The vet was nice, as were the reception staff, but the prognosis was way off resulting in unnecessary medication. My elderly cat was in final stage of kidney failure, due to be put to sleep the next day. I took her to the out-of-hours vet as she had suddenly (over a few hours) lost mobility of her back legs. After explaining her history to the vet, the vet came to the conclusion that she had arthritis. Subscribed pain killer, something to improve her appetite and steroids. A 5 minute Google search told me that these symptoms are found in cats with final stage of kidney failure, which was confirmed when I visited my own vet the next day. The steroids were not needed and an unnecessary distressful injection (and cost). I understand that mistakes can happen, but I would expect a vet to recognise end stages of a very common terminal disease.

On Sunday 29th July my dog had a head trauma I’d phoned the vets emergency line which directly puts you on hold which I think is poor as it’s meant to be in an emergency. I’d explained that my dog was circling and showing signs of being very poorly. The vet nurse I spoke to told me to come in around 2 hours which I was in shock around as it was an emergency I then said I only lived 10 mind away so she said to come down in 45 mins and that I might have to call when I get there as the Bell was broken. When I arrived it was pouring down with rain and my dog was having a fit in my arms nobody was coming to the door I was then put on hold again and they finally answered after about 10 minuets, I told them I was outside and my dog was having a fit to which she said ‘alright alright I told you you’d have to phone il be there in a Minuit’ When she opened the door she said come in with a sigh as if I was being too overly conserned that my 2kg Chihuahua was fitting in my arms following a trauma to his head for the 3rd time. I found her totally rude and insensitive which was extremely upsetting and didn’t help given the situation. I found the vets that day and the other vets and vet nurses that cared for him over the next 48 hours very helpful and caring.

I have written a previous review about the vet’s rough behavoiur. However I am also concerned about the amount I was charged. On arrival I was given an estimate of between 250 and 550 as a max. When I paid I was charged 640. On checkout he said ‘you are insured, to which I replied no. He then said oh as if that was a surprise. I beleive that the charges were excessive and they believed I would pass the cost to an insurance company, but I was personally paying for the care of my dog and feel I have been over charged.

Hi Mrs Winter. I'm so sorry you feel this way. It's true that out of hours emergency and critical care for pets is expensive, just as it would be privately for human patients, and our clinical teams are on hand throughout the night and at weekends, whether we treat one pet or several. We have a handy article which gives a bit more clarity and context to our prices here: https://www.vets-now.com/2018/01/emergency-vet-costs-prices-fees/ - hopefully this will give you more of an explanation. Kind regards, Kirsty

The vet who check in my dog was very rough with him. He had just had major surgery and I explained he had arthritis and hip displaces. As an example of the thought treatment when taking his temp he just pulled him round by the tail causing his back legs to give way.

Torn ear - now looks awful, part missing and have been told by other vets that should have been debrided and stitched rather than just cleaned and glued. Glue quickly came unstuck resulting in split appearing again. Also quickly got infected as preventative antibiotics were not given.

Unfortunately, on Sunday evening my partner and I returned home to find our Russian dwarf hamster trapped beneath his sand bed (a ceramic bowl filled with cleaning sand). We both presumed the worst as he looked lifeless. He was completely flat with an eye bulging and his spine looked broken. His whole body was flattened along with his head. He had blood covering his chin and his jaw looked broken. We obviously rushed him to the vets 4 pets out of hours emergency on Moor Lane Preston. I was told to take a seat after my name was taken and there was extremely minimal conversation as to why we were there. An hour and a half passed and we still hadn’t been seen. I am a very understanding person and knew that out of hour vets do get busy however I felt as though we’d been pushed aside because we having a hamster seen rather than a dog or a cat. After waiting our hamster was taken to be weighed. A further 10 minutes passed which was the most stressful moment as I didn’t know what happening with my pet. We were told to go into the room in which I found the lid of the tub that my hamster was in half shut over him possibly causing more stress to him. I was then told that the vet hadn’t found the weights so I was confused as to what she had been doing in this time. After weighing him finally she began her examination. She had a clear fear of being bitten by my hamster which I found rather unprofessional. We told her what had happened and she told me that I had mistook pink on his lip as blood, I told her I had seen blood but that I might have been wrong. She got a wet piece of cotton and began swabbing his chest, there was blood. As she was wiping his chest my hamster began to squeal as he was in pain. The vets response to the was “do you want to do this as he’s more comfortable with you.” I feel as though she did this from fear of being bit but tried to act as though it was for the hamsters benefit. We were halfway through our appointment and the vet left for approximately 10-15 minutes because another emergency had come in. I felt very pushed aside which angered me as my pet was in distress and it was an on/off experience as he would settle then she would return to continue looking at him. Finally she returned with two needles for my dwarf hamster that were the left of him. She grabbed the hamster and proceeded to stab him in which he tried to escape from her grasp. She told us she would need her colleague to help and took our hamster away after we’d watched her physically hurt. She returned in 10 seconds saying that he’d had the needles. She said that was it and all we had to do was pay. We were given no medicine at all even though he could be prone to infection from a cut on his jaw and a cut above his eye. We had to pay £122, I am not bothered about the cost as I would pay anything for my pet. I am bothered about the treatment I received. In fact I am utterly disgusted. I returned to my own vets the next day in which they gave me Metacam and I was told I should have already been given this so I was even more angered that they hadn’t prescribed medicine to help my pet get better. I hope you take this review seriously as I am extremely disappointed and to be quite frank worried that these vets treat sick pets.

Vet very good. Cost extortionate. Over £160 just to have my an emergency appointment for my dog at my own vets. Surely costs can be reduced??? This didn't include medication. Animals will suffer because people have not got that amount of money in an emergency

All staff were friendly and welcoming however, upon seeing the vet I was in there for not even 5 minutes and asked a couple of questions then told to just keep an eye on my dog. I didn't feel satisfied with this service when I was charged £125. These questions could have been asked over the phone and I feel that should have happened instead i was told to come in asap and I had to quickly find a lift to and from the vet as I don't have a car and got charged for a five minute appointment of questions that did not need me to go in. I think the vet should review if it is necessary for an animal to come in to the out of hours practice before booking them in. I felt I wasted the vets time that could have go to another appointment that an animal did need urgently.

When attending with an extremely ill pet and it seems there more interested in payment and sending your pet home the next morning still extremely unwell and told to take him to your own vet to be checked is highly unprofessinal and gives me no trust in this hospital seemed to busy moving from pdsa building back to your own building to be bothered ,scanned my dog and obviously didnt notice he had a ruptured galbladder he was subsequently admitted into small animal hospital who have saved his life. I realise you were busy moving the morning he was discharged but when it's an extremely ill pet your dealing with that should be your priority not getting him out of the building and the female who called in the morning needs to have some training in dealing with the paying public was very adament we were told to pick him up at 8.30 when in fact we were told 9.30.

I don’t think they examined my puppy properly. I took her to my vets the next day & they said she had a thickened anal gland which the vet I saw didn’t even examine her bottom. £176 to be told she needed her bottom shaved. When it was an anal gland is a waste of money ! Won’t be recommending them.

Attended with my dog on Sunday who was very poorly had to attend pdsa for vets now as your own place was being renovated and you were working out of there, why do you say you are fully qualified and then say I had to take my dog to my own vet to be checked out and collect antibiotics for him, you kept him in overnight sent him home with a venflon in his leg and 2 heart biotabs still stuck to his 2 front paws, I do appreciate the help you gave but shocking the money you charge and to discharge him the way he was .

I’m giving one star for the telephone service and one for the vet and nurse that arrived to euthanise my dog. Still feeling very angry and upset at how long it took for the vet ambulance to get to Ashford to collect the vet and nurse. Two and a half hours we waited! My dog had a tumour in her tummy which had burst. We had to wait and watch her get worse and worse. By the time they arrived she was in a terrible state. I don’t believe the vet ambulance driver has priorities right. I’m positive he could have been much much quicker

You spent more time with my credit card than my pet. This is nothing short of emotional blackmail because we will pay anything when worried for our pets health, including the weeks rent.

When one of the first questions you are asked is how much money you have in the bank so they know what they can do for your pet is just down right awful. Asked to muzzle your pet because of the breed when hes lying dying on the floor, still more interested in our finances than actually helping our boy! Vet called back to say there was no more they could do, do they have permission to put our boy to sleep. Agreed that was the kindest thing to do but were told another vet would have to call back to confirm as we werent present to sign any paperwork which she did. There was a giggle from said vet, nervous laugh maybe but i didnt appreciate it at all. Received a phone call only 8 hours later for payment when the initial news youd lost your not even 2 year old pup hadnt even sunk in yet. Just feel that money was the more important factor and found them a quite unsympathetic
