K&N Typhoon Intake System Mazda MX5 Mk2/2.5 Reviews

Read MX5parts Reviews

The Typhoon™ Air Intake System is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube induction system designed to provide cooler, denser air to the engine for increased performance. It is a direct replacement for the restrictive OE air box and the constrictive factory air filter and inlet tract. Using the most advanced airflow management technology, K&N has optimized the flow characteristics of the Typhoon Air Intake System to complement it's high-flow Filtercharger®.Thanks to the massive number of these filter kits that we have sold in the last year we have managed to re-negotiate our price with K&N and are very pleased to pass on the saving to our customers.Fits all Mazda MX5 Mk2 and 2.5 models, 1998>

One word; WOW!Combined with my Poweflow 'zaust the 5 now sounds awesome, like a muscle car or something! Not much below 4000rpm or with normal driving but when you put the hammer down the sound really kicks in but it's a nice sound not a horrid noise. It also pulls better (as far as I can feel) as well.Great service as well...as usual from MX5Parts!

Once again, very quick delivery from MX5parts. Fitting took about 45 minutes to complete, following the excellent instructions that come with the kit. I did'nt bother disconnecting the battery as mentioned in the instructions, though I did disconnect the plug from the MAF box for ease of assembly and routing of the cables once completed. For anyone else reading this and who doesn't know, the filter comes pre-oiled, something I wasnt sure about when I bought it, though I should have guessed. The reccomended cleaning period is "when dirty or 1 year". I bought a K&N filter service kit at the same time I bought the Typhoon from MX5parts. This consists of a bottle of cleaner and a bottle of re-oiler and is enough for about 15 cycles, (loads in other words) The kit itself is very well made and the finish, (I have a red unit) is superb. Good quality parts are all included and the instructions as I said, are very detailed. It would be difficult to mess the installation up if you follow them properly.Well, the sound is lovely. There is a slight "hiss" at tickover now, though you dont notice too much inside the car. But under acceleration, and above 2000 rpm or so, there is a kind of rorty "snort". The throttle responce feels very slightly better too. I guess at some point, better exhaust would benefit, though that can wait. I have the standard unit fitted as far as I am aware. I suppose air in = air out? Anyway, very pleased, especially as it was reduced in price too.

Bought the filter yesterday lunchtime for my MK2 1.8s, it arrived this morning and it was fitted in half an hour. I use this car for autotesting and on a test run this afternoon I immediately noticed improved throttle response (not sure about the added horsepower) and the usual great noise that comes with K&Ns. I really wasn't sure about this kit and thought it would be a waste of money that could be spent on other parts however, I took the advice of all the reviews and bought it anyway and that is what I think you should do to ! It looks and sounds great, will increase the responsiveness of the car and put a huge smile on your face when you put your foot down going through a tunnel!

This was my 1st order from mx5 parts having only just bought my mx5 2 days earlier, the online ordering was as simple as it comes, the delivery....well the courier Knocked me out of bed at 8.00am in the bloody morning...! it was that quick..!OK.... the piece of kit..Its K&N so you know its gonna be quality. It fitted the car perfectly...I've bought kits for previous cars where things needed modifying but not with this baby.It looks awsome when fitted, the filter itself seems quite large for a 1.8 engine but it does not interfere with any other engine bay components. The kit sounds a little louder than stock on idle but get heavy with your right foot and this baby starts to sing...its very throaty @ 4000rpm..! My only concern is after driving about 50 miles I opened the bonnet and found the mandrel intake pipe quite hot.Not a K&N design fault but the apparent lack of direct cold air to the filter, maybe fitting a section of tubing like whats found on standard K&N induction kits will do the trick and keep the intake cool like its supposed to be.Overall Im very pleased, if your looking for induction, wait a little while longer, save a few more pounds and buy this kit rather than a standard induction kit.
