The Property

Styhead Tarn is a fully-equipped 3-bedroom Lodge situated on a private holiday park in the heart of Lake District National Park with communal leisure facilities and surrounded by natural woodland. From the Park is a superb choice of walking paths including routes to Skelwith Bridge and the Talbot Pub, Elterwater and the Britannia Inn, Grasmere, Ambleside and Chaple Stile.

The elevated position of the holiday lodge means that you have a quiet private space, not overlooked by any of the other holiday-makers. The large south-facing outdoor area with wooden furniture benefits from views over the estate and onto Black Fell and Park Fell. The communal leisure complex, use of which is included in the hire, offers an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and a table-tennis table which makes it perfect for families looking for hot tub holidays in the Lake District.

Very comfortable and in very beautiful surroundings, the highlight was seeing red squirrels every morning also the variety of woodland birds. Well positioned so could easily park the car for the week and just walk or use a bus. Nice swimming pool. Only shortcoming was no Internet in the lodge only in the pool house (but this could actually be a blessing!)

We enjoyed our stay but feel the lodge is not big enough for 5 persons. It definitely needs an update and Wi-Fi fitting. The TV is very old too and kept freezing & the screen goes blank for seconds. The decking needs repairing it is a trip hazard has my grandson found out twice bruising & bashing his shins both times. And the cleaning needs to be more thorough as the floors were grubby and the sofa as food in between the cushion seams. Also the lodge was not secure for dogs as open no gates to keep them in. We stayed at Neaum crag before in Wastwater which was immaculate and better all round. The pool needs repairs around the edge and the window sill is loose which is dangerous. Just all dated needs attention

The lodge itself is a nice lodge and has a lovley outside area, the lodge needs to be a bit better sign posted as was very hard to find as it is hidden away, the cleanliness was what let it down.

Thank you for your review Aidan. I'm sorry if the cleanliness wasn't up to the usual high standard. Had you let us know at the time, we could have arranged for the cleaner to return. I will let the owner know so they can discuss this with the cleaner. In terms of signposting - unfortunately, the park management does not allow lodge owners to place directional signposts so this just wouldn't be possible. As you will know, we also included a Google Maps link in the pre-arrival information that we sent to you. The pin location is precise to the lodge, and many guests have used it to find the lodge, without any reported issues. I will however report your feedback to the owner. Kind regards, Adam

A decent lodge in a fantastic location for local walks and attractions but it smells! It smelt musty for the duration of the week, it didn't matter how long we kept the windows open for the smell just wouldn't go. The bathroom also stunk for the first 3 days, it is on a septic tank, it was disgusting. As for the mattresses on the bunk beds and certainly one of the single beds they need replacing. One of the bunk bed mattresses was completely sunken in the middle and had a browny red stain on the back, it was of very poor quality and rather grim to be honest. The lodge itself is very gloomy due to it being under complete tree cover, for the exorbitant summer price we had to pay I would definitely not recommend staying here. The lodge itself was well equipped and clean and like I say local walks were good and it was very accessible to Ambleside, Grasmere and Windermere for example but the smell and state of the mattresses would prevent me from ever coming back. Also don't come here for the pool, if even another person is in there it's too small and cosy to get in and share and the area with the table tennis table in is 100 degrees.

We had a fantastic time at Styhead Tarn Lodge. The accommodation was immaculate, clean, fresh and welcoming. The lodge had everything we needed including a well equipped kitchen, lovely comfy beds and spacious living area the outdoor area was amazing especially when the sun shone. We’ve been staying at Neaum Crag for over ten years in numerous cabins on the estate and this one by far exceeds all others. We are already looking to book again next year. Thank you
