About The Location
Skylark Cottage nestles in a peaceful spot yet only a few minutes' stroll from the centre of Ambleside. A holiday property in Ambleside provides an excellent starting point for a varied Lake District holiday. Easily accessible via the A591 on the northern shores of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a contemporary, characterful Lakeland village with a spectacular backdrop of Lake District fells.

The location is ideal for walking in the Lake District, with many renowned routes beginning in and around the village. But Ambleside is also a popular choice for a relaxed, slow-paced holiday. Contemporary shops, leisurely lake cruises, acclaimed Lake District restaurants and cosy traditional pubs make the village centre a delight at any time of year.

For evening entertainment, you'll find plenty to suit every taste. Try the renowned Force Mill restaurant, in a superbly converted sawmill, for a special evening out. Or, take your pick from the two quirky cinemas; Zeffirellis cinema includes a great pizzeria and live jazz bar. Fellinis has an excellent vegetarian restaurant and shows films in a relaxed studio cinema environment.

You'll also find a wide range of pubs, serving hearty food and real Lakeland ale - notable for its lake shore setting is the Wateredge Inn. Windermere Lake Cruises depart from Waterhead Pier, just outside Ambleside village centre. The elegant 'steamers' offer regular trips to Bowness and Lakeside - a great way to explore without driving. Evening cruises are also available, sometimes with buffet meals and live music.

Booked this as a birthday away with my dog. I was disappointed with how clean the property was, skirting boards had dust that hadn’t been removed in a while. Plugs within the bedroom are outdated and dangerous one had part of a plug stuck in it so was unusable. Additionally the radiator in the kitchen needs bleeding as kept making bubbling sounds and really upset my dog. Also in the kitchen there was no washing up liquid or dishwasher tablets provided. The bathroom was freezing and I didn’t see anywhere in the property guide about the plugs on the wall are for under floor heating and the radiator. The fan over the shower was full of dust. The garden also lacks a gate on the pedestrian entrance so my dog was able to run onto the road, would have been nice to have warning for this before I booked it. Location was amazing and parking was ideal. If the issue were solved I would stay again. The welcome hamper was really lovely.

We were really looking forward to staying in Skylark Cottage but we were very disappointed. It had a damp musty smell every time we entered the property, the windowsills were black with damp, there was no blind in the kitchen (and it's overlooked by a house on a raised level) and I felt uncomfortable with no privacy, the radiator in the room was badly stained, the dining chairs had loose covers to disguise their poor condition but every time you sat down they slid off and the pan cupboard had a weird aroma and I had to wash the pans every time I used them. it was overall disappointing. On the good side it was warm and had loads of hot water and the location was great. If the above were rectified (and I did contact the letting agent to let them know) I would stay again but currently I do not recommend.

Thank you for your feedback about Skylark Cottage, Anne. I've raised your feedback with Skylark Cottage's owners, who have provided the following reply: "We are disappointed that the property didn’t meet your expectations. Thank you for your feedback, as we always want our guests to have an enjoyable vacation. The suggestion for blinds for the kitchen is good, and these have now been fitted. The dining chair covers are a stop-gap measure, and new chairs have been ordered. During the colder months, condensation forms on the windows which can cause marks on the frames. Our housekeeper is very conscientious and regularly cleans the windows and frames, but we will ask that she keeps an eye out for any marks. We thoroughly inspected the kitchen cupboard and area, but neither our housekeeper nor we could detect any unusual smells. However, we will keep a watch brief on it. Thank you for your feedback. We are grateful to know of any issues so we don't have future problems and can maintain high standards. We hope you have an opportunity to revisit us soon."

We stayed here for 5 nights for our honeymoon, for the two of us and our Labrador. It was ideal for us and just the right size, drive way is a little snug (we have a Nissan qashqai) but greatful for the off-road parking. Garden isn’t enclosed but with a minor change it could be which would make it ideal for those with dogs, no grass in the garden but nice space out there. Only minor thing for us was that there isn’t any where to hang towels to dry, so something to hang towels on in the bathroom would be ideal or even hooks on the back of the door. The cottage did look tired in places and a few adaptions would make it look lovely again, like broken blind cord in the bedroom, no blind in the kitchen, and the doors could do with being changed but these are minor things and wouldn’t stop us coming back. As above it was ideal for the two of us and the dog, plenty of space and has everything we needed, the kitchen being well equipped with Washing machine and wifi. A perfect location being a short walk into the centre of Ambleside. We received a lovely bottle of fizz on arrival to help us celebrate our honeymoon which was a lovely surprise! We felt at home here and comfortable, it’s difficult to find a small cottage for 2 with a garden in a good location so we were pleased that we spotted this one and would certainly look at staying here again. It was our first holiday in over 4 years and we loved being back in the Lakes, we really didn’t want to come home, and already looking to book to come back. Overall would really recommend this cottage!

Well set up for using as a base for exploring the outdoors- handy porch area for doffing wet kit, comfy beds and sofa, reasonably well stocked kitchen and a large teapot is always a bonus (though some more mugs would be handy- there were only 5 including a broken one). Driveway is big enough for a large vehicle, access tight but doable. Described as baby and toddler friendly- it does have a good highchair, bath and decent washing machine. However, we were glad we brought our own travel cot as the one in the accommodation smelled like it had been used near an open fire before and would not have been happy to use it for the baby. There is also a fireplace with artificial coals which are of course highly attractive to any inquisitive baby so a fire guard would be a big bonus.

Clean, modern comfortable house with a big garage too. Kitchen is well kitted out and can almost manage a dinner for 8 (couple of spoons needed). Outside seating for 4 too. Big secure garage for toys too.
