About Flagship Wines:

Flagship Wines: ‘a well run independent whose prices can match those of the supermarkets and you get the friendly well-informed advice of boss Julia Jenkins thrown in for free’. Oz Clarke, 250 Best Wines 2010, 2009, 2008 and Wine Buying Guide 2007, 2006, 2005:

We are an exciting innovative independent wine merchant established in St Albans in 2004 by Julia Jenkins offering excellent wines and service with outstanding wine knowledge and enthusiasm. The company has a strong loyal local following that extends out into Hertfordshire and beyond.

Our superb wine range is a constantly evolving and changing list in which all the wines are carefully selected ensuring that the range of over 600 wines are distinctive and delicious, well made, and expressive of the region of origin. They also offer value for money. Many of the wines are from small wineries producing unusual wines that are not available in the High Street.

Ordered a case of 2019 wine (recommended in Decanter) from the website and payment was taken. I then did not hear anything for a week, even after i sent an email asking for delivery date. Finally received order but it was 2020 NOT 2019. I then emailed asking for tasting notes compared to the 2019. No response. Tried another email and still no response. Very poor service.

I made an order online and after a few days received an email saying order completed. When I went to collect my order from the shop (as I had selected when ordering), I was informed that the "order completed" email didn't actually mean the order was completed and ready to collect. Indeed, only 3 of the 7 bottles I had ordered were in stock. Furthermore, I was told that the prices I had paid for the remaining 4 bottles were likely to increase when Flagship sourced them from the wine merchants. In my experience, when you order an item online, and the money leaves your account, you expect the goods to be delivered for the price quoted / you have paid, not being sprung with an additional charge because the business hasn't actually got the items in stock, but have taken the money anyway. I would also suggest that the female owner/staff member could do with undertaking some training in professional communication with customers - I have never encountered such a rude and frankly patronising manner from anyone in a shop. It is not my fault that you don't have the items in stock, nor is it my fault that your system sent out in error, an automated email that the order was complete. I try to support smaller businesses rather than large chains / franchises, however, I certainly won't be using Flagship again - and had there been an option for 0 stars, then that is what they would have received.

I have to say that I'm more than a little angry with the way I was treated yesterday when I came to collect the bottle of Waxhouse 004 that I ordered and paid for at 3pm on Thursday afternoon. When I arrived yesterday afternoon to collect I was made to feel that this was my fault as I hadn't waited for a confirmation email that this was ready to collect. There was certainly no mention of this in the email confirming my order and with all due respect, if a bottle is showing as in stock and my payment is taken then it is certainly not unreasonable for me to expect to be able to turn up the following day to collect would you not agree? I was told that the last bottle you had had been "dropped off" to another customer at some point but you "hadn't got round to informing me". Quite frankly this is a disgrace and not the way to treat your customers. Either the order should not have been taken, or I should have been informed immediately that this was not available. As it stands I have taken away another bottle that I really didn't want. Can I suggest that you treat your customers with a little more value. I know the distributers of the Waxhouse offerings and as I understand it from them, you have not had this in stock for some time now which would lead me to believe that I was lied to yesterday. DISGRACEFUL!

Dear Nick I have read your review of your visit to Flagship Wines and I have tried a few times today to call to discuss the issue and offer my apologies and an explanation. I am sorry that you feel angry at the way you were treated. I have spoken to the person you saw here and they assure me that they did not intend to make you feel that it was your fault and have asked me to pass on their sincere apologies to you. I would like to explain the stock situation – on Thursday when you placed your order online, the last bottle we had in stock was being delivered to a customer in Borehamwood as you were advised. This can be verified if you wish. The stock on our website is not updated automatically and was due to be amended manually once the order was fulfilled, unfortunately, due to pressures on our time we had not yet done so by the time you visited the shop. Thus, it was an issue of timing that you came to collect prior to us advising you of the out of stock situation which we would normally do very quickly. I understand that you were offered a full refund at the time but you decided to take the alternative product offered. I’m sorry the situation arose. I would like to point out that the Whisky Group you refer to does not have access to our stock records and thus would not know if we had any remaining bottles in stock or not. It was thus an incorrect assumption on their part to advise you that we could not have stock. We are now out of stock of all the Waxhouse whisky releases. I would appreciate it if you would retract your comments on the review you have written here regarding the fact that you were likely to have been lied to as it was based on unverified information and is untrue. Best regards Julia
