I am currently attending Arbtech's ASSET course, which teaches some of the key skills of ecological consultancy and provides a structured route into worth with Arbtech. In a nutshell, this course has been life changing. I can only convey why by telling my story. Ecology is a notoriously difficult field to enter. Getting a job doesn't end with getting a degree. You must demonstrate your commitment to voluntary work by "outdoing" your peers on how much "extra curricular" work you've done. Achieving something that puts you ahead of your peers can seem an overwhelming task, particularly when you realise that none of it is a guarantee of a job. It quickly becomes naught but a pipe dream if like me you are from a financially disadvantaged background and must prioritise working over volunteering. This is a major failing of the industry and one I am grateful to Arbtech for recognising. Ever innovative, they have put themselves forward as the company to fix this problem and make ecology accessible to all. Struggling through poverty at the end of my Wildlife Conservation degree in 2012, I was one such person for whom all the endless hoop jumping was rendered completely unfeasible. I spent the next four years in self employment, trying to make a career as a pet portrait artist and domestic cleaner. I worked hard but things never really worked out. I was financially stressed and unhappy; forever dreaming of one day finding that opportunity to use my brain and all the ecological knowledge I'd worked so hard to gain over five years in further/higher education. All this was compounded by the realisation that I could no longer call myself a "new graduate" and my options were limited. I felt I had squandered my degree and was a failure. All in all, it was a gloomy time! But then, in 2017 I learned loans for postgraduate study had just been introduced and saw my chance to reset the clock and become a "new graduate" once again. Determined to get out of poverty, I felt I needed to broaden my horizons from the uncertain job prospects of ecology and conservation. For that reason I chose Environmental Management. My choices gave the MSc a strongly ecological focus, however, financial stability was my priority and I was aiming my sights at Environmental Management and auditing in the corporate world. That said, I was still looking at ecology jobs (just in case), and one day, with just two assignments left to do, I happened upon Arbtech's ASSET course. I instantly recognised this course as gold dust. Here, finally was a structured route into employment... a course providing training from a company to ensure everyone has the experience and knowledge they require of their staff. Not only that but they made it accessible to the financially disadvantaged by offsetting the course fee's against future work. I signed up immediately. I didn't think about it. Doors and pathways opened up before me as I read through the page and I knew I had to do this course. There is still a need to do volunteering via shadowing, BUT the difference is in that magic word "structured". This is not a case of grabbing whatever disparate opportunities you can in the hope that one day it might mean something to someone. Shadowing on the ASSET course has a purpose and a pathway. You shadow and build relationships with THEIR ecologists, who report back to senior staff on your developing capabilities, eventually signing you off as competent. The speed of this depends on how much time you can put into shadowing. On the down side, it means some will be gaining paid work quickly, whilst others will have to take a slow burn approach, depending on commitments/finances. However, the company culture is an honest, open and friendly one. They want to get you working as soon as possible and will do their best to keep your motivation levels up and remove any barriers to your progress. I think for me, the training I have received is only one part of the benefits of the ASSET course. The most important thing has been its impact on my mindset. It has taken away the uncertainty of the future. It has taken away the need to compromise. I am able to say to myself and to others "I am an ecologist in training and soon I will be a professional". This has increased my confidence, my sense of purpose and has sharpened my drive and eagerness to learn. On top of that, I've made new friends and a professional network. And we get free sandwiches. This site asked me "Tell us how Arbtec made you happy?" I would respond with "Arbtech gave me hope".

Life-changing! ASSET is a five-day course that aims to bridge the gap between university and the world of ecological consultancy. It consists of classroom sessions, where we were taught about legislation, dealing with clients, and report writing, as well as practical survey sessions on bats, reptiles and amphibians. I had been following Arbtech for some time before the course. They are an innovative company, with a strong focus on client satisfaction, but also offering some amazing perks to their employees (just this month they have given all employees a Fitbit, monthly contributions towards exercise classes, and encouragement to take naps(!) – see https://arbtech.co.uk/why-arbtech-wants-you-to-lift-weights-and-sleep-more/). It is my dream to work for them one day, and I jumped at the opportunity to attend ASSET 2019. Julia, the Business Manager, was in touch before and throughout the course. Any questions I had were answered fully, usually the same day. Her professionalism and openness are an “asset” to the company. Many of the Arbtech ecologists kindly gave their time to attend the training days to give talks, demonstrate practical skills, and answer our (many) questions. They were very knowledgeable and are clearly experts in their field. All in all, the Arbtech staff could not have been more helpful or professional, and I am very grateful for their dedication to training future ecologists. I count my lucky stars that I found this course when I did. It is no exaggeration to say it has been equally as helpful as my University degree in helping me kick-start my career in ecology. Since the course started, I have built a network of ecologists across the country; improved my theoretical and practical skills immeasurably; and shadowed Arbtech ecologists at bat surveys in my local area. Most importantly, I have landed my first job in ecology! A large part of my interview was spent discussing the course and the skills I have gained from it. I would not be where I am without Arbtech and I cannot thank them enough. If you are thinking about a career in ecological consultancy, ASSET is the ideal place to start. What are you waiting for?

I recently attended a bat handling and ID course with Arbtech and found it to be a fantastic learning experience. The course taught plenty of practical handling and identification techniques across a variety of UK species and I'm now much more confident in my identification skills and much less nervous about handing bats as a result. I would definitley reccomend this course to anyone wanting to work with bats in the field.

A fast professional service for a tree survey we needed for a planning application. The arboculturalist David Garrick was very helpful; he made contact by phone and email explaining everything and ensuring he had all the information he needed, and once we had received the completed report, he explained key points in a follow up phone call which was really helpful. Would very much recommend this company.

We've used or recommended Arbtech a number of times to our clients and they've never failed to "find a way" forwards, despite challenging issues with trees and bats and so on.

Natalie came out from Arbtech to perform my bat assessment, she was efficient and friendly, a real pleasure to deal with. Natalie took the time to explain everything to me. The report was returned to me less than 24 hrs after Natalie had been on site. Amazing service would thoroughly recommend.
