About The Location
Skylark Cottage nestles in a peaceful spot yet only a few minutes' stroll from the centre of Ambleside. A holiday property in Ambleside provides an excellent starting point for a varied Lake District holiday. Easily accessible via the A591 on the northern shores of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a contemporary, characterful Lakeland village with a spectacular backdrop of Lake District fells.

The location is ideal for walking in the Lake District, with many renowned routes beginning in and around the village. But Ambleside is also a popular choice for a relaxed, slow-paced holiday. Contemporary shops, leisurely lake cruises, acclaimed Lake District restaurants and cosy traditional pubs make the village centre a delight at any time of year.

For evening entertainment, you'll find plenty to suit every taste. Try the renowned Force Mill restaurant, in a superbly converted sawmill, for a special evening out. Or, take your pick from the two quirky cinemas; Zeffirellis cinema includes a great pizzeria and live jazz bar. Fellinis has an excellent vegetarian restaurant and shows films in a relaxed studio cinema environment.

You'll also find a wide range of pubs, serving hearty food and real Lakeland ale - notable for its lake shore setting is the Wateredge Inn. Windermere Lake Cruises depart from Waterhead Pier, just outside Ambleside village centre. The elegant 'steamers' offer regular trips to Bowness and Lakeside - a great way to explore without driving. Evening cruises are also available, sometimes with buffet meals and live music.

You need to address the overgrown foliage in the driveway as it restricts parking. We parked on the street thanks to a helpful neighbour. Otherwise, everything was just excellent.

The location is excellent - a short walk to the main road and bus routes and a slightly longer walk into the town (but still not far at all). There are lovely views as the property is on a hill, but the hill might be difficult for people less mobile. The driveway accommodates a car - just. It’s very narrow and not easy to get yourself in/out of the car from the driveway, and getting the car itself out of the driveway is very difficult if someone is parked opposite, which they were when we were leaving. It wasn’t a major issue for us as we didn’t use the car after arriving until we were leaving again. Our car is a 4x4 so a smaller car might be more straightforward, but just something for people to be aware of. The house itself has a lovely garden with an elevated sun trap, which was perfect for enjoying with a cup of tea and a book first thing. It’s a very quiet area and you can hear nothing except for people walking past and chatting and the odd military plane, which was very exciting for my husband. The house has everything you would need for a week away (though you’ll need to buy/bring toilet roll and hand soap). It is a little tired and dated in places, but overall totally fine and comfortable. The washing machine and dishwasher are very handy and easy to use and the fact there are no extra costs and no issues with bringing a dog of any size (ours is a 10 stone giant) is brilliant. One point: the garden is not totally enclosed. Again it was no issue for us, just something for others to be aware of if your dog is inclined to wander. Lastly, the letting company is very good in our experience: we left our dog’s mat behind by accident and they have been really quick to respond to emails and sort out posting it back to us.

The house is ideally placed for Ambleside town centre and has good off street parking. The house is also spacious with modern amenities. We were however disappointed by the cleanliness and general wear and tear issues. Upon arrival we immediately noticed the small of damp which comes from the back of the house to the front. This is clearly a well known issue as a dehumidifier was set to run in the 2nd bedroom on a timer. The second bedroom was unusable in my opinion and I certainly wouldn’t want a child to sleep in there. The smell hit us every time we entered the house. The back garden does not seem that well maintained and moss and damp prevail. There is basic dirty garden furniture. Generally around the house there is peeling wallpaper, dirt and dust under radiators, in corners etc and cobwebs on the ceiling and even down the large mirror in the bathroom. There was a stain of tea or something similar splashed on the fire which we wiped up. There are very few (and old fashioned) plugs throughout the house with two taken out of the wall (bedroom and passage) and full of dust. There is only one spare plug in the bedroom. All internal windows and net curtains were dirty and there are broken blinds in the bedroom which another customer noted 2 years ago. I could see children’s hand marks on the living room window. The shelves in main bedroom wardrobe are very dusty and the mattress was dusty. The back of house is overlooked by neighbours so the blinds were always down in bathroom (the blinds were of course, dusty) The bathroom is very nice with a large bath and sink and heated flooring. The shower is OK although suffering from black water mould now in places. There was dust in the bathroom here and a crusted dried up air freshener. We could not turn off the extractor fan in the bathroom which kept us awake at times. The kitchen was good but again reliant on other guests cleaning up such as the messy knives and fork draw, an unusable and peeling drying pan and dirty sticky cupboard handles. There seemed to be enough items to cook with but we mainly ate out. The fridge is very noisy. We could not find full instructions for the oven - these can be downloaded for guest use. The WiFi is OK, not the best. There were no instructions provided on the wifi so had to hunt for the box to obtain the code by tracing power cables along the wall. We didn’t use the washing machine. Bring your own dishwasher tablets as they are not provided. There is a cloth, sponge, tea towel and tea/coffee/milk samples provided and plenty of loo roll. Generally with some adjustments this house could be much better - however noted that the back damp issue would be a large job to sort out. This house felt unloved and for us it wasn’t value for money.
