been forgotten or a previous policy has expired and cannot be renewed. It is also correct that when applying for cover, there are several clear warnings explaining that these policies are non-refundable once you are abroad. This is consistent with policies taken out at home, where the 14-day cooling-off period only applies until travel begins. We do occasionally see customers take out insurance while already travelling to meet requirements for immigration, cruise companies, or medical treatment, and then later request a refund. We are currently dealing with an ongoing case in Canada of this nature. When you pay a regulated travel insurer, your money is held in a ring-fenced bank account controlled by the insurer themselves — in our case, AXA. We do not have access to these funds, which is in place to protect customers. This customer contacted our sales team several times regarding a refund and was advised that this was not possible. The matter was then reviewed by our compliance officer, who did try to assist, but the only circumstance in which a refund can be arranged is if the policyholder has returned home. He was understandably disappointed to be described as a “jobsworth” and “patronising”, as all correspondence was polite and professional, although we are unable to share emails due to data protection and privacy obligations. Finally, like other companies, we have experienced issues with Trustpilot publishing reviews that appear to be fake, which is why we also recommend checking Google Reviews or Reviews.io. “Excellent insurer used for 6 month trip to Southeast Asia. In the last week of my trip I had an item stolen and submitted a travel insurance claim a few days later. Wilma and Abbas handled my claim incredibly quickly and without any fuss I was compensated in full for the theft. Really took the sting out of a bad experience. From the start, the process of getting a quote was extremely clear and highly customisable. While travelling whenever I looked to the information provided or the website for clarification, my question was answered clearly, using non-technical, unambiguous description. Extending my insurance was also easy, though I was disapointed to discover how much more expensive per week the shorter insurance period transpired to be - insurance is not cheap, but TT was at least as good value as other insurers I investigated before leaving.”
