“So far I have not found your books good . The first one dropped it after 80 pages. . The second one I am persevering slowly. This one I have just received is more appealing to me. A comment : when you give us the choice of 2 books each month, please could we give us the title of the books so that we can go into a deeper research and summary on the internet. Thank you.”

“I am an avid reader and received this subscription as a present. I have to say that the books are beautifully presented - I love the bookmarks and the postcards and the way that they are wrapped. But, I have been disappointed in the books themselves. I can honestly say that I have only really enjoyed one out of the five that I have read to date and that was the last one: I absolutely hated two of them. I will not be renewing my subscription and I would not recommend this to a friend. I think a good subscription needs to be linked to a specific reader's preferences, an A or B choice is not enough.”

“I was given the subscription as a present. I am disappointed in the lack of choice - just two books. And so far I haven't enjoyed any of them. It would be better if you had a more detailed profile of each reader and then you could offer more appropriate books. The way you wrap the books is superb.”

“Be warned that if you buy the subscription as a gift for someone, they will see how much it has cost when they do their initial signing-in. Also be aware that when posting comments on a book, your full name is shown. There should be an option of a user name for this, particularly as my name is rather unique. Now I know the price, I can say that it is not worth it. The books I have been offered so far have already been out for a while and can be bought at less than half the monthly subscription price.”

I’m sorry that you had to see the price of your gift when you redeemed your subscription - it’s something some of our other members have mentioned too and we’re working on fixing this so it won’t happen to others in the future, so thanks for giving us the opportunity to improve. If you drop us an email we can show you how to change your settings so your full name isn’t shown on your review in the members’ area. I want to take a moment to address your comment about the value of the subscription as this is something we actually feel really passionately about at Rare Birds. The monthly cost of the subscription works out to the retail price of the book itself and the postage; we avoid discounting the books so that authors are paid fairly for their work. We strongly believe writers should be paid for what they do, and refusing to discount means that every time someone buys a book through us they’re contributing positively to an ecosystem where writers earn enough to live and keep making the art we love. Even though you aren’t a fan of our business, I hope that at the very least it will make you feel good to know the books you received as part of your subscription are supporting some wonderful authors. “I was gifted a membership and was horrified that the cost of it was revealed in the setting up process. The donor would be rather upset that I now know their gift value. And now I know the cost per month, I can honestly say that it is not worth it - I’d far rather have a book token to the same value that I could use to get some of the newer books that are out. So far the book choices have not been inspiring, and I could have bought two of them in my local supermarket at £5 each. The books do arrive beautifully wrapped, along with a naff and unnecessary card bookmark.”

“Signing up with a gift card was not intuitive. I did get some help when I emailed. The first book arrived literally two days after I signed up (no choice). The second book came and was the opposite book to the one I’d ordered. I won’t be renewing after the three months I was bought as a gift.”
