“Great service as always from The PiHut. Item arrived quickly and well packed. I struggled to find a solution to the fact when fitting the HAT (using the GPIO pins) it renders them un-usable afterwards. After much searching, I found that you could use an extended pin set to increase the length of the pins that push through, giving you a useable set of pin headers again. It would be extremely useful for other 'Newbies' like myself, if this was clearer on the HAT description with perhaps a link to the extended pins. I had to resort to making my own little 'how to' video for the benefit of others.
Also, it does not fit the Pi5 when the cooling solution (fan & heatsink) is fitted. I used an alternative set of spacers a little bit taller than the ones supplied with the HAT, but they are still a little on the short side, causing the HAT board to flex slightly over the fan.
If I extend it any further, I won't have enough pin length exposed to be able to securely fit GPIO wires.
If there's a better solution, then I'm all ears.
None-the-less, the Sense HAT worked fine when connected in my rather make-shift fashion, 'straight from the box' and I've already written my first program using it to display a random page number.”
“i love all things pi but god forgive they ever work without deep dives into web forums
(but that's half the fun)
the motion detectors wouldn't work on a brand new pi 4 without a firmware upgrade that is hard to find
the position of the temperature sensor means it mostly reads the temp of the board it is on
the joystick is a keyboard interupt so pressing it when testing a program has inresting side effects of moving the cursor or adding newlines
the hat blocks access to all the pins - limiting what you can add to it
that said i've had fun playing with it to built an accleration recorder for my car”
“Absolute waste of money. The temperature readings are highly inaccurate when used with a pi 400 and even worse when used with a pi 3 where it is affected by heat from the CPU.
I do not understand why anyone would design a piece of equipment for use with pi 3 that would be so affected and then market it as a supposedly useful item.
Absolute rubbish.”
“Excellent HAT but all too rarely used in UK schools? Shame because it’s a world of STEM for the price. Same old story, if it’s not in the curriculum then it doesn’t exist.”
“Had good fun with the Sense Hat, programming it with Python. Not convinced it's calibrated correctly & the header / standoffs are appropriate when the Active Cooler is fitted”
