The 8GB rasberry Pi is an impressive product. Some people have suggest that 8GB of RAM is more than most people need - and in many case that is correct when it is being used as program memory. But for a long time I have wanted a USB ram drive for my Raspberry Pi servers because flash is unsuitable for data that is constantly being updated (especially if it is transient and does not need to be preserved between boots), and I want my rotating media to be able to spin down as much as possible to reduce wear and power consumption. My preferred solution was a large RAM disk with required information copied to flash or rotating media on shutdown, but earlier Pi's did not have enough RAM to devote a few GB for a filesystem. I feel that the 8GB Pi 4 solves this, and I can now retire my IOMEGA ram drives.
On the down side, the Pi4 does run hotter, and consumes more power. And to run the 8GB Pi4 you do need the latest Raspberry OS or it wont boot. So there are still situations where it makes sense to use the older models.”
