We used Richardson and Starling for major dry rot repairs in Elgin. We had 6 areas of dry rot in a house purchased for restoration. Do not be fooled by a professional looking website. The quality of the workmanship was terrible in the extreme. Floor joists which had been spliced were supported by lumps of sandstone between the joist and the wall head, which soon gave way causing the floor to drop 20mm; wall framing in kitchen had to be redone because it was so far off square making it impossible to fit kitchen units; Floor boards which had been replaced by them were cut too short leaving a gap in front of the skirting board; a lack of DPC on the end of new joists resulting in bare timber coming into contact with the wall pockets in the stonework. Some attempt was made to rectify these problems, but still, the poor workmanship of Richardson & Starling shows up time after time. We should have realised at the time that this would be the outcome, when they left 3 unopened containers of Microtech Biocide for us to use ourselves. Our most serious complaint is that the dry rot returned. Following an inspection beneath the floor boards by ourselves 6 months after R&S had finished, we could see new fruiting bodies. We commissioned an independent survey which showed up hyphae, mycelicum and 3 fruiting bodies at the very centre of the original outbreak. Although they returned to deal with this, IT HAS SINCE RETURNED A SECOND TIME and has now been dealt with by another company. R&S also made a complete mess in relaying the floor boards they'd lifted, minus the tongue which had been destroyed, leaving us with a significant gap between the boards. These have also been replaced by another firm. In all, we are left with NO GUARANTEE from RICHARDSON & STARLING despite numerous emails and phone calls. We spent in excess of £50,000. for the work they carried out, and a further £28,000. to undo and redo the work they carried out as a result of their terrible workmanship. We live with the fear that the dry rot which they supposedly treated, will return. In conclusion, avoid them at all cost.
Dear Mr Murray, We are sorry to hear that you wouldn't recommend our services to others. We will pass your message to the relevant branch manager for investigation.
Although the standard of work was proficient and competent, the management and communication was abysmal. Costs spiralled as did completion dates. Along the way, we didn't know when work would resume leaving the 3 year old's bedroom (along with most of the flat) out of bounds to the family which then included a new born. Holidays had to be extended as did child care and alternative living arrangements as 5 days work took nearly a month to complete. Getting information from them was painful, if not farcical at times. Quotes for further work didn't add up and had old information on them leading to more delays. All in all, it was deeply regrettable that we chose to go ahead with R&S
We are pleased that you feel the standard of our work was proficient and competent. However, we are surprised to learn that you see Richardson & Starling as a ‘1 Star’ company. Upon exposure of the areas we were working on, further areas of rot where discovered. This involved more work which unfortunately increased the costs. The works were also required in a property which was adjacent to yours, this involved a further specification and co-ordination from us. We understand that there was some communication issues, but we did take this on board and discussed it with you at the time. We have since reviewed our procedures and dealt with these issues internally. Richardson & Starling has acknowledged that this could have been better and as a gesture of goodwill decreased the costs of your works. As a result we feel that the one star rating on the review is unfair.
Would strongly recommend against using this firm. Their communications were poor, the work shoddy and customer relations on the part of their ‘operatives’ non-existent. They damaged the skirting boards, broke a newly laid kitchen tile without admitting to having done so and left the place dirty. I am only glad I didn’t use them to do plaster work. I have no idea if they injected the damp course (which they would not guarantee) as they were employed to do.

Dear Mr Dorans, Thank you for sharing your experience. We appreciate your feedback as it allowed us to learn that we need to clarify our free survey statement and elaborate on circumstances when a price does apply. Our apologies if we caused inconvenience.
The Stirling branch has just finished doing a lot of work in my flat and it has been an absolute nightmare the worst 2 weeks of my life the contract manager and office manager have told me lies and been down right nasty to me Im slightly disabled and I’m on anti-depression medicine and the lies and hassle I’ve had from this branch has been nothing less than diabolical I’m now going to be left with a massive bill because of the lies and deceit I wonder if this is because I’m a council tenant and not a private client The Stirling branch has NO CUSTOMER SERVICE at all I really do wish the council had went with the wyse group
