“Despite a busy workload, Matt went out of his way to accommodate additional work which was required to one of our sites. I was kept updated on progress and the finalised reports came through a day earlier than expected.”

“The 2019 summer ASSET course has provided a valuable platform for me to begin my career in ecological consultancy. It includes five training sessions spanning February-June which cover theory and practical training. There have also been opportunities to shadow a range of ecological surveys. The training sessions have been very engaging, exploiting the expertise of a variety of ARBTECH staff. So far, the classroom sessions have covered: • A workshop is QGIS for habitat mapping • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (including the desk research, surveying and report writing elements) • Bat surveys (Preliminary Roost Assessments and Bat Emergence/Re-Entry Surveys) • Developing good relationships with clients • Amphibian surveys (Habitat Suitability Assessments, amphibian ID, egg searches, torchlight surveying, bottle trapping, netting and DNA sampling) • Reptile surveys (reptile ID, refugia searches and visual searches) • Translocating herptiles using pitfall trapping, refugia and disruptive searches • European Protected Species Licensing During field sessions, we practised bottle trapping, egg searches and torchlight surveys for great crested newts (and other amphibians in the case of torchlight surveying) and saw a demonstration in the use of EDNA testing for great crested newts. We also practised identifying bats using a variety of bat detectors and detected common pipistrelles, noctules and serotines. As well as the training days, we have had the chance to shadow surveys such as Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, great crested newt Habitat Suitability Assessments and Bat Emergence/Re-entry Surveys. ARBTECH has ecologists in a great variety of locations, meaning that we can sign up to shadow surveys where it suits us. After enough shadowing, we can be paid to undertake certain types of survey, such as Bat Emergence Surveys. The course has really helped me to progress in my pursuit to become an ecological consultant. The skills and knowledge helped me in a successful application for an additional survey job over summer. I would greatly recommend this course to anyone aiming to begin a career in ecological consultancy.”

“The Arbtech ASSET training course has been fantastic! Every presentation has been packed full of information, ranging from surveying techniques through to the legislations that govern why such work is needed, and the practicals have offered a great insight into the work taken on by an ecological consultant. Different guest speakers each week have offered their own honest experiences and expertise, provinding us with real-world hints and tips. It's clear from everyone that they are not only passionate about what they do but they also love their job! Outside of the workshops, the encourgement we receive to pursue this as a lifelong career doesn't stop and they actively provide opportunities for us to shadow surveyors on all ranges of surveys. I'm sad that there is only one more workshop left, but I can't wait to be able to put into practice what I have learnt from the course! If you're considering the course, I can 100% recommend it; go for it!”
